- Dogs in Space
- Rumble Fish
- Rock -n- Roll High School

A Night to Remember (Blu ray upgrade)

The Last Temptation of Christ (Blu ray upgrade)

What else?
Being John Malkovich (March or April)
Bitter Rice
Wild Strawberries
Y Tu Mama Tambien
With the way these have been delayed I don't think there's any reason to believe they "could happen any month now", if you know know what I mean...

I didn't think that A Night To Remember has been announced or hinted at?

It would be a nice release though. Someone a while ago mentioned Mulholland Drive; that would be very sexy.

I've never seen The Last Temptation of Christ, but it looks very interesting. How religious is it?

It's actually not Biblical but based on a novel that explores the human elements of Jesus' life. It was very controversial when it was released.

I'm thinking Gold Rush is April. Usually the cartoons are either 2 or 3 months away.

It has been mentioned as coming. This showed up today on Criterion Facebook page.

Criterion needs to seriously look at picking up Targets and The Last Picture Show...as far as I know, both are pretty damn important pieces of cinema and have been neglected on DVD.

As far as the OOP titles are concerned, I would suggest getting your favorite titles as you can...because you never really know if/when Criterion may lose the license. I will add that an official warning or notice would be very nice to have for each title that goes OOP.

IMO, the majority of people in the USA would consider a large portion of the Criterion collection to be obscure films.

The reasons have already been stated...Americans generally do not watch foreign films, are obsessed with 'splosions, do not really seek out films outside of the Hollywood mainstream, etc.

For film fans who are well versed in what the Criterion collection has to offer, it will seem as if there really aren't that many obscure spines in there. After all there are a lot of directors featured in the collection that have been extremely successful in their respective countries, or their films did very well at the time of release.

If you ask the "average person" (in the USA) what their favorite Criterion films are, they will likely respond with "What's Criterion?" I know this as I have asked a lot of people that profess to love movies...and yet they have no idea of who Criterion are.

To those people, almost all of the collection would be obscure. For Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin...a lot of these films are their favorite ones.
Not true. People who collect movies are the same everywhere.
If you ask me The Grand Illusion and Robocop are films of equal importance.
Hard core cinephiles don't discriminate- all genres are equal. There are no such things as "foreign films", just films not in english.

Whats an "obscure" Criterion? To me it would be Mishima's short film "Patriotism". A rarely scene dramatized future suicide note captured on film. Thats obscure.

The films that don't belong are most of the IFC movies: A Christmas Tale, Antichrist they are just doing IFC's special editions as they did in the past for Disney: Armageddon, The Rock, Chasing Amy (I think they really wanted Clerks).

A lot of great stuff coming down the pipeline.

The upgrades look nice, as well as some of the new titles. Some of the ones I am looking forward to the most are Being John Malkovich, Traffic (yes, I do really like this film and it will be nice to get a Criterion BD of it IMO ), Godzilla, and I think Tiny Furniture looks interesting as well. If it doesn't make it to Netflix, I think it would be a "safe" blind buy for me. The trailer looked good, and made me laugh several times, anyway.

I will admit that I am generally drawn to the most "well known" titles, as they usually aren't blind buys for me, but I am still a relative "noob" to the collection.

As time goes by, I am sure I will develop a deeper understanding (and therefore appreciation) for a wider array of directors and film movements.

I sent them a nasty return e-mail letting them know that maybe they ran out of the product but the "release date" had certainly not changed.
And yet I received an email 2 days ago telling me that Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter had shipped.

My $8.80 Copy of Monsoon Wedding came. It was still wrapped in its originally wrapper and in perfect shape. Great deal.
