Branded to Kill is not the same kind of Japanese noir that Pale Flower is. I'd recommend watching it or part of it before purchase.
I haven't seen Tokyo Drifter for years, but recall that it wasn't as out there as Branded to Kill, but it is also a bit out there. Out there in a very strange and cool way.
I'll be getting both
Commiserations to those who won't be getting their Christmas wishes.
Definitely not as 'out there' as Hausu though...

So, with the price increase, I'm paying about $80 a month after taxes etc. for Netflix. I plan on canceling our plan out-right, and adding our two BD players to one of the "gift" accounts I am currently footing the bill for (and have been for 3 years)

Saves us $25 a month or so
Beta, I dumped the dvd part of netflix too and kept the streaming. They still have older CC releases and the kids shows are great. They also do not have new CC releases anymore, so I have kept my Blockbuster 3 online rentals for that. They just released a huge loss today this quarter. Maybe after the other streaming services get more established, netflix may have to sweeten the pot again.

I think a lot of people have gone this route Beta...I was paying for one disc out at a time with BD options and it was only costing me $12.95 a month. If I had kept the disc part of the plan, it would have gone up to about $18 a month. That is where I drew the line...I'll gladly keep the streaming for $7.99 a month, as there are still a lot of great films/TV shows to stream and my wife watches a lot of British TV shows/dramas as well.

As I was forced to buy a car recently, I decided to put the money toward a SiriusXM subscription...I travel about 90 minutes round trip every day for work and those bastards spoiled me with their 3 month trial. I'm also a big Opie and Anthony fan and haven't listened to them since they left "free" radio, due to format changes at their old home on NY FM radio.

The review for The Phantom Carriage is up over at the Beaver. Looks like it's interlaced like the People on Sunday disc. The end of the month can't come fast enough.

I jumped off the Netflix disc option as well. It was between paying about $18 for just Netflix or having Netflix and Hulu+ streaming for a dollar or two less, so that was a no-brainer. On top of everything I buy and get for reviewing, though, I barely have time for either as it is.

Of course if I had followed through on shorting or bought puts, it probably would have doubled to $600 instead of doing what has happened this quarter.

I actually am new customer of Netflix, but as a stock they were getting crazily overvalued. I'm not sure I would touch this stock now though, who knows which way it goes. I'm liking their streaming service though.

Woah WHAT!? This is the first I've heard of this! Why!?

EDIT: Nvm now that I've actually bothered to READ and see it's due to frame rate reasons all is well. xD

Anyone know what other Hitchcock films Criterion has rights too? In looking at their current library it appears the only other Hitchcock film not out of print is The 39 Steps. I hope there's more since other studios are not going a very good job in releasing Hitchcock films on Blu-Ray.

Yeah I learned my lesson with options. The first time I bought option contracts a few years back they lost 90% of their value in a week. I was aware of the risks though as far as the loss, but I was a complete idiot/newbie to buy 3 month contract just days before earnings. Of course it also just works out that Google chooses to report a terrible quarter the very month *I* buy some long option contracts. LOL. Now I usually just do covered calls, but if I want to "short" a stock I would buy puts rather than just outright shorting it (put is less risky because you know your maximum loss).

Anyway. back on topic.

I must own Lady Vanishes. I have to check out those Suzuki films, but I don't know if I'm going to want to blind buy them - they sound a little more "arty" and incomprehensible than the almost traditional noir that was Pale Flower. Maybe if I had shorted Netflix I would have had the money to just throw around

I work for a major securities custodial bank so I'm severely restricted on trading options and the like. Then again that's probably a good thing since it keeps me from the really risky stuff.

Hausu was awesome, and if these movies are even a fraction of the whackness that is Hausu, I'll blind buy them.

Reviewers should start including Units of Hausu(tm) along with their usual scores; where a movie's whackiness is measured using this term. 5 units for instance would indicate 5% of the whackiness that is Obayashi's unique gem.

Watched The Killing last night. Holy crap was that movie incredible! It was probably one of the "coolest" noirs I've ever seen. The characters were all really fun to watch onscreen, and the dialogue was pretty snappy.

I've never seen Kubrick like this. I'm used to plenty of Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, and Clockwork, but this was a pure gem, and a "suspected" surprise. I've heard so many good things about it since it was rumored. I had actually forgotten about the newsletter clue leadig up to the release, but when I saw that scene at the end....

Also, was in a Hitchcock mood last night after yesterday's announcements, so I dusted off my Universal Hitchcock Masterpiece boxset and watched The Man Who Knew Too Much (after debating between that and Shadow of a Doubt). We really need more Hitch on blu!!

Yeah, "The Killing" basically left me in awe having seen it for the first time on C Blu-Ray. It is such an extremely meticulously thought-out, played and directed piece. I was curious that some preferred "Killer's Kiss" to it, so I had tempered expectations(!); which of course is not a bad thing when watching a movie of this caliber.
