I don't think it's that daring of a movie because the subject matter that you're referring to isn't a major theme of the movie to me. It's more about growing up than anything else.

BTW I agree with pro-b and would have liked to see Le souffle au coeur on blu also (that whole 3 film Malle set is so great).

I liked the part where he mentioned the Antonioni films.

He nailed them all this month. He even knew about the Naruse set.

With the single Malle title Criterion keeps their streak alive of not releasing on blu the full contents of any previously released dvd multi-film set.
(I'm not counting Yojimbo/Sanjuro or Monterey)
I mean seriously, it's great that the Malle film is coming out, but will they ever release a full set at once?
Renoir, Bergman, Dreyer, Cassavetes, Truffaut, Wajda, Varda, Teshigahara, Imamura, Rossellini, Sternberg and Costa all have such sets.
Will the streak ever be broken?
imo it will not.

Next month's announcements is what I am scared of, not these.
this is David Fincher's The Game, correct?
i haven't seen a whole lot of Criterion releases, maybe 30 or so, but i cannot understand why they're releasing The Game. i think it's a foolish release. may just be me, but The Game has one of the top 5 dumbest / worst / ridiculous / foolish / "well the last 2 hours were a complete waste of my time" endings i have ever witnessed.

before the atrocious ending the film wasn't even that good to begin with! IMO 3/5, but after the ending, roughly a 1.5/5 - 2/5. and made me have absolutely no feelings for ever watching it again. few films i can say truly have a bad ending / twist, whatever, The Game is one of them. really want to know why Criterion thinks it deserves a release by them

what i was saying was that most Criterion releases serve some sort of purpose in terms of film history. be it the film doing something new in directing, or the story, maybe acting or being important some other way.

The Game isn't important in any way.

that's why i asked. but thanks for your riveting answer.

I responded the way I did because you sounded so smug about it.

well, my apologies for that. i just cannot believe how the end of that movie came about. just... just baffling in awfulness. and while the CC isn't made entirely of 5/5 masterpieces, i would surely think they could find something, anything better than The Game

but i'm sure others would say this exact same sentence, just take out "The Game" and insert their dislikes in the CC, which i'm sure has been done before. but where some puzzling choices i can see at least lead to great discussion or contain some individual greatness about it, i don't see The Game delivering in either regard.

Interesting set of release for March, it's really a month that will be out of the ordinary.

I will pick up Yi Yi for sure, really enjoyed this movie and the Mikio Naruse set.

Well, it won't be the first time that it's being released by Criterion. Criterion released "The Game" on laserdisc back in 1998. So, I imagine that they are fans of the film.

Criterion has just announced their March 2011 releases:

The Mikado (1939, Victor Schetzinger)
The Times of Harvey Milk (1984, Robert Epstein)
Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987, Louis Malle)
Topsy-Turvy (1999, Mike Leigh)
Yi Yi (2000, Edward Yang)

They've finally gotten to Leigh, which is awesome.
