'The Woman in the Window' came out on a very nice disc from MGM, and may still be available - much better then the crap public domain versions.

Another Lang I'd recommend to you is 'The House by the River'. It too came out from Kino but apparently has some issues. I picked up the French PAL version which looks stellar.

I hope to stream The Woman in the Window over the next week. And thanks to you, I've found and moved The House by the River to the top of the queue...I might rent it for the weekend.

Thanks again for the suggestion!

2 questions:
1. will eclipse/arthouse essential series/etc. come to Blu-Ray in time? seems likely doesn't it? i know BD is a premium experience... but it is simply a format. in time, Criterion will probably quickly encode a film for people to watch in BD w/o expensive and time consuming process for a regular release. also, as price have continued to drop on Blu-Rays, it makes more and more economic sense to add value by bundling up essential series and so on.

2. as a side note about essential/arthouse series. are they often a re-packaging of previously releases or do they really get a new PQ/AQ facelift and a new encode?

Just a repackaging minus the extras that were included on the main line release. There are, however, some titles that are only in the Essential Arthouse series... some OOP, too.

are there any booklets at all in Essential series? is it basically like a boxset Eclipse built around a theme?

i know that there's a few titles that have gone through new encodes w/improved PQ and stuff on the Essential series vs. the original release.

I really can't recall right now. I have a few a home, but I'm not sure how the inserts are delegated per release. Some of the main line releases-turned Essential Arthouse may just have a chapter list while the EA-only titles may have a small essay written inside.

Thanks for sharing. I quite like the cover. It's simple but perfect for the film which is great, imo. I'll be re-visiting the film many more times.

all of Kurosawa's Criterion catalog will eventually hit Blu-Ray. just a matter of when.

also, probably depends on copyright owners too. i think i remember seeing a thing about Rashomon being shown theatrically last year, so i think that's next. being shown in cinema is typically a sign that a new print/restoration has been done and it's coming through either Rialto or Janus.

If I had to guess I'd say not anytime soon.

I can't find it but several weeks ago Criterion posted a set of 'snapshots from the offices' and one of them was a Drunken Angel film can.

Assuming that was a teaser (and it might have just been an interesting photo - no more, no less) then High and Low is likely even farther down the road.

Thanks guys.
I just hate the idea of buying a dvd - even at a good price - only to see it come out on blu.

DRUNKEN ANGEL before HIGH AND LOW would seem like an odd choice to me.

I broke down and bought The Thin Red Line because I don't expect it to ever get cheaper. Solaris has been pre-ordered as well.

I'm also thinking about attempting to get a two-disc Criterion case to put Button in.

Anybody know the best option for a Canadian (me) who wants to buy Criterions? The majority of them are very expensive on Amazon.ca and mindblowingly costly in stores. Is eBay the better option?

I've only been collecting them for a couple of months and have found it hard to get them under $30. Future Shop had a sale in November where most of them were $27. I only found out after the sale was over, but they stupidly left the sale prices on 2 months later. They rang up at full prices, but when I showed them the price markers, they gave them to me them for $16.99 each. I also lucked out scoring the Yojimbo/Sanjuro combo for $44 at HMV b/c they stuck the sticker tag for Yojimbo single disk on the movie.

I picked up 6 of them during Criterions 50% sale, but shipping and duties alone came to $56! The average price of the 6 was still $31, but included higher price items like Leopard, Night of The Hunter and Chungking Express. Generally, what I've got off of Ebay or Amazon.ca marketplace has been about $30 shipped as well. $30 seems to be the magic number.

Any Canadians have experience ordering from the BN sale? How did it go?
