I think some of those are from around 2008, so I don't know if that's any indication that the titles are coming soon, or on Blu-ray. I seem to remember reading that BFI has wanted to release that Dracula (1958) restoration for a while but is being held up.

Awesome to know that they did The Great White Silence for the BFI. That is one of my most anticipated BFI BDs for 2011, not least because it will contain the oldest footage yet mastered to Blu-ray (dated around 1910-1911).

Saying something is "quality" is completely subjective. For the record, I think Paris, Texas is great. lDlisturb3d thinks it is mostly trash. Listing the amount of awards its won or citing an "expert" is going to do nothing to change his opinion. It is not a "quality" film for him, and the fact that it won a Palm D'Or won't change that, sorry. Listening to "experts" and taking their word for what is good and what isn't with something as subjective as film is flat out stupid and lazy.
Actually, listening to experts in their field is a great way to formulate your opinion, as the facts are spelled out for you. Do you listen to your doctors 'opinion'? He is an expert in his field, or is his 'opinion' subjective too? Reviewers are no different than any other expert. They have film based facts to back up their opinion, just like a doctor has facts to back up his opinion. In the end, we all make our own choices. Listening to someone that knows what they are talking about is usually the intelligent thing to do before formulating your own opinion. We do it when we vote, why not before we make our 'review' on a film. I am saying that we should have all the facts before we make a judgment, it's the smart thing to do.

Now, now. Are we really comparing reviewers to doctors? Not only do doctors go through YEARS of excruciating medical school, but they actually have a scientific standard on which to base their "opinions". Critics, on the other hand, may or may not have years of schooling, and definitely don't have a scientific standard upon which to lean on. Talking about the arts (be it movie, book, music, painting, etc) is fraught with nuance and personal opinion.

I agree. A lot of times I get great insight and understanding on a certain film by reading reviews or essays from notable film critics or gurus, even if I don't agree with their final assessment..

It's also usually based on vast exposure to other films that influenced the one they are reviewing. Reviews certainly aren't that comparable to medical diagnosis' but I'd say many reviewers provide insight that can play a large factor in how the viewer interprets and thus enjoys a particular film.

Haha, I'll second that. Man, that freaking General Mireau was a bugger.

What a bad start to my day.
So this B&N sale has been going on for a week now, which is great, except I've been all caught up with current blu releases for a while now. So as everyone gets to enjoy awesome savings, I've been patiently waiting for today so I can take advantage of the good deal on Antichrist.
I wake up extra early to get to B&N at 9 when they open. I walk around, and they don't have it!!! The guy at the counter told me they have one copy in stock, but it's on hold for somebody. However, they have 4 dvd copies of it.
Stupid Barnes N Noble. Why couldn't they stock 2 and 2? Or 4 and 4? But 4 to 1? Really? FRUSTRATED.

Why not compare?? Quality reviewers, which are the ones that typically are the ones that vote for the awards, are well trained in the arts and have went to school for many years also studying the histories of their discipline. Ebert didn't walk into Northwestern and say he knows a lot about film. Medical doctors are also 'practicing' medicine. They are 2 different extremes, but built off some sort of foundation as their basis of opinion.

The difference is that when you ask a doctor for their opinion on something if you're sick, if you go to different doctors, they should give you the same diagnosis unless of course the doctor is incompetent. On the other hand with movie critics, there is no real standard even if each of these so called critics went through years of studying film. One film might be considered a classic by a renowned critic while another critic of the same caliber will say that it's not very good.

Don't get me wrong--I love criticism in all facets. But comparing criticism to doctors seems ludicrous for one simple reason: while doctors can be wrong occasionally, generally we need to listen to them to lead healthy, productive lives. On the other hand, watching a non-critic approved movie isn't going to result in anything horrible except maybe some wasted time. In fact, there can be movies which don't have a critical backing which CAN be enjoyable and meaningful to individual viewers. Likewise, individual viewers can watch a critic-approved movie and not like it or get anything from it. The mini-review which sparked this whole debate being a decent example.

That is the beauty of criticism, in my eyes.

I feel your pain...nothing like getting your hopes up on "release day", just to hit the store and find that the film you had been anxiously waiting for either never came in (it happens) or they are "out of stock".

The way around this, is to call the store as far in advance of the release date as you can. Don't ask them to "hold" a copy for you, rather, have them "order" a copy for you. This not only insures that you get a copy, but almost guarantees that you get it on the release date.

You can call your local store now and order a copy of Antichrist. They should have it "in-store" either by the weekend and/or early next week.

Good luck...let us know how you make out.

I have mine on reserve at my store... I called them the day the sale started and reserved that title and Modern Times, Night of the Hunter for next week. I got my reserve e-mail overnite saying my copy was on hold at the store ready for pick up. I have a feeling that is what the person did that has your stores copy held.

I did have him place an order for me before I left. I would have just ordered it online, but I want to try to use the $5 off coupon.

Heck, I might drive to another town because I'm a little kid and very impatient.

Strictly from this morning's incident, I now look at you as the enemy.

Other than discussing "what I bought at the sale today", the usual discussions of DVD titles that would be great on blu, arguments over us amateur reviewers, and my sex change operation...nothing much to report!

Default Barnes and Noble 20% Online Code

I just got this in my email today. The 20% discount is good through 11/16, but is ONLINE only (no store coup). This would cover TNOTH, Modern Times, Sherlock Jr. and Kino's "Metropolis" (if that date is still 11/16). I'm guessing that this is for MEMBERS ONLY. Well...read the terms and conditions (the second URL). I hope this isn't just for recipients of that email. Let me know if this works. Please see below:
