A bit more expensive than what I planned on, didn't think they would have 50% on upcoming titles. I would have bought them anyway and I would actually rather buy everything until the January pre-orders now than wait for 8 months for the next sale (except for anything that other retailers get to 50% between now and the next B&N sale).

So, the damage this time around:

Identification of a Woman
Dazed and Confused
Kuroneko
The Four Feathers
Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Harakiri
The Phantom Carriage
Carlos
Le beau Serge
Les Cousins
My Life as a Dog
3 Women
12 Angry Men
Rushmore
The Rules of the Game
Three Colors Trilogy
Fanny and Alexander
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
The Lady Vanishes
Design for Living
The Moment of Truth
Gojira
Belle de jour
Traffic

Luckily I found a coupon that gave 7% off on everything not a pre-order, that totalled $16.80 so I'll probably count "Identification of a Woman" (plus change) as free

Is this coupon something you can share perhaps? Or is it a 1-use thing?

I don't know what the rules is for posting coupons in this thread, but I'll give it a try.

Admins, if this is a no-no, please delete this post. Thank you in advance!

The code is: E7E4K8K

I have found it on various coupon sites when searching for "Barnes and Noble coupon" so I don't think it is a one-off coupon.

Interesting jcs913 and Cinemach. I'm curious though which HD-DVD you're referring to...the UK version from Optimum or the French one by Studio Canal? I have the latter, and my experience with that disc was pretty darn sweet, although admittedly I was more impressed by the lossless audio than its very good but not reference quality video. As for pitch problems? None that I noticed; of course I'm no expert, just a movie fan. But if it was as blatant and pervasive as Cinemach claims, I'm sure I would have heard an earful from the perfect pitch musician I watched it with. I mean, dude's always no-holds-barred about such issues. At times, brutally so. Narry a peep out of him.

So each to his own I guess. In any case, it's all academic and sidebar to this Criterion discussion - the consensus of opinion being "they aint gettin' it any time soon". The vehemance of your criticisms were just a bit startling is all...they simply didn't jibe with my experience watching the French Studio Canal disc on a virtually new full 1080p HD-DVD deck. Truth be told, I'd rather own and watch Mulholland Drive on Blu, and will probably end up springing for the German box (no region-free player yet, so the UK Region B release is a non starter for me, although you do make it sound enticing). Despite my reservations about the double-dip, I think I'm more frustrated by the fact that none of the existing Blu's offer what the cine-geek in me r-e-a-l-l-y wants...the ability to view this film along with its original unaired TV pilot to better understand the creative process Lynch went through in deconstructing it into such a great film.

Hate to do this to you, but B3P8E4D will get you 10% off if you're NOT a member. Also, ebates is offering 8% cash back today at B&N. I just did the following damage:

Kuroneko
Dazed and Confused
The Wages of Fear
The Four Feathers
Amarcord
Island of Lost Souls
The Magician

Use this code instead : B3P8E4D

It is exactly the same as E7E4K8K except it is 10% and not 7%.

Any chance someone here has attempted to come up with a rough listing of the films a number of people, the readers of this thread for example, consider the ones most worth seeking out?

Short of ranking them via some thing like IMDb ratings or their ranking on They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?, I was hoping for some type of primer on titles most worth narrowing down ones focus for potential blind buys.

I'd say it's probably too much down to personal choice to have such a list of 'best' films to buy. The Criterion Collection doesn't have a lot of bad movies in my opinion, so you're not really going to go wrong.

That being said, if I were to create a very short list of older essentials for someone I would probably pick:

The 400 Blows

Play Time
The Seventh Seal
Seven Samurai

This totally threw off my plans. I did not expect the pre-orders outside the sale date to be 50% as well.

BohemianGraham and tenia (I would guess that you like "Irréversible" ) thank you for the information. I don't think I will be cancelling my order just to order with the 10% rebate. It will ultimately give me $7.20 more rebate and considering the whole thing was $540.19 I'll probably learn to live with it...

But good news for those that hasn't ordered yet!

That's why I said I hated to post that. I almost went with the 7% myself, until I read the expiry date on the 10% one. It's good until the 9th.

Yojimbo/Sanjuro
The BBS Box Set
Black Narcissus
Diabolique
Night of the Hunter
The Leopard
The Seventh Seal
Seven Samurai

Those are some to look at.

Ditto. I need to get new rocker panels and shocks for my car, as I have a MVI coming up in January. I'm not taking advantage of it. Not cancelling my 12 Angry Men pre-order, Army of Shadows order from Amazon either, because it's going to come within a week from amazon. B&N, it will take a month.

For those who are looking to blind-buy some titles, we got a Criterion poll going on at the Movies forum. If we could get enough members to participate, it could be a pretty good guide for watching or purchasing some Criterion releases.

I'm accustomed to waiting anyway
I just doubtful the Dec/Jan titles (and 12 Angry Men/Rushmore) will hold the $19.99 price. I presume it's an error and it should only have covered titles releasing up to the 22nd, so I'd say it's likely any pre-orders after that date will be cancelled.
Still, if you're not in you can't win!!

Now I remember why I hated BN, they reserve the entire amount at once and it's impossible to cancel items from the order page even if they're not scheduled to ship for weeks.

There are a bunch of pre-orders I'm interested in but not certain of, not sure I should risk ordering them in case I change my mind. Any international people ever been successful in canceling parts of an order with their customer service?

I can't even find Three Colors Trilogy bd online.
anyone got a link?
I've gone through all the sale titles and it's not showing up.
(at least not under blu-ray A-Z--says there are 109 titles)
EDIT: nevermind-- found it through search without the word "trilogy"
it's definitely hidden.

Arkadian...search under Krzysztof Kieslowski...I'd post a link but B&N links don't work too well.
