The dance scene (and David Mansfield's score) were amazing.
Just be warned, however, that we get a LOT of dancing.

We get Kristofferson as a Harvard boy waltzing and waltzing. (After a long opening scene of running and running.)
We get Huppert as an immigrant skating and skating.
We get Kristofferson and Huppert waltzing on skates.
And many more scenes that trail on and on longer than they need to, because Cimino was legendarily in love with his own production design

(And we're not even in the "Dust-o-rama" action scenes yet.)

Fair enough; I probably wouldn't recommend something like Heaven's Gate as a blind-buy.
But if you get a chance to see the proper full-length version, you should.

YES. I love those 2 films. Great 1950's Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman cinematic melodramas.

I have a quick question about Antichrist. Is this a good movie or is it just an over the top gore fest? Is the gore really that over the top?

There really aren't many gory moments and by splatter standards those moments aren't particularly graphic or over the top but they are pretty visceral...they hit home.

As for whether it's a good movie...hard to say. It's very well made and I plan on watching it again at some point. That said, I still can't decide if there was more there than met the eye or less.

Hey Eightball, it's kinda/somewhat in the same realm as the film "Misery", if you've ever seen and liked that movie. It is NOT that type of gore as in your comment about an over the top gore fest. At least I did not think it was any type of cheesy gorefest at all.

No offence but I wouldn't say it was like MISERY. That was a Hollywood horror/ thriller movie, very good but quite linear and conventional. ANTICHRIST isn't really a horror movie or a thriller - it's a dark art-house movie about grief and guilt with some moments of transgressive violence. It's somewhere between Bergman and David Lynch, and if you don't like that general vibe, I'd be cautious about watching this.

I think it is a good movie, and quite interesting if you are a fan of his films in general. The overall themes fit very well with themes he has explored in other movies, and I think you can actually watch Antichrist as a commentary on the response to his other films, particularly criticism over his portrayal of gender.

I'd like to see Weekend. I almost picked up the DVD a while back, but I held off, and now the DVD is hard to find and expensive. It needs to be reissued on BD with a good transfer.

Regarding Antichrist, it's a visceral European art film with some horror elements and a lot of symbolism. It was very polarizing during its theatrical release. If you're the type of viewer that likes to interpret and analyze films, check it out. It's definitely not for everyone, though.

I was confused at first, as I thought people were somehow making things out from that tiny picture. Didn't see that you could click Download and get a higher-res version.

Out of curiosity, is there anything you don't like about the current release? Based on the review it seems to be a quality release.

No sorry I'm happy with the release, but I would like a booklet. And I've started to really enjoy the Criterion clear cases. Mostly just little cosmetic things like that. I cannot say that I am fond of some of the details on the cover either.

Honestly I didn't like it. I went into it with fairly high expectations after all the good things I heard about it, ended up being disappointed. Not a bad film though, can understand why some people like it.

I thought White Ribbon was the best film I saw in 2009. (new film that is) The B&W cinematography is absolutely beautiful. As far as the story, I really enjoy films that are open to an unlimited number of interpretations. (this is why Last Year at Marienbad is my favorite Criterion BD)

The Sony BD is very good indeed. I don't see this film getting the Criterion treatment.

I loved the cinematography as well. I'm not usually a fan of open interpretation endings, but it fit very well with the story imo. I can't see it getting a Criterion release, but I'd like one anyway. I'm going to get a copy ASAP. It's really cheap if you buy it used.

Glad you enjoyed it. I think it's going to be a classic. I know "classic" is thrown around too much these days but the film is terrific and will be discussed many years from now.

As for the BR disc. It's terrific. Outside of some roughing with the smoke in the fire scene it is as good as it gets on blu-ray.

Does anybody know if/when there will be a Barnes and Noble sale this year? Also, does Amazon have any Criterion deals now?
