If you decide to go with M, you ought to consider the Universum edn rather than the Criterion.

Do you think that I need to have received the email to send in my White disc for a replacement, or should I be fine sending it in without getting an email?

I'm wondering the same thing. I've sent a couple of e-mails now but haven't gotten a reply.

I need to wait until they get the Carlos replacement discs, though.

M certainly. The Thin Red Line I'd not recommend as a blind buy, whereas M is blind-buy palatable if you don't mind old/B&W/subtitling (which I assume you don't being on this thread).

The German Universum edition - which I own - features the most recent restoration on this film undertaken in Germany. It features a slight picture upgrade to the Criterion and Moc/Eureka editions, but the biggest upgrade is on the audio front where the noise floor if significantly reduced. You can find out more about this release and its differences here on this site:

Interview with one of the restoration artists, Torsten Kaiser: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6885

Review: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/M-Blu-ray/18091/#Review

Each release of this film on its own is stellar though, featuring extras that are unique to its edition.

Another big +1 for M.

I really liked this film a lot and cannot recommend it high enough.

The Universum release does look as if it is an excellent release, and (from my understanding) it could be debated either way as to which release is the "best".

Please note that I have not seen the Universum edition, so I am merely going by what I have read, not experienced. Either way, I am sure you would be pleased with either edition.

The Thin Red Line is an excellent film as well, and I still have my old DVD of it, bit IMO it wasn't quite the "art of film making" type of piece that M was, if that makes sense.

Having said that, I think you would be happy with either purchase. Both films are quite different from one another as well, so they are two very different experiences and must be looked at as such.

Which, at that time, it certainly was.
Right, I meant something different by the term holy grail than the other reviewer. My point is that I wasn't aware when I wrote my review that it might appear I was writing to dispute with what the other person had said, which I was not. The reason I'd even clarify such a thing is I often see user reviews mentioning what someone else has said and it generally sounds petty and sometimes the review being disputed has been deleted making any mention of it confusing at best and pointless at worst.

Haven't seen either one yet. Ambivalent about Thin Red Line, but a little embarrassed about not seeing M. Given that Peter Lorre stars and Fritz Lang directs I'd go with M on pedigree alone.

I'd pick The Thin Red Line, I love it. I blind bought M based on its reputation, and was really, really disappointed with it.

See Cinemach's answer. The review on this site addresses the differences.

If you are Region A locked, the Criterion is a fine edition.
The Universum is region free, so being region A locked is not an issue. Decide on the extras vs. the better sound and other restored bits mentioned in the review. You can probably get the Criterion cheaper during the B&N 50 per cent off sale. If you decide to import, I'd probably go with Grooves-Inc.

Does anyone know of any rumors of any BD going OOP soon? How soon before they go OOP do we hear about it? Just curious because there are so many I want and I of course would like to pick those that might go OOP first

Your best bet is to buy what ones you really want in order of priority, and if something DOES go OOP, you have plenty of time to find it online/in-a-store before the stock runs out. Even Criterion directly will have a decent supply from the time they announce a title as being OOP, until the time they no longer have any.

The reason I am posting it here (besides obvious reasons of me and my love for the movie) is he is actually making some progress. Supposedly he has had Sam Fuller's (who is in the film) wife Christa Fuller, and Tom Farrell, one of Nicholas Ray's assistants sign this petition.

So anybody that wants to help, you can sign it too. I figure I will help him out by posting it here, since I want it released as well.

Signed and forwarded the link to a half-dozen people who'd also want to.

Seems like it would be a great complement to The BBS Story..... Criterion, are you listening?

I believe in the 'Criterion Trade' thread someone had it for $19 shipped

It might be something to consider that The Thin Red Line is possibly the best looking release in the history of home video

Next to Tree of Life, not surprising for another Malick, I'd say that's a fine statement.

Heres a real odd question....Do you think if you write to Criterion you can get some of those blue stickers from the outer covers? I like to peel them off and stick to the case after I open them but some have torn trying to get them off the wrapping. Yes, I know its odd

You can look up what's in stock at your local BB by going to their website. Very store dependent. And some stores seem to file them all together alphabetically as Criterion.

There's a thread over at criterionforum. Skimmed it a while back, but my recollection is that apparently the censored version is about all that's available. It also discusses some of the releases out there.

I pre-ordered the Pathfinder dvd set when it first came out, but it arrived with one of the discs loose and rather scratched up, which is probably a good thing because it gave me a chance to read the pq reviews and an excuse to return it and just wait for somebody to do it right. Still waiting...
