Friday's prediction:

Since it was hinted at in the last picture laden newsletter...I predict Tokyo Story, as I'd really like the supplemental material and commentary that is not on the BFI blu-ray.

And the Apu trilogy better be on blu too.
I have no direct knowledge, but I've heard the elements for Apu are not in great shape and that may apply to all of these films...so, while not ideal, I would take an eclipse series of Ray.

As far as my own wish-list, I'm gonna go with the titles that have been around for ages, Four Feathers, Picnic, Y Tu Mamá También, Red River, Foreign Correspondent, might as well throw The Game in and maybe another Wes Anderson. Oh yeah, and The Last Movie. That's the ticket.

Bah, all they have to do is throw in a silent and you won't care if the rest are Kurosawa and Wes Anderson.

I would love for Tambien. One of the great movies of the last 20 years. The Game would be great as well. Although it would be nice if they could somehow change the horrendous ending. Come on Fincher, have an alternate ending you want to put on it.

I haven't heard any news, but I did rewatch my DVD last week and I would love to see this title announced.

Y Tu Mama Tambien would be a perfect summer release considering the whole atmosphere of the film.

That screenshot was definitely HD so a Blu-ray release is possible (unless they decide to withhold it for some reason, but I don't know if they'd do that at this point.)

And if they do indeed release the Apu trilogy after all this time and it turns out to be DVD-only then I agree, "disappointing" would be the understatement of the year.

Needless to say I would not buy them either.

I am sure I must be the last person alive or at least in this thread to have seen this movie but in anycase,

I watched Black Narcissus last night. I first heard about it last year when the release was made In Blu-ray. Since I never do blind buy (I am not as adventurous as many of you ) I placed it on my very long rental list on ZIP. about 12 days ago it was playing on a classic movie channel and so got it on my DVR. Please don't jump on me, it was not even in HD.

The movie was quite wonderful. I was surprise by it actually. I was expecting a much different thing than what I saw. How can I explain this? It almost felt as a Hollywood production or I tought I was seeing a Hollywood production from that time. I am not sure what I was expecting but I was expecting something else. I know, I am not making much sense, sorry just not sure how to explain it.

The movie was quite enjoyable. It was a wonderful story and the characters where well played and interesting. I was shock to learn after that everything was done in Pinewood studios, I was sure everything had been done with exterior on location. Great work on cinematography and lighting.

Second to last: I keep meaning to record it when I see it on TCM but haven't gotten around to looking for it.

Speaking of TCM, I sort of lost track of them because until recently Comcast wasn't carrying their HD channel in Chicago but they've had a hell of a lineup the past few months. I caught Rififi a few weeks ago and it was excellent. My immediate thoughts were along the lines of 'eh, kind of a low-rent Asphalt Jungle or The Killing' but over the course of the film that 'low-rent' aspect really started to grow on me.

Make that third to last. I almost picked this up during one of the BN sales based on how much I like the rest of their movies that I have seen. Instead I added it to the Netflix list and will pick it up during the next sale. For me the clincher is that on top of being a P and P film it also has Deborah Kerr, who I have been fond ever since I first saw The Innocents (and, of course, An Affair to Remember).

The actress that kept confusing me was Kathleen Byron (the disturb nun). For some reason when I was saw her on screen I tought it was Ingrid Bergman. Just seeing her face (covered in that nun outfit) I was convince it was Ingrid. Might be just me but it was almost a copy or if I can be a Star Wars fan in here for a second, a clone .

Does anybody else find the bulk of the Diabolique Three Reasons trailer kind of shrill and just...off? The opening and the first reason are pretty cool and the third reason is quite cool (and fairly well done) but everything in between almost sounds like they're pitching a cheap Hitchcock knockoff.

I usually love the Three Reasons but I thought this one might have been a bit iffy

Where is this newsletter? I would be very happy with a Tokyo Story blu-ray release!

Hmmm...I might be wrong about this...could have sworn there was a pictoral reference in the last New Years card, regarding Tokyo Story (I just checked). Maybe wishful thinking on my part.

A Far out prediction for Friday - EVITA - I call this one because the films cinematographer was in the Criterion offices some months back, doesn't mean anything I know. Also Disney doesn't seem interested in releasing many of their feature film titles at all, and I think they could get the licensing easily since they released the massive LD box set years back.

Hopefully Criterion will try and get Sidney Lumet's The Fugitive Kind out on Blu-Ray this year.

No, Darius Khondji did a lot of other films as well. Delicatessen and City of the Lost Children, for example, seem more in Criterion's alley. But those are Studio Canal, so who knows?
