So I bought Cronos. Looks like my kind of film and my kind of disc. I think I will be happy with it.

I watched that on Netflix streaming and will definitely pick it up during the next Criterion sale. I thought it was a great film.

Do Criterion's covers have to use "a film by?" I know who it is by. I don't need added pretensions.

They very well might have to. There was an article posted here several weeks ago detailing the process by which they developed the Sweet Smell of Success cover art and I was surprised to learn how much of the cover art is covered by contract.

In the case of SSoS the cover had to feature headshots of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and they had to be the same size.

It was pretty interesting.

I honestly have never seen it, But any Malle is usually more than worth your time. I posted a link to a trailer I found a while back. Like I said before, any trailer where a girl is wearing a gas mask must mean the film is good.
Here it is.

You know who it is by... by that doesn't mean I or Mr. Doe does. I've always loved that they put in on there. More than once I've been sorting through my collection, wondered who a director was, and rather than being forced to squint at 3pt font on the back of a blu-ray case, it is right there easy for me to read.

Besides, it doesn't really strike me as any different from a music label putting a band name on a CD cover.

The director's name is fine. But "a film by" is annoying and pretentious. Why not just go with apostrophe s? Yojimbo and Sanjuro single releases do that.

MOC/Eureka and BFI also do that on many of their covers. Honestly, most finer film distributors/studios have been doing that for years. It's not pretentious, but rather a 'qualifier of quality'

So they do. I'd rather see things get switched up every once and awhile. What about doing A (insert Director's name) film? Or even using "Directed by." At least things would stay somewhat interesting.

hmmm. I think it would be more prudent if the next batch utilized ceramics.
