Some folks on CF really catch feelings when they don't agree with the reviewer's take on Rushmore.

This is usually the case In order to maintain the proper speed of silent films with a original framerate below 24 fps on a technology that displays a image in multiples of 60hz. That's the basic answer. A search on the net should get you a wealth of info. Should also lead you to the conclusion that if you love Blu-ray make sure your TV has the ability to refresh in multiples of 24hz(48hz, 72 etc). Much more fluid picture then the standard method of 3:2 pulldown inserting duplicate frames to match a refresh rate designed for 30fps. Sometimes your TV will have this option and it just needs to be enabled.

Sorry for going off topic.

- The Complete Jean Vigo
- Che
- Hunger
- Leon Morin, Priest

Also, Diabolique with a "fine" bottle of wine .

I picked up:
Salo
The Phantom Carriage
The Night of the Hunter
Island of Lost Souls
and Cul-de-Sac.

They were all blind buys (and yes i'm aware of all their content, especially Salo). Which one do you guys think I should watch first?

There were a bunch of Criterions at our local Best Buy. I don't know why but there were more than the usual 3 or 4. There were like 6 different new Criterion Blu's and 3 or 4 copies of each.

And thanks for the responses to my 'The Phantom Carriage' question.

Island of Lost Souls, bloody entertaining. Probably the first Criterion with Bela Lugosi?
I love the Criterion package for Night of The Hunter, but demurred from a purchase because the film itself is kinda meh for me. Mitchum has presence to be sure but he plays the character so broad it jars, like he had a flashing neon signal that said "murderous psychopath here". Just my 2 bits.
The Phantom Carriage is a great looking film and one can definitely see the sort of influence it would have had on Bergman, but not one I can re-watch so no buy (I want to keep my BD collection small but very rewatchable ).
Have yet to see Cul de Sac, sounds promising.

Wow! That's great news Spidey! Where did you hear about this and besides "The American Friend", which of his other films are purported to be in this set?

CriterionForum had a user(s) (more than one actually did) post a link to an interview which Wenders said it will come next year with a set of his films. Likely to be The Road Trilogy and prob The American Friend as a stand-alone release. Or they can put the Road Trilogy together with The American Friend and put out some "Films of Wenders" set. We shall see.

Though you might not agree with his own perspectives and views of films/directors, Spidey's information about future releases is usually pretty accurate.
