Which do you guys think is better. Carlos or Che? Can't decide between those two. Also, does the Carlos blu ray only have the 5 hour cut?

I made (2) separate transactions for "Island" and the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set. Both deducted the $8 after being scanned in the "proper order" and there was no need for the cashier to "override" the transaction, for the coup to work.

I'm pleasantly confused about this!?
Weird. I also bought Island of Lost Souls and the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set at the same time using two separate transactions, though I used a 20% on Island and the 8/40 on the Eclipse set. Could we be.....telepathically linked and not know it?? *twilight zone music*.

I havent seen Carlos so I can't comment on it. However, the Che set is fantastic the movie itself is very watchable despite it totaling 4 hours. Supplements are ok, commentary with the author of the book but not Soderbergh or Del Toro.

I didn't like Che. It felt impersonal, flat and distant, in both content and visuals, and I thought it was rather boring.

I ordered Carlos during the sale now, but is it similar to Che? Or would it be closer to something like Mesrine, which, though no masterpiece, I enjoyed a heck of a lot more than Che.

I half agree. I thought Che was very impressive visually and stylistically but impersonal is the perfect word to describe the content. It's one thing to maintain a neutral distance but I really didn't connect to or care about any of the characters or events I was watching.

I'm not sure I would say it was boring, though. I didn't feel like I like I learned anything from the film but from start to finish I really wanted to so in that sense at least it did do a pretty good job of holding my interest.

Carlos is kind of the best of both.

Like Che, Carlos takes itself very seriously - in the good 'gravitas' sort of way. I never got the feeling Carlos was a fictional or overly dramatized character. He always came across as an historical figure (and that definitely wasn't the case with Mesrine).

Like Mesrine, the characters, events and storytelling methods are very engaging and very interesting. There's far less action but Carlos is no less riveting...in fact, I thought it was quite a bit more interesting overall and at times even more suspenseful (though definitely in its own way).

And like Vincent Cassel, Edgar Ramirez flat out owns every scene he's in. That's not a knock on Bdt...he was very good in Che but Ramirez was just overpowering.

My friend got Kicking and Screaming on Criterion yesterday and I couldn't stop laughing because the whole time I seriously thought he was talking about the Will Ferrell movie. I was about to question Criterion until he corrected me.

It's essentially a comedy as well, although a dark one.

Various other topics such as illusion, reality, the facade of appearances, and class structure are examined as well.

I have to also mention that The Magician is one of the most beautiful B&W film I have ever seen.

It's still a great film, I just don't rank it up there with his masterpieces, nor do I feel that it's one of his more "important" films.

I mean, it's basically Von Sydow playing Bergman, and Bjornstrand playing film critic Harry Schein. That in itself carries a comical undertone that makes it more of a fun film, than a serious meditation into the psyche.
You two are going to give me a complex before I watch the freaking film.

There was quite a bit of discussion about Carlos's package a few pages back.

Re: Seven Samurai and The Rules of the Game--You're talking about two of the consensus top-ten movies ever made. Seriously. Please find a way to buy them both.

And for those who think Smiles of a Summer Night is frivolous fluff or Bergman Lite, you have missed some of the sadder, more subtle nuances of the characters and their relationships. This is a complex film that delves into human nature and our follies and foibles in ways that are not apparent on the surface (which is why I adore it). One of Bergman's very best.

It's funny, I've only (mis)seen it once but it was only when I learned through the supplements of the artist/critic/public subtexts that I started thinking there was more 'there' there than I'd originally thought. What seemed like a fairly stodgy, heavy-handed faith/science showdown became quite a bit more interesting.

The roles, responsibilities and interactions of artist, critic and public seem like fairly good fodder for real discussion (along with the inside jokes and sideways sniping).

I doubt I'll revisit it anytime soon but I'll get back to it sooner or later.

+1 about Mesrine. Definitely enjoyed that better than Che as well, and it is probably Vincent Kassel's best performance so far. Should be in the collection to supplement those two, IMO. Then again, all of my favorite films should be in there, _period_.

LOL...that would probably scare my wife, if she knew that I had an "evil twin" out there.

Island was the only recent BD that I knew I wanted to buy and I've looked at the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set for the past two B & N sales. I think Pale Flower and Branded to Kill got me interested in the Japanese noir.

All jokes aside, the full nudity works really well thematically.
I've now sold my UK edition, so I'm looking forward to picking up the Criterion edition in the November sale.

I'd imagine RED RIVER should be announced soon. A while back they said 2012 for its release.
