Maybe I'm surprised Battle of Algiers didn't get more love. I think it's one of the best packages Criterion has ever released.
Thanks for organising all the polls - good fun
I'm also surprised about Battle of Algiers - even other masterpieces bow down before this amazing film. On top of that, the packaging and artwork are great.

That's really a tough one to answer.
There are so many brilliant flicks in the collection...

I'd say mine are:

Army of Shadows
Diabolique
Seven Samurai
The Killing
The Red Shoes
The Seventh Seal
The Night of the Hunter
Last Year at Marienbad
M
Paths of Glory

(haven't seen 12 Angry Men, Fanny and Alexander and Three Colors though...)

and push comes to shove, I bet "Bigger than Life" would knock a couple off my list too.
De gustibus non est disputandum, but Night of the Hunter is seriously quiet an overhyped POS in every regard. One of the top Criterion disappointments for me, maybe right there with Blow Out, another piece of film-making garbage.

I would agree that no one should dispute anyone's taste in films...but I still find it a bit hard to believe that you find NOTH to be such a piece of crap. The performances by Mithcum and Gish alone are noteworthy.

There's also a lot I need to catch up on/buy still.
Woah, you didn't like The Silence of the Lambs, Mystery Train, Bicycle Thieves, and Solaris? I'm very surprised. Lambs is one of the best mainstream films ever in my opinion. Mystery Train is perfectly dreary. Thieves is classic storytelling at its best. And Solaris is enthralling. But to each his or her own! Variety is the spice of life.

hey guys, I'm new to the CC, but as this is the "Criterion Collection Discussion", I thought I'd ask which ones I should buy first... Any opinions? I just started my new addiction with Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and Darjeeling Limited.

Based on your affinity for English-language films, (what I gathered from your first 2 picks) I'd say you can't go wrong with films like:

Bigger Than Life
Charade
Paths of Glory
Night of the Hunter
12 Angry Men

Actually I'm fine with most foreign language films, and I have Paths of Glory and 12 Angry Men on my list to buy next. Haven't seen the other 3 but will probably check out Charade as it sounds like my kinda film.

But if you aren't familiar with the other Criterion titles, you picked a good time to hop on the forum. Go through the last few pages of this thread. Many of us recently voted on the best (and worst) of Criterion for 2011 -- you will find the results within the past few pages. Also, people have been posting their
own Criterion "top 10" lists. That should give you some titles to check out.
That's a pretty good idea and I am doing it now haha

If that is the case, you definitely should check out films like Army of Shadows and Le Cercle rouge, or High and Low for starters...that is, if you have not yet seen these.

I'm sure I am missing some that would be top 10 for me, but off the top of my head in no particular order:

Grand Illusion
Andrei Rublev
The Wages of Fear
Brazil
The Seventh Seal
Ivan The Terrible (counting I and II as one)
Army of Shadows
Under the Volcano
Hunger
Kiss Me Deadly

A bunch of filmmakers (Eisenstein, Sirk, Carne, Pasolini) I want to add, but my favs are not released by Criterion.
You have touched on something I have noticed about the "my favorite Criterion" lists when they come around every few months. I think some of the best movies in the collection are in the Eclipse series and these are almost always overlooked.

After taking the plunge into the Eclipse sets during the November B&N sale, these are the only Criterions I have been watching lately. The 8 blu-rays I bought during the sale sit on the shelf. I will get to them eventually, but for now I am discovering many wonderful new films. I am about to dive into Oshima's Outlaw Sixties next, having just finished the Samuel Fuller set. I am more excited about discovering so many great little gems in the Eclipse sets than I am about most of the new films Criterion is releasing.

Although I have made the switch to blu-ray and am reluctant to buy DVDs anymore, the fact is that the films in these sets are unlikely to ever see upgrades, so there is no sense in holding out like I did for so long with the Larisa Shepitko films.
