I tend to think we're good with what we have - from a 'User' standpoint... I enjoy reading ALL criterion in one spot. I can just catch up with pages I have missed instead of thread hopping.

This is kind of the 'WalMart' thread regarding criterion... and I must say I like it

Has there been any other indications that ANYONE is prepping this for a BD release???? I will certainly pick this one up when I have the opportunity to do so.
hey beta, here's a link to an article from criterioncast where Assayas reveals Criterion is putting out Carlos and it will have the theatrical cut as well as the almost 6 hour tv version. http://criterioncast.com/2010/12/21/...ction-in-2011/

if i remember correctly, Carlos was also a part of the wacky new years drawing.

Thanks....

I recalled discussion, but didn't know it involved Criterion giving any actual clues (New Years drawing)

Now I don't have to worry about only getting one version or the other! I'm working through the T.V. version.... not sure if the theatrical is available on Netflix or not.... I just saw it, and said "Hey Carlos!" and the wife and I have watched the first two over the past few days.... I would have probably watched the 3rd immediately after the 2nd but my wife can't deprive herself of sleep like me

A very cool film
I've pretty consistently felt that Criterion dvds upscale nicely, and Le Samourai was no exception. Glad you liked it too!

Is it sad that I seem to count the days to Criterion's announcements every 15th of every month?

So in looking forward to every release (or at least most of them) and looking forward to every announcement, I never seem to get a day's rest.

Woe is me

Perhaps I need to do more A/B comparisons, but I feel like I'm part of the minority that watches their DVDs on DVD players..... I think upscaled DVDs resemble the effects that Blu-rays with too much post-production processing (DNR/EE) have, and prefer the look of DVDs in their native form....

Either I don't know what I'm talking about (very possible) or the same people who scorn DNR and EE (which I readily admit I don't care for) are the same people who prefer 'upscaling' which to me, is the effect of adding resolution using tools within the player, and not actual data from the disc itself.

If it is too "unwieldy," then I would go with octagon's suggestion of a subforum for individual releases.

I'm all for locking a "Criterion Blu-ray Release" thread in this forum, right where it is, as a sticky, with a list of covers with links to their releases (which we have now, and is great thanks to Pro-B mostly I believe)

The first post would continue to contain FAQs, Case-replacement info, contact info, etc....

A new thread could be created in the Movies/Discussions forum so discussion that wasn't Blu-ray specific, or contained things of a "Wish-list" nature, or just recent films that are screening, the happenings at Cannes, etc. etc. would all fit into the topic, and not be discouraged.

Coffee-grinder discussion still would be considered "off-topic" but nobody's perfect

I wanted to chime in here. I also like having the one Criterion thread for ewverything. Whether it's "fair" or not, we do have a little clique here, and I think that generally, the posters that come to this thread know what to expect. If we kept the thread to "general Criterion discussions", we wouldn't really have a lot to talk about outside of posting the new releases once a month, and discussing problems, the latter of which are rare, but also rather an annoyance (one of the few times I've dreaded coming in here is when there is a problem and users come in and post and re-post the same questions looking for solutions, like the case replacements issue). As to the size of this thread, if that's really an issue, then it might just be best to go the Criterionforum.org route and make a Criterion sub-forum for individual releases, with separate threads in there for speculation and for Criterion-related film discusiions. I'm sure this will eventually have to happen anyway, because the Collection is only going to get bigger over the years, and this thread is already one of the largest (in terms of size and views) on Blu-ray.com.

EDIT: Also, just to make myself clear, I totally understand the concerns of Deciazulado from a manegerial standpoint. This thread is unweildy for anyone not accustomed to it, and I can see how it would be difficult for any user (especially new users) not acquainted with the Collection to extract information from it beyond the review links on the first page.

I would be in favor of a Criterion Collection sub-forum in which each film in the Criterion Blu-Ray collection had its own individual thread for discussion purposes. I think this would be a lot more user friendly. We could have useful/helpful stickied threads at the top of the forum, such as General Discussion, Recommendations, an Introduction thread, and a Sales thread or Announcements perhaps.

I'm happy with this thread, and I like to monitor it and ask/offer recommendations from time-to-time, but I do agree that it's intimidating for the uninitiated.

EDIT: As a potentially unrelated side-note, I have tried to edit this post and lost data/parts of my post both times. Now I'm starting to wonder if this thread is blowing up the database.

I think that this thread is fine. However, the idea of a dedicated Criterion sub-forum is a good idea as well, and would work nicely I think.

I've always felt that having individual threads for specific releases is the ideal route. If a person who has no idea what Criterion is, but is interested in one of their titles, they're not going to check the Criterion thread. A sub-forum would be a step in the right direction. Still, other than the niche aspect of Criterion releases, they're still blu-ray movies and I tend to think they should have their threads among the regular blu-ray titles. So while I like the idea of a sub-forum, I'm still not sure that will best serve the blu-ray.com forum community as a whole.

At the same time, I like what goes on in this thread and wouldn't want to see this niche community disappear. (But I'm not sure if it is blu-ray.com's responsibility to provide an avenue for what this thread is currently serving as.)

I just watched Senso for the first time. Really good film. Question I have is has anyone watched the English language version, The Wanton Countess? Is it worth watching?

How about this:

Retain the 'feel' of this thread by adding a Criterion SubForum. Then, having a thread titled "General Criterion Banter" as a sticky at the top.

Other Sticky should be "Criterion Replacement Packaging" for those that missed the info on getting plastic cases for Digipacks.

Then, individual threads could be created for each individual release. Ideally this would be done by a moderator to prevent us crazies in the masses from making duplicate threads.

This allows usability to the uninitiated, the retention of the "blah blah about criterion" thread - which I like, and information from page one of the current thread.

.02 more for the group to consider.

I agree. One stop shopping. Can't see myself following more than a thread or two at most.

I'm just waiting for the Criterion Carlos release myself, but those recent MoC Antonioni releases are close to putting me in the region-free camp. And I suppose I could catch up on some of their other locked blus. And.. And.. And that's probably enough to convince me to stay the region locked course. For now. Probably will pick up the Antonionis anyway, watch the DVDs. Stay the course, stay the course. Resistance is becoming futile.

And there is that implicit standing death threat from the wife.

Hope my current blu-ray player breaks soon.
