I saw that too. That would become my favorite upgrade, as the Arrow UK release has been delayed and the rumbling in that thread point to a lot of DNR used on it from early reports. Hopefully Criterion can come up with a home-run on this one too!! I would hate to retire the dvd, but a gem like this is a must-have on blu..

I'd prefer Il generale della Rovere (starring De Sica) from Criterion over Bicycle Thieves (directed by De Sica), which already has two English-friendly Blu-ray releases in Europe.

Il generale della Rovere is available in France from Gaumont and that Blu-ray looks fantastic but has no English subtitles.

I don't see any Bicycle Thieves hint. They name dropped 3 films to talk about Vittorio De Sica, which also includes video clips of his acting in IL GENERALE DELLA ROVERE, so picking straws out of the stack is what this is.

The Criterion dvd release of generale is very good too and english friendly. If I remember correctly, the Italian and Arrow releases are both region-locked and on BD25 discs, so something left to be desired. Criterion would definetly put this on a nice BD50, so that us North Americans can enjoy it too...

CG, speculating about releases is half the fun, don't you agree??

Yeah, but they have name dropped alot of titles (De Palma's Sisters, 400 Blows which already has a blu, Monica Vitti, etc) on their facebook in the last month.

His B-day is in July so I can see a film of his annouced.

Out of these three, the only one I've watched was Twelve angry men. I am guessing these because of the hints they've been leaving here and there. But that's just a wild guess.

Now for the ones I really wish they announce:

Children of Paradise
The umbrellas of Cherbourg
Dogville
Happiness (to coincide with Life during wartime, when it does come out)
Beauty and the Beast
The Bride wore Black (and/or anything from Truffaut)
Persona
Brief encounter
The Passion of Joan of Arc (it would be nice to have a silent movie released)
Fanny and Alexander (my favorite Bergman, of the ones I've watched)
Nights of Cabiria

The list goes on and on, but these are the ones that just popped up.
Dogville! That would be a great release. It's probably my favorite Trier movie.

Gina Manès. It's a screenshot from Cœur fidèle, in the anticipation of Masters of Cinema Blu-ray release. Although I have not seen the film before.

Eyes Without a Face and Il Generale Della Rovere would be fantastic BD updates from Criterion. It would also be very special to see 12 Angry Men added to the collection considering the passing of S. Lumet this past week.

Every month has at least a few BD offerings from Criterion to get excited about.

How about 2 De Sica's in July?

Bicycle Thieves/Umberto D.

Just like P&P got Red Shoes/Black Narcissus last summer.

The Arrow release is a BD50 and I'm pretty sure the Fox Italy release is too.

Blubrew says the Italian is on a BD25.

The Arrow release(21gig) seems identical to the Italian (21gig) release. The Arrow does have almost 20gigs of extras which is nice. I think it would be a safe bet though that Criterion would be a 25-27 gig file and really open up the transfer. Typically the higher the bitrate the better the potential is for finer detail. This release, especially since its B&W would definetly benfit from that. Then again, it may not be announced tomorrow, making my argument moot....

I just read the description of the film. As I metioned over at the Eureka!/MoC thread, it sounds similar to von Sternberg's "The Docks of New York". It's a silent...that alone has me intrigued! Your picture of Gina Manes is the icing on the cake!

Default Broadcast News not available on Netflix or Blockbuster Online

Why is Broadcast News (Criterion Blu-ray) not available for rental on Netflix or Blockbuster Online?

Netflix is very bad about stocking Criterion Blu-rays, so I started a free trial with Blockbuster hoping that I'd be able to rent it from there -- but alas, unavailable.

What's going on with this?

I believe Criterion has a deal with Hulu for streaming of their titles now.

I'll be waiting for the Criterion myself (blubrew's comparison review). Not very likely I wouldn't have waited anyway.

Does anybody else feel that Criterion seriously skimps on the special features for some of their blu-rays? For example, Yi Yi looks to have a rather pathetic selection. Days of Heaven really dissapointed me as well. Shock Corridor had a great doc but nothing else really. There are more that I can't think of at the moment. Also, EVERY Criterion should have a commentary track. There are many that don't, and I think it is ridiculous.

Compare the special features on Modern Times and The Thin Red Line with that of Revanche, Shock Corridor, or Days of Heaven, for example. Huge difference, but still the same price. Yes, the film is the most important part, but with the Criterion prices, you'd expect them to all maintain a certain level of value. Anybody else feel where I'm coming from?

In those that I got, it wasn't to bad on special features but I don't get many of them. But I have notice that in many releases, not just for Criterion, the special features are becoming rather lame.
