Napoleon Dynamite does not belong in the same sentence as Juno. One is funny, Napoleon Dynamite. The other terrible, Juno.

Except that Borders selection varies from store to store. I have (2) stores under 45 minutes from where I live and both their selections are CRAP!

When did I say Godard was a Christian story to put fear in people's heads?

Hey, what's the difference between I don't care for Wes Anderon films and I don't care for Godard? weird. But I don't care. You popular snatchers can have Godard and throw him in the trash. But you leave me Dennis Hopper damn it!

I like some of Godard's films, and don't care for others, and I like some Anderson's films, and don't care for others...... somehow you've turned that into "I hate Godard"

Also, your skills at deflection are commendable.......

EDIT:

Is it o.k. if I still enjoy Dennis Hopper in private? I'll lock my doors, and swear I won't tell people.....

What gets under my skin, and why I've gone to the trouble to ignore exactly one poster on this whole site is the notion of being told over and over why other people like things.

I see only one voice in this thread trying so hard to be "hip".

Like it or not, Kurosawa's films are a lot more straightforward and easier to digest than Godard's - which is why they (and especially Seven Samurai) are often the easiest way for many younger viewers to transition to "foreign cinema".

On a slightly different note, I'd rather see Criterion expand in a different direction when it comes to American cinema - the BBS Story being the direction I like - rather than have them further expand their catalog with Mr. Anderson's films. There are terrific classic and cult American films from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, that are easier to see outside of America than they are here. Additionally, there is a total lack of knowledge amongst younger viewers as to the history and depth of American cinema, which is why I believe that Criterion could be a very good 'teacher'

But if you want robot central, then I better not see another bad opinion about ANYTHING, or they should be banned. I see posts that hate on more people than Wes Anderson, well more bashing on Criterion than Anderson, being they are the one releasing them. So what would you want, anti-opinion lovefest ("Oh I'm new here, I like what your having please. What's more popular Seven Samurai or Seventh Seal? The winner is the one I'm buying!"), or free opinion ("Godard films are so boring!" "Wes Anderson sucks!")?
It's not irony! Just defending what you enjoy, and I enjoy Anderson films and don't understand the hate. That's all! You're misinterpreting my defense.

7:03 EST, and no shipping info on my BBS set...... I don't mind if it doesn't ship out today, and even a delay I can deal with..... but a cancellation will end up costing me at least $10 extra, and honestly, it'll probably cost me $20 extra because I'd just order it from Amazon because I'd know exactly when I'll get it that way

i happen to like the maturing of Wes Anderson =). he and i understand one another as one OCD person to another OCD person

i think his best is fantastic mr. fox because how he can OCD control every detail there. but i am glad he's back to live action as well. just got darjeeling, his filmography is very good =). i just luv that he luvs the planning of things vs. the actual execution of the plan as i also do.

OCD isn't something to be proud of.

Here we go with another sweeping generalisation from the mind of CG... Actually, there are a number of assumptions embedded in that statement... that Wes Anderson films are crap, that he is a 'hip' director, that hip teens will buy his movies because they are hip... none of which there is any objective evidence for. I haven't even seen Anderson's films but they certainly don't seem like teen fodder for the most part.

Look, I'm in agreement with ccfixx about preferring to see more non-mainstream Americam cinema in the collection from the 60s and 70s. The BBS set is on my list for sure. But surely there's room for Anderson too...

On a related but somewhat tangential note, I had a dream last night in which I had bought a bluray disc of Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr Fox" for my 9 year old daughter. But it was a Criterion bluray, in the clear case! I had the disc in my hands and had opened it, and I was in a shopping mall or something similar and had to go to the toilet. I had the bluray case tucked under my arm while I stepped up to the urinal. I was taking care not to drop it and looking out for urine splotches on the floor. Before I could unzip and take a p*ss, I realised that the booklet had slipped out of the partially opened case and I had stepped on it, bending it a bit and rubbing it into a wet spot on the floor. My immediate thought was "Oh no - I'll have to email Jon Mulvaney - he'll send me a replacement booklet!" Pretty weird, huh?

Isn't it interesting how people aren't the same? It's a fascinating concept, for sure, how we can enjoy the majority of Criterion's output yet still have our own personal likes and interests without having to worry about what others think.

He is hip for sure, and I mean hip in a good way, because I saw it used in a bad way a few posts ago.

I think some of the cloudiness of this Anderson talk is that we are talking about his total output. Granted, CC needs to get the rights to the films before they distribute, but to obtain, and this is just my opinion, make it a priority to get almost all his films is what the discussion is about. There are so many other better selections of American cinema out in the world that CC should introduce, as Pro-B sort of hinted at, that when CC uses their funds and resources to obtain only 1 director, it hurts the "teaching" of what American cinema has to offer.

Oh and I will enjoy my guilty pleasure of The Expendables tonight, courtesy of Blockbuster online...
