I've seen four Godard films of the early sixties and would rate my preference in descending order as:
Breathless
Contempt
Vivre Sa Vie
Pierrot le Fou

I'd recommend introducing yourself to Godard the same way he announced himself to the film world as a first time director, with Breathless. And you shouldn't go wrong with the new Criterion Blu. The Contempt BD isn't Criterion (I don't think - I saw it a few months ago, and I believe it was Studio Canal), but it's an interesting film. I don't think it consistently succeeds, but certainly parts of it I found fascinating.

I think it's fascinating and the blu is extremely well done technically. I can understand those who dislike it, because it's very different than the norm, but I think it's a fun film. Vivre Sa Vie is much different but still incredible. I wish Criterion would pick up Le Petit Soldat, which I love as well.

Le Petit Soldat is one of my favs too, and you'll be happy to know Rialto Pictures just got this film recently (along with LES CARABINIERS), so it's prob 100% safe to say, Criterion WILL release this in a year or 2, whenever Rialto is finished with a new transfer.

There is already a dvd out though of it, if you don't have it.

So out of "New" to Criterion Godard releases, the next 3 will prob be WEEKEND, LE PETIT SOLDAT, and LES CARABINIERS.

What about "Band of Outsiders", do you think it will get a release soon?

Hey man, have you gotten your copy of "Another Version of the Truth" BD from http://thisoneisonus.org/? It is amazing!

As a fan, I'm sure you've heard of it, but if there is a slight chance that you have not, there is a lot of info about the project on that site and the BD is quite amazing!

There is also another site, http://atinylittledot.com/ where they are creating a BD set of the last show NIN has ever played during their Wave Goodbye tour.

I have no clue what is in Criterion's RE-Release plans. I just know the New to Criterion things, which is the 3 I listed.

But being Godard, you would think Band of Outsiders and Masculin féminin would be safe bets for blu re-releases, and soon too (maybe one in 2011) if they can't get the 3 new ones out by then.

The singing number is probably my favorite part in Pierrot le Fou. Worth it just for that.

Sometimes I'll pop in the disc before watching it and let the BR title music play repeatedly while I make some food

What are peoples thoughts on here about The Human Condition? I passed this up on the last sale and if there is another one in November I';m thinking about getting it. Thing is Ill have no time to pre-watch it and decide if I like it until december sometime. I have not even watched my Netflix releases in about a month, 3 movies have just been sitting there, its just sad

This could be correct -- I watched Pierrot first and hated it (seemed like a mix of a romantic "Into the Wild" with Monty Python thrown in) --then watched Vivre and didn't like that either (why am I to feel sympathetic for this protagonist again? ). Perhaps by being broken in by Pierrot, I'm forever Godard-tainted?

Some people may share their thoughts on the film, but I just wanna double-check to make sure you're posting this in the correct thread. I only say that because you mention the possible upcoming November sale, which I assume you mean the Barnes & Noble sale, correct? If that's the case, it would not be a part of the sale because "The Human Centipede" is not distributed by the Criterion Collection in any part of the world. The region A release is handled by IFC Films and the region B release is handled by Bounty Films with help from Eureka! Entertainment.

There are separate threads for both the region A release and the region B release over in the European section.

Hmm. Now you've got me thinking. I don't even remember what my intro to Godard was, but I don't want to taint anyone

What do people think would be the best intro to Godard? "Breathless" maybe?

Pierrot le Fou was my first Godard, and I enjoyed it enough to look for some of his other films. I liked how unpredictable it was and the way it played around with cinema conventions. The next one I watched was A Woman is a Woman, which I thought was entertaining (be sure to grab it if you like Anna Karina). So far, the one with the least replay value for me is Breathless.

For me, "Breathless" isn't a good start.

I would go with either "Vivre sa vie," "Band of Outsiders," or "Masculin féminin."

I can see that. Can I shamefully admit I hacen't seen Masculin féminin myself? (Drat. I just checked and it's not on Netflix streaming).

Great, thanks for the info. I think it's Le Petit Soldat is a great film and a deviation from other Godard works, in its political conveyances and mood. The photographing scene, however, seems to fit in well with his other works.

Agree with the poster who said his favorite part of Pierrot was the singing sequence. Love that scene.

The Human Centipede was interesting, if you like people sewn together mouth to anus. Never saw The Human Condition.
