That said, Tokyo Drifter (being color) has to the most to gain from the upgrade to blu (colors and resolution). Both the original Criterions were non-Anamorphic, sourced from their not-so-hot LD masters. Maybe 720x256 with awful early-generation mpeg-2 (Japanese anamorphic DVDs are miles better). The new blu comes several years into their HD run, and with AVC @ 1920x720ish to boot. Best upgrade for sure.
Agreed...I'm just waiting for the price to drop below $35, until I consider ordering it from Amazon...

Was wondering if you received all of your movies from the sale? I like the sale but I swear B&N shipping as got to be the slowest in history when it come's to sending stuff to Montreal
Whoops, my bad!

I have 3 out of the 9 I ordered. Mom tells me that The Four Feathers, The Wages of Fear, and Kuroneko, which shipped on the 2nd, arrived yesterday. I'm still waiting on Dazed and Confused, which also shipped on the 2nd, as well as Island of Lost Souls, The Magician, and Amarcord, which shipped on the 3rd, and finally Stagecoach and Kiss Me Deadly, which shipped on the 13th. My Amazon.com order of 12 Angry Men & Army of Shadows has been sitting in Halifax since Sunday, and has yet to move out of the depot. Canada Post is claiming that it will take until tomorrow or Thursday for it to travel 60KM from Halifax to my parents' mailbox.

Edit: The Amazon parcel is out for delivery as of 8:30 this morning. I forgot how unreliable CP's tracking system is, and how they never update it on time.

I like everything I've seen of Wes Anderson's work, but I really love Life Aquatic and Mr. Fox.

I'll see Hugo just because Scorsese is involved.
Those are the only two Anderson films I've enjoyed, the others were m'eh. I refuse to see Twilight. I want to see The Muppets, but probably won't get the chance to see it in theatres. I'll be watching Hugo in theatres though, although it's going to have to wait a bit until work and social obligations settle down some.

Apparently my tastes in film are garbage because I hate Forrest Gump, and though Inception was only about a 7/10.
What I find disappointing is that playground mentality that if you don't like something that makes you better or tougher than someone who does like something. After that it is just posturing.

I don't care if anyone likes WA or Kurosawa movies or if they eat their broccoli or roll through stop signs. What irks me if when a new person pops in to share their enthusiasm about something and are shouted down and bullied for no constructive reason. That has happened a lot in this thread.

I hate Shawshank, for what it is worth.

But once again, what does it matter? Are we so insecure in our own self worth that we now become depress because some nameless person on the Internet is making fun of movies we like? Some like to be sarcastic, other like to make themselves bigger by trying to make others smaller, who care's? Mostly people in here are far from being snobs like it's so popular to think in the rest of the forum. In fact I find much more snobs and hostility in threads like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Indy, Twillight, Transformers.....where the nasty stuff goes beyond playground attitude. I find most people in here are pretty nice and respect most people, just ignore the bad apples.

I don't think anyone is being bullied, it's nothing more than a contrary opinion. Frankly, if someone feels bullied by a bunch of words on a screen by a complete stranger, they have other issues at hand. Isn't a difference of opinion the backbone of a discussion...

Buy the time July rolls around I think I'll have enough Amazon points to buy 12 Angry Men for basically nothing.

Amazon is currently selling it for $27.99. I currently have 1,021 points so I would need 1,778 more points to get it for nothing.

July is 7 months away. Let's say I spend on average $250 on month on my Amazon Credit Card. To make the math easy let's say I can only earn one point for every dollar spent.

So that's 1,750 points I'll most likely earn from now until July. Of course the price could drop too.

Patience, patience, patience.

I guess if Barnes & Noble has a 40% off all Blu-ray sale and I am able to stack the ubiquitous $8 off $40 coupon I could have it for $14.44 after tax. Or Barnes & Noble has a "Buy 2, Get 1" free promotion with some great coupons.

Or I find a good price for it used.

I find this thread to be rather civl, with the excpetion of a few comments a couple weeks ago, compared to the majority of this forum. Half the time I don't feel like posting outside of this thread because you have some anonymous person acting like a deranged, childish lunatic, because they are anonymous, and therefore think they can act like an beligerant, trollish, jerk on an internet forum. Sometimes the obvious trolls on Fark.com behave better and show more respect than some of the posters in other threads show to people on here. This thread has snarky remarks, but they're usually made in good fun.

This. As I said before, this thread is a cakewalk compared to a lot of the other threads on this forum. Avoid the freaking sales threads, it's like you've murdered someone's mother, deficated on her corpse, and fed it to them, if you don't agree with what goes on there, and then they start stalking you around the board. Also, apparently if you buy something without doing your research, and get a BD that has FRENCH on the cover, it's a crime against humanity, and the end of the world. You need "to get the hell off the board" because you're an "immature jackass" for saying it's not a big deal. Don't even try to ask about a LCD/LED TV in that section of the board, because you're stupid and need to get a Plasma! Also, slipcovers are more important than slurs directed at people for disagreeing with someone. I could go on and on and on with examples. I'm snarky in here occasionally, but I'm not trying to levy personal attacks against anyone. A lot of people seem to think otherwise I guess.

Question about the Salo blu ray. I own the DVD copy and want to upgrade. But I was curious if the booklet includes everything the DVD version did. It was 80 pages, so if they scale the size of the book down to fit the blu ray sized case, it has to be even thicker. If they omitted pictures and/or essays then I might keep the DVD version.

As far as I can see, it is the same booklet.

Earn points on all of your purchases

3 points on Amazon.com
2 points on eligible gas, dining, drugstore and office supply stores
1 point everywhere else

Sometimes they have periods where they double the points if you buy something from Amazon between this date and that date. I received 800 points for going paperless (for my credit card statements).

If you're responsible and pay your bills in full every month, why not get rewarded for it? It adds up.

I am thinking about getting another card for travel purposes. I've had a credit card since I was 17 and never regretted it one bit.

Wow, that's 7,500 points or a $75 gift card you could have received had you spent that with an Amazon Visa.

Regarding the atmosphere in this thread, I find it to be friendly/inviting enough.

We are all here discussing our love, or dislike of various films. Most of them being from the Criterion Collection.

There is such a wide variety of film types in the collection, and film viewers on this site, that there is certain to be disagreements on what are the "best" and "worst" films in the collection.

We all have different tastes, and that's ok. As long as we don't resort to personal attacks, or become rude, mean, or vulgar, we can enjoy the debate of the merits and deficiencies of the topic du jour.

One thing I have noticed while lurking around on this forum, is that some members are seemingly never happy with any release. If they like the movie, then it's an issue with the video PQ. If the PQ is ok, then it should have had a 7.1 mix. If those are in place, the packaging sucks, or the price isn't where they want it, etc. etc

Heck, there is a massive thread forming regarding the original Fright Night release, due to the way it is being distributed and priced. People there are fighting over age groups vs. the "informed" members of this site vs. the "entitled" vs. the people who are willing to pay the asking price vs. those who refuse to buy just because it can't be bought at Wal-Mart & Best Buy vs...well you get the idea.

I begin to wonder sometimes if these groups of people are ever really happy with any BD release. There are those who will always find something to complain about. That is unavoidable.

Honestly, I sometimes think that some people pretend to hate a release/film just to satisfy some internet alter ego they have created for themselves. I am not saying in this thread, but around the internet, and in forums in general.

IMO this thread is far, far more civilized than the types of behavior I have noticed on other sections of this site and other forums I have been on.

Heck, I admitted to liking both a Wes Anderson film (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Armageddon. Not one person "attacked" me in any way.

I don't feel that this thread is filled with "film snobs", it's just people who are (generally) more passionate about their feelings on film than the usual consumer. IMO, that is a good thing, it keeps us from arguing about how how much a BD should cost.

Glad to know I am not the only one to have notice this. It's funny as you can prety much see them, from thread to thread always saying how each release is crap, you just start to notice them over time and it's always pretty much the same people.
