I love train films, and I guess my expectations were too high.

The plot for NTTM didn't sound anything like TLV except for the "train" part, and as I read a little deeper on imdb, it does feature 2 of the same actors paired up together. I also think the writers were the same. But would that make it a spinoff?

Thinking of taking part in the B&N Buy 2 get 3rd free sale with two orders once I get paid. Just having some troubles picking my last 2(essentially, my freebies). However, I'd rather get 3 and enjoy them all than get 6 and only enjoy four or five of them(also gonna probably get Chungking Express from the Criterion Store,too).

The ones that I want for sure are Seven Samurai, Breathless, The 400 Blows, and Pierrot Le Fou. I'm pretty open to suggestion on the last couple. I enjoy most genres (and even if I don't enjoy a particular genre/film, I've studied/am studying film, so I can at least get something from any film,even if only on an academic level), and obviously do not mind foreign/classic films. I was thinking about The Thin Red Line and/or possibly House, since those two seem like great releases. What would you guys recommend?



I also hope Tokyo Story receives a CC Blu release. Another great Japanese classic I'd love to see upgraded to Blu is Rashomon. That'd make my picking of my two freebies way easier

M and Modern Times are the two I would recommend. M because it's an amazing movie and Modern Times because, though not his best, it's made by one of the greats (Chaplin).

Yes, but factor in the membership discount of 10% if you're a member, and the normal everyday 10% off of the Criterion BDs that they usually have when there is no other real sale going on. These discounts will stack bringing the total to something like $21-$23 per title. In store, there's no extra shipping costs, so it still is a good deal IMO.

B&N is still listing Pierrot le fou as being in stock. Hope that's not just a mistake(out of the three French films I was looking to pick up, that was the one I was most interesting in viewing). But if that is the case, yeah, I'll probably just pick of SS, Breathless, and 400 Blows and then CE from the CC store.

If you order "Chungking Express" from Criterion, make sure to order the plastic replacement case as well. You can get it from them for $5.00. That includes shipping. Once you get the case, add the disc and booklet from the original packaging, and you are good to go. Details for ordering replacement cases can be found in the first post of this thread.

You're presuming he prefers plastic over cardboard.

I've been waiting for over a month for my The Third Man replacement case. Apparently they're out of stock. I assume they're out of the cover art rather than the case itself.

Yeah, it isn't a quick process. I ordered 3 cases (Last Year at Marienbad, The Third Man, and The Man Who Fell To Earth) in mid-October and didn't get them until the end of December. Not something that I needed immediately, so that's ok. I didn't mind the wait.

Amazon has random price drops. B&N has the 50% sale twice a year. But it's not my money, so I'll shut up about it now.

EDIT: I also readily admit to being a tightwad. I think I got all but 3 titles in my collection at 50% or more off of list price.

Well, you've made some great points, and you're right, its our money to do with what we please, and for me, with January being a month in which 5 titles are being released on BD, I'm going for it. I only need to pick up one more title to make it 6, and there are plenty I can find to meet the quota.

For me, the amount of things I'll buy at B&N will more than make up the $25 membership cost. Shoot, the past two 50% off sales for me made up for a couple of years worth of memberships!

Plus, I buy a lot of cafe drinks...a coupla cents here and there add up as well

I will not pass up a $23 Criterion BD...especially when that price may go to 27.99 on Amazon or something. Amazon is so sporadic with their sales, and the titles are so random which are discounted.

Hey, I'm sure we can go back and forth for hours explaining our rationale...as long as we enjoy our purchases, that's all that matters!

I don't get to buy CC very often(basically only when I get my financial aid checks :P), and unfortunately for me, most of the good CC sales(B&N's 50% sales) are during my broke times. But yeah, I'll keep mulling it over, and if two more don't jump out to me(initially I didn't realize that B&N only had the DVD of Chungking Express, so I thought I had five titles picked out), I'll probably just buy the three French titles. Seven Samurai isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
