Naked, High & Low, and maybe Beauty and the Beast.

Naked is an absolutely brutal and depressing movie. The new cover is a little...off. I prefer the old boring one better. At least the old one hit the right tone.

Picked up Modern Times and Charade off Criterion's site. Modern Times was half price with the promo for Chaplin's birthday. Plus I had 10 dollars credit from a shipping mistake by Criterion so I got both films for around 41-42 dollars shipped. Not bad.

I'm surprised people seem to react like Beauty and the Beast is a weird choice. I would have that in the inevitable sooner or later column. Hmm.

I'm very excited about High and Low. It is the Kurosawa I have been really wanting. The only movie I know I won't get is Life During Wartime, which is disappointing since Happiness is one of my favorite movies. I rate Life During Wartime as the only one of Solendz's movies that is kind of dull in its failure. At least Palindromes swung for the fences.

This is probably the most pleasantly surprised I've been by a set of Criterion announcements in a while.

I don't want to be one of those negative douche bags, but some of the recent announcements have been for films I actively hate.
I saw Sweetie many years ago and really disliked it.
I saw Naked in the cinema and absolutely despised it.
I've never seen Life During Wartime, but I saw Happiness in the cinema and really disliked it. I can't see myself bothering with another Solondz film any time soon.
If there's demand for these films, then that's fine; I don't have to buy them. However, I have noticed no one has mentioned an intention to pick up Sweetie.
I am keen on High and Low. I never owned it on DVD, but I do love Kurosawa so I'll be picking that one up. I also never owned Beauty and the Beast, so I might add that to my cart.
I was actually really hoping to see Kubrick's The Killing, so I'm a little disappointed about that.

Judging by the caps, Le Cercle Rouge might be a strong transfer in terms of detail, but I don't think it is in terms of colour scheme - where are the steely blu tones usually present in Melville's films?

If Sonic Youth is featured on that 1991: Year Punk Broke thing, I'd have high interest. They're not my favorite band for nothing. The irrational part of my brain saw "Sonic Youth" and became very lustful for a Criterion blu-ray release of their Corporate Ghost music video collection.

Speaking of S.Y. and Criterion, I'd enjoy a blu-ray release of Made in U.S.A.

Pre-ordered them all via Amazon, in case a "sale" doesn't happen.

1991: The Year That Punk Broke is being released by We Got Power Films so no Criterion. If any movie needs "Punk" in the title, it should be with Patti Smith and Richard Hell in the 70's, not Sonic Youth and Nirvana (though I like them, so no hate). My 2 cents.

The StudioCanal transfer looks better than the Criterion in terms of color (kind of like Red Desert's BFI and Criterions, even though I own the Criterion one). Now where is the "hiding" smilie at for this forum?

hahaha. that's what I get for trusting Amazon on that... when I plugged in "sonic youth" under the movie section, the Godard film is the third item listed. Leap of logic--and I failed.

Your post was good, anyway. Thanks, Joe.
