I forgot about Ray. I have never seen any of his films, but love the history and culture of India. (as well as lush B&W photography) This is a no brainer. Thanks.

High and Low on Blu-ray = day 1 buy.

I'll probably get the Melville too.

Ray, Leigh, Cocteau, cool.

But cmon, more Kurosawa? There are other notable Japanese filmmakers that have no Blu releases yet when he has what, 5 now?

I'm just happy that the July 12th release date probably means Naked will be in the 50% off sale if it's in July. If not, it comes out literally a week before my birthday...

So you'll get Naked on your birthday?

Nice release month, enough to make everyone happy

I will get Beauty & the Beast for sure and High & Low (I can already hear some of you thinking, no surprise on the last one Pat)

Looks like the "Beauty And The Beast" booklets will be slightly different between blu-ray and DVD...

Quote:
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Geoffrey O’Brien (Blu-ray edition only), a piece on the film by Cocteau, excerpts from Francis Steegmuller’s 1970 book Cocteau: A Biography, a reprint of Mme. Leprince de Beaumont’s original fable (DVD edition only), and an introduction to Glass’s opera by the composer

I just found out that "Mona Lisa" and "Withnail and I" are OOP. I don't remember Criterion saying a word about them going OOP. Just thought I would give a heads up to those that are interested.

Watched "Le Cercle Rouge" Thursday. Enjoyed it a lot. Transfer is very strong. It reminded me of "Rififi" in a lot of ways. Got "White Material" to watch this weekend.

I recommend Leon Morin to those considering the blind buy.

It's a film concerned with faith and has some fascinating dynamics:

-Melville is an atheist
-Belmundo playing against type as a priest (he's fantastic)
-Emmanuelle Riva plays a militant communist who challenges Belmundo's beliefs and even makes advances on him.

The way Melville handles the subject matter is really cool. It's not heavy-handed religious but rather-- mature, open-minded and respectful of two point of views. Excellent film.

Gotta get a region free player Pat! I've got the 5 Ozu BDs that are already out and am waiting on 2 more coming out next month.

The one thing you give up is supplements, but you get 2 films per disc/release, which makes collecting them a lot cheaper.

Have I bugged you enough yet?

Exclamation I can no longer wait.....

heard "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane today, and made me want to watch The Game again so, so, so badly. More than words can express. This is probably the only Blu that I've completely dreamed of for months to be announced. Well, that and Indiana Jones Trilogy. I knew Criterion has had rumors allover about it, and my post is really irrelevant, but I had to show my affection somehow.

all handmade films are OOP because Image obtained the rights to the handmade catalog.
now, of course, Image distributes Criterion, but that doesn't affect rights issues.

I can vouch for that. It's actually one of my favorite Melville movies, even though it's quite "un-melvillian". The acting is superb.

I actually want 5 of the 6 releases this month -- I held off on buying Naked and High & Low (although I had the original version of H&L) on dvd and now my patience pays off. I will 100% buy The Music Room as well -- it's the only of the six that I have never seen, but having liked all of the other Ray I have seen, I have no doubt that I will enjoy it.

I'm really not sure what to make of this moth's releases. Only one I'm familiar with is Beauty and the Beast, though I havn't seen this version. Most of the releases sound interesting though.
