Is it just me or is Tony Curtis wearing too much eye makeup in SSoS?

Curtis is persistent like a schoolboy in this film, but Lancaster commands this booming presence.

I don't really see SSoS as a film noir.

Yeah, it's a close call.

Is some senses it plays a lot more like a straight dark drama in the Citizen Kane, All About Eve vein but it definitely has strong noir elements.

Stylistically it's very noir, the main characters are at best morally challenged and while there's no femme fatale per se seduction is the driving force.

I probably wouldn't list it if I were rattling off noirs but I can't see arguing (too strenuously, anyway) with anybody who does.

The 2006 book? Yes I bought it when it first came out, very nice one too. I also have most of her movies, I am missing the very early ones that are impossible to find on DVD. I am so bad with her, I even get movies like The Unforgiven with Burt Lancaster which I really don't enjoy as an actor but she is in the movie. My wife keep's saying she will make me sleep on the couch because of Audrey Hepburn

how I understand... I own almost everything, including Green Mansions for instance
I almost had an heart attack when I saw Charade released by Criterion on blu ! the first Audrey Hepburn blu...

then....
I would die to see Roman Holiday / Vacances Romaines on blu-ray...
Is there a plan by Paramount to be released on blu-ray ???
I've watched it again during XMas, and was thinking (the DVD is not so bad) how this movie would be great in blu-ray...

I don't want to turn this into a Audrey Hepburn thread and have the wrath of others here on me

I don't follow release rumors that much but I think Paramount is not realeasing as many of their old movies compare to other studios. Still I am sure it will be coming at one point.

I don't know why Criterion releases garbage like 8 1/2, The Seventh Seal, and The 400 Blows. Those movies have no heart, no soul.

I want to see Gigli, Norbit, Agent Cody Banks, and Runaway Bride on Criterion Blu-Ray. Now those are some great films! And while they are taking my suggestions, how about a Criterion box set of the Twilight Saga? Please!

I'm excited for Wait Until Dark this weekend.... One of the best videos I've seen of Hepburn is a screen test for Roman Holiday where the interviewer asks her if the Germans knew about the secret ballet performances put on in Holland. She smiles and replies "they didn't know about it". Beautiful.

Well Beta...in my attempt to stay Criterion...

I've got Lindsay Anderson's "If..." coming for the weekend from NetFlix. I went to see another of his films "O' Lucky Man!", when it was released in 1975. It wasn't until this week that not only did I realize that both were directed by Anderson, but both have Malcolm McDowell as the "Mick Travis" character.

Has anyone seen both films and is "O' Lucky Man!" in any way a followup to "If..." ?

I have only seen "If..."

I think you'll enjoy it.... but I'm certainly curious to hear your thoughts about "O' Lucky Man!"

Well, I said in my review that SSoS reminds me of the grittiness/corruptness of Fritz Lang's The Big Heat combined with the drama of Citizen Kane. The main characters aren't gangsters, cops, and detectives, but nor were they in Sunset Blvd. People get bent out-of-shape restricting the film-noir genre/time period, but I just think of film-noir as all 1940s/1950s shadowy crime dramas. So I'm pretty inclusive with my definition of noir, and I count films such as Ace in the Hole, Leave Her to Heaven (which is in color), Blast of Silence (which came out in the 60s), Night of the Hunter, and Sweet Smell of Success under this inclusive definition. For instance, many trademarks of noir can be seen in SSoS's depiction of the underworld of urban life (cynical outlook, flawed protagonist, use of sexual tension, shady morals, stylish low-key photography).

anybody know why Criterion didn't replicate the dvd release of The Double Life of Veronique on bd as far as the packaging?
it came in a plastic case so they broke their continuity of creating duplicate micro versions of the dvd versions that have slipboxes with the cardboard disc holders?
just makes no sense to me.
I'm certainly not a fan of the paper releases, but since they had started copying the dvd versions--like with Breathless, Amarcord, and Seven Samurai--it seems like they would have kept the continuity going.
I'm not trying to obsess about packaging by any means, but it just surprised me.
any thoughts?

Watched it last night for the first time...ever, and I must say I was impressed. The acting was superb, and the dialogue alone was worth the price of admission!

really?

I'm just joking. I'm sure only someone involved with the decision making process could tell you the answer to that.

Probably because the booklet did not require anything larger then the plastic case in which it is held. The booklets that accompany the cardboard releases are much, much thicker and larger and will not fit in a plastic case.
