I take issue issue with the assumption (or generalisation) that everyone thinks the Coens can do no wrong... There has been plenty of criticism of their works here and elsewhere. I personally love their work but a few of their films haven't quite done it for me (I'm thinking of Burn After Reading, and to some extent Lebowski). Plenty have folks have come down hard on A Serious Man, but I think it's brilliant. Barton Fink is also a minor masterpiece.

The Coens are very smart writers and directors, and it shows on the screen. I think some folks get put off because they think the Coens are elitist filmmakers.

Anyway, to each their own. I like Gilliam too, but would rate him well below the Coens. His films are visually amazing but seem to fall down in the storytelling and characterisation.

On another note... is there any chance that we'll get a blu reissue of Jules et Jim? It would be nice if they could fix the bit where the few frames are reversed.

Sure, watch I Am Waiting (which is Kurahara's first film) and Rusty Knife
They both star Yujiro Ishihara, who was considered a huge star at the time (he's also in Kurahara's I Hate But Love, which is in the The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara box-set).
I've never seen Youth of the Beast, but I'm tempted... looks great.
It's not that Suzuki's films don't have plots, but rather that the plot is the departure point for formal and stylistic experiments.
Btw, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog is heavily influenced by Branded to Kill, even copying directly one of the assassinations.

The Spirit (2008) is easily the worst film of the last decade. I had to finish it, just so I could confirm it.
It was utterly mind-bogglingly wretched! Who knows what Frank Miller was thinking, but he certainly wasn't thinking about Will Eisner's original comics (I have a large pile of them and they are truly some of the greatest comics ever).
I have Pathfinder and Bad Boys 2 as my numbers 2 and 3 of worst films of the last decade.

The Spirit might be a candidate for so bad it is amazing, along the lines of Southland Tales, the first Bloodrayne, and Black Dahlia. I have never read the comics, so I assumed whatever the hell was happening on screen must have some grounding in the source material. When I learned what the books were actually like, it just makes for some seriously furrowed brow.

I loved, loved, A Serious Man. Don't see what people dislike about it, unlike Furn After Reading, which I also really like but can see how it would upset some people. C'est la vie.

My dislike for it is because I've watched, and love, the original. Tom Hanks is a poor substitute for Alec Guinness. Not to mention Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Frankie Howerd, and Kenneth Connor also have roles in the film. Alexander Mackendrick directed it as well. We all know Mackendrick's directorial skills from The Sweet Smell of Success, which he made 2 years after The Ladykillers. That is why I think the Coens remake is very bad.

It's not really a generalisation, because everyone I talk to, in real life, outside of this forum, believes that. I take issue with the fact that most people on this forum seem to think anyone who has any opinions about films and directors only post on this forum, IMDB, and/or are some sort of semi-professional/professional critic. Christopher Nolan is another one who can apparently do no wrong in the eyes of the people I associate. Again, this feels like people are trying to push films/directors on me, by saying that I'm making assumptions and/or generalisations, and that I am just assuming a certain film maker to be too elitist for my tastes.

I don't consider them to be elitist, quite the opposite actually. If you want elitist film making, watch Henry Jaglom. I also think that your comment about the Coens being very smart, and how it shows in their film making, is a bit off putting, because it implies that most people who don't enjoy their films, or think they are elitist film makers, are not intelligent enough to understand their films. I think some of the fans of the Coens act more elitist than anything.

Regarding Gilliam, a lot of the issues with his films often have to do with his poor luck, and his lack of control.
