Tom and Jerry over He-man? That's a VERY good sign! Classic animation from the 1940s has it all over limited animated shows based on toys. Your kid has good taste. Introduce him to Looney Tunes, Tex Avery's MGM cartoons, Disney (shorts, as opposed to features), Lantz, and Fleischer cartoons, too.

I prefer Criterion release more classic and older titles, I care very little about many of the modern movies they release. That is not an absolute statement, but when browsing their catelogue I find myself about 85%/15% leaning towards titles released before about 1970. I understand that Criterion focuses on non-Hollywood/independent films, but I still prefer the older titles to the newer ones. However if a modern release was "mistreated" by the studio that took care of the blu-ray release, I would LOVE for Criterion to step in and correct all the ills. 12 Monkeys is a major one that comes to mind for me, I'm not sure if that one is possible for Criterion to obtain rights, but IMO a Criterion release is probably the best hope for that movie to get a proper treatment on blu-ray. The only other possibility is likely the fact that the 20th anniversary is coming up in 2015, I doubt Universal will care to bother improving it otherwise... Just finished seeing Army of Shadows and I must say this is definitely the best Criterion I have seen so far. The film is a masterpiece in every possible sense (Or at least I see it that way

![]() I like almost everything HB has done from the 1950s to present day. I'm also a fan of the classics from the 40s. The 1980s version of Tom and Jerry done by Filmation was pretty bad though, animation was horrible and the music became repetative within 3 minutes. Hanna Barbera's version from the mid-70s wasn't too bad. Army of Shadows is on my wishlist, I think I may watch it tonight to see if I'm going to grab it during the next sale, or when I'm down in New England area in the fall (it's a month before the sale, November's too risky as far as weather's concerned). Edit: Argh, why is that censored!? It's just a cartoon show/comic! Last edited by BohemianGraham; 08-02-2011 at 09:33 AM. |

I watched Yojimbo last night. Great film! Although I had never seen it, I kept thinking there was something very familiar about the plot. About a third of the way through I realized this is the movie both A Fist Full of Dollars and Last Man Standing are based on. I still love Leone's film, but I think I liked Yojimbo a bit more. I can't wait to watch Sanjuro some time this week.

Tried to watch High and Low last night, and it was way too late, and I had to stop it halfway through.
The merits of the film are fairly obvious, but I thought I'd point out that the transfer was very solid. It's obviously inferior to Pale Flower which I also viewed recently, but on it's own, I would never say it looks bad. |
