I'm definately one of those people who enjoys "movies so bad they're good." I occasionally go to the movies to see films that get universally poor reviews just to see how aweful they really are. Movies like Gigli, Catwoman and Troll 2 I actually find amusing. Troll 2 I was especially happy to see come out on Blu-Ray. My collection is kinda funny like that. You'll see a few really terrible films sitting next to great Criterion films.

I re-watched Dazed and Confused last night (first time for the Criterion version, thanks Amazon) and the "making of documentary". The Documentary is really worth watching. After watching it you'll appreciate how much care went into making this movie. It could have easily been turned into another teen movie with lots of T&A by the studio.

In Criterion's response posted above they implied that there would be no difference in the Blu-ray whether it was sourced from their 6-7 years old transfer or the recent restoration, where the film was scanned at 8K, mastering was done at 4K and 12,000 hours of manual restoration/dirt-and-scratch removal was performed. If that's not arrogance I don't know what is.

The last sentence in the final paragraph makes no sense to me either, when they've released films from 4K scans like Bigger Than Life and The Red Shoes which are both leagues ahead of Il Gattopardo in pure image quality.

Someone posted shots from the new Leopard restoration, and I'm inclined to agree.

From Criterion? Doubtful. It's a Studio Canal-owned film that is now OOP in the collection.

You're correct. I don't have a clue as to what I'm talking about 80% of the time.

I believe Criterion's release was licensed from Anchor Bay Entertainment, and then Criterion's went OOP when MGM issued their DVD.

From what I've seen, Image is supposedly going to release the title on blu-ray in 2011.

Got a quick question. Looking at Criterion's Collection why do they still have the DVD's to movies but didnt release a blu ray version. Like The Rock.... Its still in print but no blu ray version?

I'm going to write an e-mail to Criterion expressing my disappointment, though I guess there's really no chance of getting an updated Blu-ray of The Leopard, so I'll probably have to order the French release and play it with external subtitles on my HTPC.

Regarding the aspect ratio, the Criterion master has the 70mm theatrical ratio of 2.20:1 while the new master uses the full 2.55:1 that's on the Technirama negative. Same thing as with the Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray.

I guess The Rock is pretty popular since it has the best and only special features on any release to date.

I'm guessing Disney has the rights to the Blu-Ray release and they don't give a shit about Criterion doing the DVD since they makes billions of dollars each year.

For one, if Criterion wants to release any of those earlier DVD-only releases on blu-ray they would have to go back and re-negotiate their licensing contract for the blu-ray rights. Criterion released "The Rock" on DVD back in 2001... the first blu-ray discs weren't even released by the major studios until 2006.

Criterion has been releasing DVDs since 1998 and now have over 500 releases on DVD. Criterion didn't release any blu-ray films until the whole high-definition "war" with HD-DVD was over. "Armageddon" is spine #40 and "The Rock" is spine #180. Criterion's first blu-ray didn't come until spine #450.

There are a lot more DVD-only films in the collection, too, that I imagine would come a lot sooner than those Michael Bay films. Disney has already released both "The Rock" and "Armageddon" on blu-ray with great PQ/AQ... with "The Rock," minus one of the two commentaries, carrying over all of the supplements that are on the Criterion DVD.

A member over at AVSfourms has obtained a copy of the Pathe version of The Leopard and has offered up some comparisons. I can't answer as to the accuracy of the contrast or the aspect ration on the new disc, but the resolution is far and away superior to the Criterion. Thoughts?
