Hopefully. I don't know who has the license to it, but there's no question it's a film Criterion would pick up. I was fortunate to have seen it in an old movie theater about six years ago, as part of my Heaven, Hell, and Judgment class with renowned professor Diane Christian.

Of course, I'd much rather see The Werckmeister Harmonies and The Return picked up first...

Well, love is blind sometimes. We really enjoyed this film, not everyone likes the same things.
Sometimes I think age and geographic location has something to do with the way we see certain films.

I finally watched Days of Heaven last night. Similar to how I felt about The Thin Red Line, I liked the story itself, but not all of Malick's decisions as the filmmaker. It felt like too many of the scenes were cut short and that he didn't give enough time for the heart of the story to develop.

In the end, though, I really liked the film. I can't really explain why, either. It just worked somehow. While I was able to pinpoint a few of the technical aspects of the creation of the film that I didn't like, I'm yet to exactly figure out what I liked.

I heard or read somewhere that Malick's films are more like poems then linear stories. And like many poems, for me, I can't quite figure out why Days of Heaven worked, I just know that it did.

Some of these ratings are hilarious.

I guess it just proves that one person's trash is another's treasure.

I'd be glad to elaborate on my ratings if there's something you want to discuss in particular.

How can some people see so many criterions but not 8 1/2. Its the highest rated criterion movie and the most popular...

That's a great way to put it, and for me applies to each Malick film I've seen: Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, and Tree of Life. Days of Heaven is certainly a shoulder above the other two (well, three shoulders and a head above Tree, which I didn't like that much), even with one of the most irritating voiceover narrations I've heard though.

I really do believe that Red should be watched last. Without spoiling anything, there are two crucial scenes in Red that are more powerful if the movies are watched in sequence.
I have to admit that I watched Red first because of Irene Jacob (I loved The Double Life of Veronique). I didn't feel I had missed anything until the very end (the brief cameos by actors I knew were in the other parts of the trilogy). I'll definitely get the box set whenever Criterion releases it.

I was tempted by the French import, but I'm positive Criterion will do a better job.

My response was not directed to your, or any one post specifically. I just find it amusing that some of my favorite films are rated no better (and even worse) then the crap playing currently in any friendly neighborhood multiplex.

I have slowing been catching up with my as yet unwatched Criterions, and have in the past week seen the following

Black Moon, Bottle Rocket, Hunger, Fat Girl, House, Close-Up, People On Sunday and Antichrist.

As someone who will watch anything, I am really impressed with the films Criterion release, so I may not have heard of some/most of them, but on average I love what I see, most recently People On Sunday. A wonderfull film with beautifull shots of Berlin pre-WW2, which I cannot wait to see again soon.

Really enjoying some of the ratings you guys are sharing too, makes for great discussion, although we all have different opinions on which films we like and those that we don't, I do think though that to truely appreciate film, it needs to be seen more than once All I have left to watch now is Smiles Of A Summer Night, Yi Yi, King Of Marvin Gardens, Beauty & The Beast. So what shall I watch tonight, any thoughts?

wow. didn't anticipate to see so many lists! and it's awesome to see so much varied in tastes.

there was one poster that i was agreeing with his scores (to varying degrees) about 75% of the time and then i saw he gave Last Year at Marienbad a 2/10, which i personally give a 4/5 or 4.5/5 to (it changes with every viewing it seems...). i don't agree, but i can certainly understand why many will hate it. which is weird, because even for some of my favorite movies i can still turn around and see why others would dislike it. and not just really obvious ones like Antichrist (which isn't a personal favorite but i do enjoy it immensely) where someone could / does dislike it because of the disturbing "we didn't need to see ALL that" scenes and other stuff, but films like Michael Clayton. many find it boring, i find it to be an absolute classic, but still can understand why people would find it boring, slow, dull and no reason to ever own it.

i however, watch it about once a month

really? i find this a bit surprising. i thought that honor would've gone to Seven Samurai or something easier to follow. i never looked at 8 1/2 or heard of it being highest rated or most popular. also, how do you know this? from their website or elsewhere?

learn something new every day, huh.

Well if we're talking about criterion's we don't like, out of their Blu-rays, I didn't like Black Narcissus, Cronos, Paris,Texas, Mystery Train, Ride with the Devil, Che, and The Man who fell to Earth. Everything else is awesome.
I felt the same away about the man who fell to earth, that's why I am trading it even though it is out of print. I figure use it to get some movies that I will watch more then once

I'd watch Smiles of a Summer Night, or The King Of Marvin Gardens. I have Yi Yi and I enjoyed it, but it's not one of my favorites.
