I personally think they should do some animation. Lots of deserving titles out there, especially in the non-US realm.
It would be great if they release La Planete Sauvage on Blu-ray

Another Kubrick?

I find it strange that everyone is always complaining there is already too many Kurosawa out but no one ever mention Kubrick. Nine movies of his have been release on Blu-ray. I understand he is a fairly popular director but I wish they would give us one Ozu on Blu-ray instead.

I agree, though I haven't seen as much Ozu as I should. Tokyo Story is such a good movie. As much as I like Ran, Seven Samurai, etc. it would be nice to see a Blu-ray out of Japan that doesn't have swords in it. I'm thinking not just Tokyo Story, but also Ikiru.

I don't know. Considering how few movies he's done over the years I think we're pretty lucky to have one Jarmusch. Personally Night on Earth is my favorite. I would really love to see Criterion do that one.
Yes...the fictional town of "East Bath" was a film combination of mostly Beacon (where I live), a little Fishkill, and a drop of Poughkeepsie. They started filming the Fall/Winter of 1993, after I had moved there over the summer. I originally had a deposit on the lavender Victorian that Melanie Griffith lived in, but we backed out, as the monthly mortgage would have killed me. I bought a more modest house that was almost used in the film as well.

I'm really surprised that we haven't seen any Ozu as of yet. Maybe they are waiting for 2013, which would be the 50th anniversary of his death.

No argument from me Pat! I already own the MoC version and LOVE it! That release is what pushed me to buy a region free player.

I think La Planete Sauvage and/or Grave of the Fireflies would be good first choices for an animation title release by CC on blu.

There are his more mainstream movies for which he was nominated for Academy Awards and won one I think (for Elmer Gantry), but also a slew of lesser known gems. Ulzana's Raid was, at the time of it's release, one of the most gritty and graphic westerns since Sam Peckinpah, but I think is mostly forgotten now. Same with Go Tell the Spartans, which was pretty low budget and Lancaster took reduced salary - and contributed his own money when the budget ran short - but is one of the best Vietnam moves ever made, in my opinion. It had the misfortune to be released the same year as the Deer Hunter.
I found "I Walk Alone" by accident and decided to watch it...Kirk plays a great "prick" of a character in it. Burt, as always, does a great job.

And Beta...it's streamable on NetFlix! That's how I saw it.

I wouldn't know how to narrow it down to a select list of titles I'd like to see Criterion release (and as long as they are treated well by whichever studio, that is fine by me) but I thought of two that would have a compelling history to explore on a definite release like Criterion would do where as the studio definitely wouldn't.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Sydney Pollack.1969)
Little Big Man (Arthur Penn.1970)

And one that I don't think could even be a possibility, Disney never would license a film of theirs correct? (though they let Anchor Bay release it on DVD before they did), and I'm not sure if the film would be a fit for Criterion anyway, but.. Never Cry Wolf (1983).

I think it is an okay film, and I originally had it because I want to see more Russian/Soviet-era upgrades from the collection. But truth be told I meant to replace it with Le Samourai.

So it is with tearful regret I must eliminate Ulzana's Raid, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Battle of Algiers, etc., (as well as my intended Le Samourai) to get my new 10 total films list:

Gallipoli
Go Tell the Spartans (late career Burt Lancaster, overlooked gem about Vietnam)
The Year of Living Dangerously
Day of the Jackal
Mountains of the Moon (a film by Bob Rafelson)
Soldier of Orange (Dutch version)
The Ascent
The Cranes Are Flying
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Night Train to Munich
I updated yours. I'll leave the voting open a little longer. I don't think there's many left who haven't put in their requests.

I'm going to issue a Top 10 Requested directors and a Top 10 Requested films when the polls close.

I've come across it before, but it doesn't interest me enough to read other people's text-based reviews on the plot of a film.

Amazon seems to have all of June's pre-orders up now, except for "Zazie dans le metro".

Isn't that a little different?

Kubrick directed (if you exclude the never released "Fear and Desire") 12 movies when Kurosawa doubled that number. Also, Warner has always been fairy enthusiastic with Kubrick catalogue. It's no surprise that his most acclaimed movies are out.

On the new spine front, there is a couple titles I would love to see:

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Judgment at Nuremberg
12 Angry Men (which we know is on the way)
Cape Fear (either one)

As for upgrades:

Battle of Algiers
High Low
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifters (One of my all time favorites)
Brazil
Rushmore
Rashomon (That one is supposed to come out soon too, right?)
Gate of Flesh
the Friends Of Eddie Coyle
The Human Condition
Homicide
Z
Stranger Than Paradise
Night On Earth
This Sporting Life
If...

I know there are more, but I keep the list at that for now

For all the people that has been/was looking up Scanavo cases (pretty much everybody on here at one point), here is what Criterion has to say today after having the replacement cases now on their site:

Quote:
we'll have blank, empty clear Blu-ray cases on the site soon.
I wonder how much they will charge, but still, good news.

Criterion Replacement Cases now live!!!

Still $5 a pop, but there doesn't seem to be a discount now when you order multiple cases like before. Also, since the cases are being bought through the Shop now, the $5 per case doesn't seem to include shipping, either.

And I remember people complaining that it was $25 to order all 9 cases through the PayPal system. Now, it looks like it's gonna cost someone $45 for all 9 cases plus shipping since it's under $50.

Beta,
I think it's now time to update the first page with this link and take out the e-mail regarding the replacement cases since it's no longer needed.

What, just American/Hollywood releases?

No Country For Old Men
Halloween 2
Step Brothers
Eastern Promises (it's considered Canada/Europe, but still)
Observe & Report

I got alot more, but these came into my mind. I use to watch There Will Be Blood alot (went to the cinemas twice on opening week) but it got a little boring after. I like Paul Thomas Anderson, but I'm just waiting for a new film.

See I like other stuff too.

CC, my post is for Criterion saying they will soon put blank/clear/brand spanking new Cases for sale on their site. I'm sure you knew that, it just seemed that your post was thinking my post was talking about the replacement cases that I knew was up today.

When I first read it, I did read it as Criterion talking about their replacement cases, but after I re-read your post I realized you were referring to blank, nude cases. I've corrected my post by not quoting you.

I updated the first post..... I wanted to order an extra, but it's $11 after shipping if you don't spend $50, so I'll wait for another "code" to get a break on the prices, and hopefully cancel my June-pre-orders with Amazon and order directly from Criterion. The $50 GC is nice, but just for the June pre-orders, it would be an extra $25 to order from them rather than Amazon.
