Band of Outsiders. Fun, simple story as Breathless, and you get Anna Karina. Was my first Godard years ago, and look how I turned out with his films.

I agree with you CG. Band is probably the easiest Godard you will see. Many of the other films from him require some background knowledge to his style and though process. IMO, Band is a vintage action movie, with a small amount of Godard's unique style in it. A good start to get a taste....

It helps to fall in love with Karina before falling in love with Godard's films.

My wife has already agreed to "Anna Karina" for the name if we have another daughter......... no plans for more little Betas right now though....... It helps that her name falls into the "acceptable" range for my wife's ethnic requirements

A Woman is A Woman is also easy to get into and just so happens to be the only Godard I think is anything more than meh. If you want to fall in love with Anna Karina, she never looks cuter than she does in that film.

Actually that's exactly the kind of film that has universal appeal these days... Which makes me glad we have Criterion releasing good films to the market.

If that's the case, it would not be a part of the sale because "The Human Centipede" is not distributed by the Criterion Collection in any part of the world. The region A release is handled by IFC Films and the region B release is handled by Bounty Films with help from Eureka! Entertainment.

There are separate threads for both the region A release and the region B release over in the European section.

So, in anticipation of Antichrist, what genre would this type of movie fit into? I've heard some negatives, positives, and read some blurbs about it here and there, but it seems a little hard to classify...for me at least. I have never seen it, but, like House, am looking forward to it immensely!

I'd say horror/suspense.

It will only frustrate anyone looking for a regular horror film, though. You might call it "arthouse horror". It's the kind of film that asks the viewer to interpret lots of symbolism instead of offering a clear explanation. I would advise renting first if possible because it's a very polarizing film. To some, it's great, but to others, it's pretentious crap. Either way, it's a very good looking film. Even if you don't like it, you're not likely to forget having seen it.

True, but I was working on the assumption that it was a given Criterion films were "non-traditional." Especially so with their horror/suspense films.

It is a real subtle psychological horror, it's more like a Bergman movie, I didn't like it when I first saw it but it quickly grew in my mind, to be one of last year's great movies, it is hard to say why. Also the gore, is somehow glorious and poetic

Antichrist was, by far, one of my favorite movies released last year. I saw this movie when it was shown at the NYFF last october and have been eagerly anticipating a North American blu release ever since. Not only does it have the most beautiful cinematography I can recall ever seeing in a movie but the performences were also incredible (Particularly Charlotte Gainsbourg).

That being said, It's definitely not for everyone. It's the epitome of a Love-it-or-hate-it type of movie.
[Show spoiler]If you can look past the graphic nature of the movie, I think you'll find a pretty devistating and effective movie on loss and grief.
I dont think that's really a spoiler but you can never be too safe here.... Don't want to get in trouble

Thanks everyone...sounds like I will probably enjoy it based on what everyone said. I enjoy films such as these and since I really couldn't imagine what kind of treat I'd be in for, I'm looking forward to it even more.

Yes, I agree that it is one of the more wonderful film experiences from last year. Just be weary of the explicit sexual scenes if you're planning on watching it with anyone else that may be upset by that kind of thing.
