Thumbs up Paris, Texas.

Someone started a greatest living directors thread, and listed Wim Wenders as one of their favorite directors. I started to think about how much I loved Paris, Texas. It's one of my favorite Criterions in my collection. My mother taught a Ph.D level psychology class, and she would show certain films and have her students diagnose the characters. She showed Paris, Texas every semester that she taught the class. I'd recommend it to anyone who has not seen it yet.

Criterion should really release Les Amities Particulieres sometime down the road. It's out of print, it's a great movie, and is getting more and more well known every day. I'm sure they wouldn't have problems with the subject matter... I mean, it's controversial, but it's not Salo or anything.

Anyone else seen the movie?

Although I greatly appreciate your opinions on these films, I have to disagree a little bit with you on some of these. I think Black Swan was 2010's masterpiece, a wonderfully executed psychothriller, with perfect performances and impeccable direction. King's Speech was very nice, it was a beautifully shot film that was also perfectly acted and directed impeccably; but it felt a bit stale and bland... just a little bit.

I haven't seen the kids are all right or toy story, but the others I would rate

127 Hours 8/10; Black Swan 10/10; The Fighter 6/10 (mostly for bale's performance); Inception 8/10 (beautiful SFX, cinematography and the story intrigued me, although i thought it could have been better executed); King's Speech 8.5/10; Social Network 4/10; True Grit - 8/10; Winter's Bone - 8/10

Then my other gems of 2010 are: Shutter Island 9/10, Scott Pilgrim 10/10, The Town 8/10, Animal Kingdom 8/10 and Incendies 9/10

Both 1.77:1 & 1.78:1 aspect ratios should fill up your entire 16:9 television screen since 16 divided by 9 equals 1.7777777.

A 1.75:1 ratio should yield very thin black bars along the top and bottom of the image.
1.75 gives you very thin bars on the sides. (1.77 fills the frame, less leaves pillar bars (1.19,1.33,1.66, 1.75), more leaves letterboxes (1.85,2.00 2.20,2.35,2.55) )

The blu-ray of The Manchurian Candidate is presented in 1.75 to 1.

You're correct. I mistook my 1.75:1 as 1.85:1, which is what I should've said, so thanks for pointing that out.

Black Swan just didn't appeal to me, and I thought it was a bit overrated. I felt a lot of it was just thrown in for shock value
[Show spoiler]such as the lesbian sex scene
, and I just couldn't connect with the film. But then, I haven't really enjoyed any Aronofsky films I've watched.

Also, the Red Shoes did it much better 70 years earlier.

Good lord, none of this matters. I'm saying people can say what they want and they can like what they want. But the only thing that bothers me about the thread is seeing someone show up and be chased off the playground. Because that is childish behavior, and hardly a right worth defending.

But it is safe to say that the subtext of every post in this thread is: "I am great."

So far The Social Network has an average score of 3.5/10! I thought it was the clear best of the year, and may end up being one of my favorite movies ever. I didn't know there was such strong dislike for it out there.

In defense of "The Social Network": I thought it was a magnificent film with verbal acrobatics with delivery full of wit that gives justice to the writing. Opening scene itself is great, and is sustained throughout the film.

Back to Criterion: Just re-watched Blue after not seeing it for 5 years. My goodness, how that film changed for me... I thought it was beautiful, tragic, wonderful and uncanny on how it's a little but prophetic about the Euro's current financial situation. The black-outs in the film, something that I thought was pretentious then, now I think brilliantly captures moments of relapse from someone getting over grief (or maybe even heartbreak).

I'm seriously interested in the Sabu Eclipse series. Any other Eclipse series sets worth checking out?

Well, it has that great Billy Wilder/I.A.L. Diamond pedigree BohemianGraham, and it fits with Criterion's recent interest in MGM/UA catalogue titles. I would certainly pay to see that movie again.

But somehow, I think if Criterion really wanted to do a Wilder comedy, they would go after The Apartment or Some Like It Hot first.

Not strictly Criterion related, but does anyone have any insight on how the transfers for the recently announced Rebecca, Notorious, Manhattan, and Annie Hall blus from MGM might be? Or just predictions?

I was impressed with the Psycho transfer, but that was Universal. I haven't seen a single Woody Allen movie, or either of those Hitchcocks, but I'm highly interested in all of these.

I just calculated my movie purchases beginning at the OOP Criterion DVD Amazon sale through the Black Friday week sales and want to throw up a little. I should add up their MSRPs to make myself feel better I guess.

I disagree. Some Like it Hot already has a halfways decent release, and The Apartment's coming out in January. They're also way too prominent, and "obvious," in addition to Sunset Boulevard and Witness for the Prosecution.

I'd prefer to see them get One, Two, Three, and/or The Fortune Cookie, and upgrade Ace in the Hole. One, Two, Three is more of Criterion's style than Some Like it Hot and The Apartment, especially with the biting political satire and farce.

I loved both Black Swan and The Social Network; the latter surprised me about how much I liked it as I was really just looking for a bunch of guys sitting around computers. The backstory as read could've been very boring, and what Fincher achieved in finding the movie within and establishing a noirish visual dialogue should've netted him the Best Director Oscar.

But Black Swan is still tops on this decade for me. Drive came close, but I still like Swan just a bit more - it's such an astute study on the pursuit of perfection and the artistic/creative process. And in my opinion, Black Swan>The Red Shoes. <--I come in peace [smiley face]

Black Swan 10/10, The Social Network 9/10.

Six months ago I would have said (and probably did say) there's no chance in hell of them getting things like The Apartment but now I'm not so sure. I hope an MGM release does materialize this time around (I refuse to get my hopes up this time) but if it doesn't I don't think we can rule this completely out.

I do agree that something like The Fortune Cookie is a better fit, though. I'd love to see that down the road.
