It's worth it. The only stinker in the set is DRIVE, HE SAID.

Walkabout is good. Sunrise is a wonderful movie.

How is For All Mankind? And how do you think it would compare to In the Shadow of the Moon?

Back when the releases were announced, people were upset about Enter the Void not being chosen. Has there been any hints/suggestions for it?

I've never seen the film, but I did just see Irreversible last night. I enjoyed that film, so would I like Enter the Void?

I haven't seen In the Shadow of the Moon, but in my opinion For All Mankind is amazing. It is one of my favorite Criterion releases. Just a warning though, it is not like your typical documentary, so it might be a good idea to check it out before buying it.

The BBS collection just dropped ($15.50) to $71.99. Not quite as low as it was just a bit ago ($69.99), but good news for those of us who received Amazon gift cards for Xmas.

No guarantee they will work, but they should if you haven't used them already. Members should get free shipping as well, not sure what the situation would be for non-members.

You are the man!

And yes the coupon did work. It came out to $57.70. Shipping is free. And my free 2 month membership lapses in a couple of days, so just in time too. Thanks fdm!

Just picked up Criterion's Gimme Shelter which was 40% off at cnl warehouse here in vancouver- also bought what seemed to be their last copy of CC's The Man who fell to earth...it was $42 plus 12% discount...they had two copies of Zodiac...bought one so if you live in the area you should grab the other ...it was only $27 plus there 's a sale discount....
Really looking forward to Sweet Smell of Success and the rumoured Carlos on CC....have a great year watching great flicks everyone!

I don't know about anyone else in this thread, but I find it hard to recommend someone blindbuy a set of 7 films of which they've only seen one. No matter how good the one film is. I agree with what one poster said above, that Drive, He Said is the only "stinker" in the set. However, no matter, it's still hard to tell someone to go and buy such a huge expensive set because they've only seen one film and liked it.

I'm sure you could Netflix Easy Rider or The King of Marvin Gardens and that may help you decide.

Just watched Mystery Train. Did anyone else get a subtle Pulp Fiction vibe from that movie?

Interesting. I didn't personally, at least not in terms of pace. Jarmusch is almost comatose and relaxing compared to Tarantino's mania. They do both have overlapping episodes and ensemble casts though, so I can see where you might find a similarity.

Well #1 definately applies to me. But I also watch a ton of movies on Netflix, especially the Criterion distributed films available. In my view Criterion is a trustworthy "brand." From past experience I've been at the very least satisfied with all but a couple of the dozens of Criterion Blu-Rays that I bought blind. They are really the only distributor that I feel completely comfortable blind buying films from.

The video dissecting Bigger Than Life is really stretching its credibility...the guy is claiming there is "homosexual overtones" from Walter Mathau? WTF.

I've only seen four of the movies. I dislike Five Easy Pieces, think Head is a waste of time (in today's context) and have seen Easy Rider enough times to last my lifetime. Still, The Last Picture Show is one of my favorite movies (see signature) so given that we may not see these released individually by Criterion and the fact that Criterion Blu-rays go out of print sometimes I had to make the purchase. And I'm a cheapskate.

I think Criteroion is better than most other distributors because they are not the studio to make the movie.
they have a choice in what movies to distribute, and thus, understandingly, they dont want to release craps to preserve their reputation.
It is natural and anyone would do that. We shouldnt associate it with some "speciality" associated with Criterion only.

Too late.
I normally wouldn't blind buy a set like this, but I really enjoy the Last Picture Show, and if some of these films share a similar aesthetic then I find it hard to believe that I wouldn't enjoy any of them. Couple that with that fact that I could easily resell this set used for a profit if I really don't find it worth keeping.

Those things worked in my favor, so I bit. 7 films (that aren't Syfy originals) and a nice big booklet sold for $56 shipped is a good deal.

For all Mankind is essential if you have any interest in the subject matter.
