Only if you don't seriously know what your letting yourself in for...
![]() ![]() (No matter what you might think of blind-buying...NEVER do it with Criterion. That's why they put those little previews up instead, and if you look at one, you will see why. In fact, from said previews, I'd gather they would rather you know why you're buying it.) Last edited by EricJ; 11-08-2011 at 05:21 AM. |

Yeah, me too. I've never hesitated blind buying anything from Criterion. While there are certainly ones I've liked more than others, I've never regreted buying any of them. |

11.5/54 films in my collection were NOT blind buys. The .5 is for Gojira, as I've watch G:KOTM several times, but never Gojira. I like blind buying Criterions, and usually make sure I do a lot of research before I commit to buying one.

BTW- DVD Beaver needs a name change. I know they have blubeaver.ca but all their review links point back to DVD Beaver. Seems silly a site with so many HD reviews is called DVD Beaver. ![]() |

I agree with kndy. The theatrical cut almost seems forced at times by Bergman. Almost like he felt incomplete in his story and added to the story that frankly didn't need addition. There are redundancies in the longer cut and pieces that I don't believe people needed spelled out for them so extensively. Just my opinion, but save your self the 2 extra hours on your first viewing with the tv version, as you will enjoy it much more than the theatrical.

Count me as one who pretty much blind buys all of his Criterion films. For example, I picked up Island of Lost Souls over the weekend, and I have to admit, I was impressed. Very impressed. The film had a creepy feel to it, in large part to Charles Laughton. To me, his "feminine" persona was more about being a more subtle, understated doctor instead of a loon you might expect.
With that said, however, I do wonder about his desire to mate The Leopard Woman (who is absolutely stunning, by the way) with someone other than himself or Montgomery. The fact that he's unwilling to force himself on her adds a sense of, I don't know, romanticism to his character. Makes him less of an animal, perhaps. At the same time, though, upon reflection, it does make you wonder about his sexuality (at least, for a member of a modern audience...perhaps in 1932 that wasn't an issue). I was also surprised at the great the costumes and make-up. I was expecting little more than men with dark make-up and pieces of a monkey suit, but what you get is much, much more than that. Another great Criterion blind buy! |
