MGM's Ninotcka would make sense....

I don't think it's listed among the off limit films in the MGM-Criterion deal.

[Show spoiler][I realize the last new spine of 2011 to come out will be DESIGN FOR LIVING but we may as well get the ball rolling now]

But don't go suggesting that we are censoring traffic here when in reality we have one of the most liberal linking policies of any major site.

My apologies to both CC fixx and Pro-B. My original post was made after reading members here state that linking to other review sites was not allowed. (I am glad to hear that is not the case)

PS
I just returned form viewing Lars Von Trier's new film Melancholia. (Midtown Cinema Harrisburg, PA) The film was beautiful to look at, and had fine performances, but I was left feeling indifferent afterwards. I would not be in line for a Criterion version of this film.

I just watched the "Krzysztof Kieslowski: I'm So-So..." extra on Three Colors: Red. Probably one of my favorite extras of any film so far. I really like the way Kieslowski thinks. Very entertaining to listen to.

Absolutely by spine number. There's no other way to do it...or so I thought.

And thanks for the props guys. I've been collecting them since 2005. At first it was a few here, a few there, but since I adopted blu-ray AND discovered the B&N sales, I just started buying in bulk.

Best: Tie between The Three Colours and 12 Angry Men, but since I believe MGM could have easily released the latter themselves, I went with the former.

What were they thinking: Something Wild.

It's one of those $29.99 titles so it's standard pricing.

Based on early numbers it may be hard for anything to top Life During Wartime for 'What were they thinking'...

Best- I was torn between The Music Room and Blow Out, but voted for the former because the music floored me.

Worst- I went with Fish Tank, although I wasn't necessarily happy picking it because I really enjoyed the ending. There were probably worse, but I haven't exposed myself to them yet. ha.

Okay retablo, at least there's a connection*. That's all I needed to hear to recant.

* which I missed because I've only seen Bleu so far.

That is so interesting, because 'Melancholia' is, by far, my favorite film of his. His other works I sometimes enjoy, but have never loved. Criterion-wise, I thought 'Antichrist' was ok, and haven't bought it yet...but 'Melancholia' I'd buy in an instant if they released it. The ending left me pretty speechless, and I found myself relating a great deal to the entire mood of the film as a whole (was really fascinated about the accepting death/not accepting death struggle)....and of course, those performances were phenomenal.

Best: Island of Lost Souls - not because it is my favorite new release, although I liked it a lot - but because of the restoration work that went into this film. Runners up for the same reason: The Music Room and The Complete Jean Vigo.

What Were They Thinking: easy choice - Life During Wartime.

Wow, a lot of dislike for 'Life During Wartime', huh? I haven't seen it and now I'm not as anxious to as I was before. For best, I was a bit stuck, but I went for 'Sweet Smell of Success'. For the 'what were they thinking'....Out of the ones I've seen, I went with 'Insignificance'. I could see why the film would be included in the collection, but still...I was massively dissapointed.

Life During Wartime would have made more sense if it had been paired with Happiness. Without this companion piece, it's as if Criterion had released Red and not Blue or White.

Best: 12 angry men, I have liked this movie since I was in high school and was really happy to see it join the collection.

What were they thinking: The times of Harvey Milk. I may get flamed a bit for this but I felt this documentary was the REAL version of the film Milk. Similar in both tone and feel IMO. In fact, I felt that Milk was almost a remake of the documentary.

I liked the documentary version more than I liked the movie, but with the movies immense popularity, I feel that The Times of Harvey Milk could have EASILY been put out by another studio that was looking to cash in on the popularity of Milk. Criterion didn't really need to put this one in the collection.

Just my opinion...

It worse than Happiness, though?...because Happiness was alright to me. Although I see how it's an odd choice to just release Wartime by itself.

Best : Kieslowski boxset, clearly.
WWTT : the Solondz. If they wanted to include the director in the collection, I would have preferred them to do it with a movie that needs a good edition, like Happiness or Welcome to the Dollhouse. I'm always disappointed when I look at a Criterion release that could have easily been done by an other studio (like most of the IFC deal's releases).

From pictures people have posted, the Three Colors Trilogy looks like an amazing box. The outer case seems Alien Anthology-ish - is it?
