Weird? I guess not.

Here's the thing, though... there is no such thing as a "Criterion movie." There are only movies distributed by The Criterion Collection. Criterion is not a studio that produces movies like WB, Paramount, Universal, etc.

Have you ever seen any of the following movies?
  • King Kong (1933)
  • The Silence of the Lambs
  • Robocop
  • The Rock
  • Armageddon
  • It's A Wonderful Life
  • The Wizard of Oz
  • Ghostbusters
  • Boyz n the Hood
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Seven
  • The Princess Bride
If you answered 'yes' to any of them, then you, good sir, have seen a "Criterion movie." All of those movies, at one time or another and on some type of format, have been released by Criterion. Obviously, I went through Criterion's past and picked out some of the more mainstream major studio releases, but back in the days of laserdiscs Criterion was the company releasing these films because the major studios weren't.

Go to Criterion's site (specifically the blu-ray page) and look through the five pages of titles that are currently, or will be, available. If any of them seem like something you'd like then I say to take a chance. The worst part of your interest, though, is that you just missed out on the latest Barnes & Noble 50%-off sale on Criterion movies.

I hope this has been informative.

Is there any rumblings of a Dazed and Confused Blu-ray release? Quite tempted by Amazon's off $9.99 for the DVD, but really don't want to double dip down the line.

It was an HD DVD release, so it's likely to come to Blu-ray, but not via Criterion..... with that said, it's worth it just for the extras....

Amazon has it listed as a lightning deal for Sunday, so although it's $9.99 now, it could be $5 or so Sunday, so I'd wait, and be prepared to click "Buy" as fast as possible......

I just hope they don't put it off for a while since they have released so many Kurosawa films on Blu already :/
What's upsetting is that the restored Japanese BD of Rashomon has been out almost two years now. That was really where they should have started with Kurosawa in my opinion, if only for the restoration, although Kagemusha is probably the one that sells best next to Seven Samurai.

I really hope the BD delay is either contractual (and I doubt it would be for this long) or a sign that Criterion is gathering new materials for the BD release.

I agree, we already have 4 samurai Kurosawa movies on BD. If they decide to do anymore Kurosawa any time soon, I'd personally like to see High and Low, Ikiru, or Stray Dog.

Here's what I do every year about this time. Since the super-deals don't qualify for shipping, I throw in another Criterion title, but one that won't come out for a few weeks; like Cronos. Then I select "ship in as few shipments as possible"

I can wait a few weeks for D&C and if the price lowers before Cronos ships, I'll get the lower price.

Guilty admission: I also added season one of T.J. Hooker to that order.

I can get Prime. But I actually choose to add the title to delay the shipping. I included the $25 tip for those who don't have Prime.

Prime or not. I always add delay titles this time of year in case deals improve.

It seems a lot of people have amazon prime, yet not a barnes n noble membership.

I'm completely opposite, $25/year vs $79/year.
That just seems a little steep to me. I maybe order through amazon 5 times in a year, and I always buy more than $25 worth of stuff, so Prime just doesn't seem like it would pay itself off.

If you don't order a lot then sure. But, considering Amazon's prices are lower and the reliability of their 2 day shipping, i'd say it's much better than B&N. I think even Borders is better than B&N, with their monthly coupons that are great to use on Kino and Criterion titles plus their Borders Bucks rewards, which allowed me to grab Sherlock Jr. for $9.36.

I guess I'm just biased to B&N because since I was about 17 that's been the local hang out spot after school and such. I visit the store about 4 times a week, and I buy a lot more than just Criterion movies there. Not to mention all the cute girls there...

I won The Man Who Fell to Earth last night on ebay for $48.00, thought I was going to pay more. Lowest Buy Now price is $69.99, high is $90.00.

Ah so now the real reason comes out. You should definitely check out Borders, I guess it's more or less the same crowd as B&N. I only go to B&N during the Criterion sales but all year round, my go to store is Borders, which allows me to get the same B&N sale price with their coupon.

I had bad experiences with Borders. I tried using some 33% off a dvd coupon, and I wasn't allowed to use it while buying Science Is Fiction because it had 3 discs and therefore was considered a "box set" which wasn't included in the coupon. That was so frustrating!

I've never been a Borders fan. Probably because the local Borders doesn't have a music or movie section to speak of (just a little rack near the front of the store). To get to a Borders with any kind of music/movie selection I'd have to go drive a half hour down the highway. Not that the half-hour is a make-or-break trek--but when I have a B&N just a few minutes away with a really good music/movie selection, it just doesn't make sense to go.

I guess I'm just lucky. The Borders near me has a pretty good selection and is up to date with new releases from Criterion and sometimes Kino. It's closer than B&N too so I guess that's also a big reason. I'm just hoping they don't close down because the bigger store they had near me already did.

What's up with Criterionforum falling behind on the packaging photos.
Are they too busy chasing turkeys?

Holy crap. I got this 2 months ago for $23 shipped.

In actual catching up on Criterion news, I watched Breathless and kinda liked it, and watched The Wages of Fear and LOVED IT. So tense throughout. Great film.

Have yet to watch either of those. I managed to watch these 3 over the weekend; Monsoon Wedding, Night of the Hunter, and The Magician.

Loved all 3! As soon as I finish editing today, I am going to work on reviews for these ASAP!

Why don't you ask cdnchris over there? He's the one that runs the show for that kind of stuff.

I know for "Modern Times" and "The Night of the Hunter" he mentioned that there was a delay in them being sent out, so he wasn't able to have the photos up before the release date.

The only thing that's not available to be seen right now is the "Cronos" packaging, which I'm 99.9% sure is in a standard plastic case from Criterion. He has "Videodrome" up, and the "BBS Story" packaging has been up on DVDBeaver's site for quite a while... plus, it's being released today.
