yeah kind of odd with that title on BLU no one seems to have it any longer, well CRITERION does at their site. Seems odd DVD of the release seems ok to get currently.

I wonder if they are updating it in the clear plastic case? and the changeover is just eliminating the old stock. (seems unlikely, but you'd think there'd be more info on the titles lack of availability)

I wondered the same thing about the cases, but it seems strange that they wouldn't overlap between the two versions.

Has anyone emailed Criterion and asked them about "Chungking Express"?

Just checked the Criterion site. They have 298 copies in stock. Any number higher than that, and you see the "Estimated ship date 30 Jan 2011" message.

I just placed my order for CHUNGKING EXPRESS on Criterion's site.

Now I guess I need to place a PAYPAL order for a plastic replacement case. (I take it those are still available as always before I know the procedure to order etc.)

I recently ordered a case for it along with the case for "El Norte." I haven't received any email yet, stating it wasn't available.

Chungking Express is a Miramax/Rolling Thunder Pictures release. It could be the sell of Miramax means it's going OOP since The Weinsteins are in with Starz/Anchor Bay

It is in stock at dvdempire for $32.98

In terms of the blu being out of stock and removed from most websites, a question still remains. Why is the DVD edition still listed?

Did Chungking Express get released with a plastic case in stores or will it always need to have a replacement ordered if it can be gotten hold of?

In stores I have only seen it in the paper case, so you should still be able to order a plastic replacement case for the title.

Bottom line, Benjamin Buttons is a glorious looking and sounding film. If you like the movie and are considering a purchase, you should have no reservations regarding the technical merits.

EDIT:

And if you haven't seen it, I would say "rent it" if you can do so cheaply, but it's not a terrible blind-buy....

and if you have seen the film, and think the film is crap..... then even it were in 5080P, 18.6 surround sound, in holographic 4-D..... you shouldn't buy it.... PQ/AQ makes good films better, and bad films worse..... but they never make bad-films better or good films worse

In regards to Chungking Express: It's gotta be because of the case switchover. If there were any chance that it was going OOP, they'd let the public know. The last time an OOP happened, they gave at least a month/2 month notice so that people had time to buy them, and even then some of those OOP's from then are still lingering around having not been bought. Until you hear something directly from Criterion, I wouldn't think otherwise.

I do, however, think that its a great film and that if you don't have it, you should definitely pick it up.

For those in need, Borders.com has "The Man Who Fell to Earth" Blu-ray in stock for $37.99 Use the code (BJL2968U) for 33% off, and get the release for $28.43 (which includes $2.98 S&H). I would act fast.
