I watched Closely Watched Trains yesterday and I liked quite a bit, so I am pretty curious about the Czech New Wave set. I do wish the libraries around me that get Criterion would get some of the Eclipse sets so that I could check them out before buying.

Just finished watching Man is Not a Bird from the set Eclipse Series 18: Dusan Makavejev Free Radical and I was completely impressed by it. The film is actually really simple plot-wise but the real amazing stuff lies well underneath. The use of the camera and editing caught me off guard at first. It was like watching an early Godard film but with a very different neorrealistic appearance. The way Makavejev portrays each individual as nothing more than mere normal people made me focus a lot more in the underlaying critique. The individualistic threats Makavejev threw around the entire film was kind of a slap in the face to the Communist regime. A truly amazing film that should have gotten its own spine. Can't wait to finish the set .

I think Barnes and Noble usually has a 50% off DVD sale in the spring. Not sure exactly when because in the past I never paid any attention to it. However, the Eclipse sets will be on sale then before the usual 50% off Criterion sale in July.

I just finished watching Seijun Suzuki's Gate of Flesh and I really liked it. Suzuki has become one of my favorite directors and Joe Shishido one of my favorite actors. I'm looking forward to blind buying Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill. I wanted to watch Branded to Kill on Hulu before I buy it but for some reason there's an issue with the synching of the voices. Its kind of weird cause its only that film and The Hidden Fortress that that happens to. Well, regardless I'm pretty confident ill enjoy it as I've enjoyed every other Suzuki I've seen.

In addition to me pushing The World of Henry Orient, and hopes the Criterion add it to their collection, I also kinda wish they would add this title as well:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060636/

It's a MGM title, so it's possible, and it's another Ruth Gordon film!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060921/ - This one would be even more fantastic. "Emergency, everybody to get from street!"

Thanks, yes at these prices it's usually worth it compared to waht they go for most of the time up here

So I live in Australia, which means Criterion.com won't ship to me. So I buy my criterions from Amazon. Lately i'm noticing though that a lot of their criterions are being sold, not directly from Amazon, but from some online comic store that won't ship to Australia. This limits my selection immensely. So I recently bought from Barnes and Noble, but it's been 4 weeks now and still no sign of my Blu-rays (Amazon usually only takes about 2 weeks on the cheapest shipping available). Since I really don't like waiting that long for my stuff to arrive, does anyone else have any suggestions for sites that are cheap?

Maybe I should try Amazon.ca. See if the unavailable titles from amazon.com are available to me there.

Well, i just did an experiment to compare prices. I added both The Killing and Paths of Glory to my account in both .com and .ca and including shipping: .com came to AU $55.60 and .ca came to AU $86.89. Big difference there! Not to mention that .ca said the average shipping time for the cheapest service was 30 - 40 WEEKS? Is that a mistake?

I've been getting DVDs and blu-rays from Amazon.com shipped to Melbourne for years and I've never had a problem. I've had Criterion blu-rays delivered very recently from Amazon.com with no trouble.
I've taken advantage of 2 - 3 of the Barnes & Noble sales. Your package will arrive, but you will need patience; I had to wait longer than 4 weeks one time. Very frustrating.
I used to buy from Amazon.ca years ago when the currencies were valued very differently, but you're much better buying from the US these days.
(It sucks that Criterion won't sell and deliver direct to Australia )

Canadians don't even buy from Amazon.ca most times. B&N is super slow, I live in Canada and it takes ME a month to get my BDs, and it's just a hop, skip, and a jump over the border.

As far as Amazon.com is concerned, click on the link that say "## new from" and you should be able to get Amazon.com's price of the product that will ship to you. I agree it's a pain in the arse that they put their marketplace sellers before themselves, but they think all of their customers are Americans, and are trying to offer them the cheapest price. The selection hasn't been limited, but in many cases, the Amazon.com price is higher. You can also use this site to go directly to the Amazon.com price, by clicking the buy now button on a Blu-ray entry.

Thanks for the reply DrBikeShorts.
Yeah I usually never have a problem with Amazon, and alot of their criterions are still sold directly through Amazon so that's no problem (I bought two on Friday), but more than half (of what i've recently tried to purchase) are now being sold through Newbury Comics and state they cannot be shipped to my location (Island of Lost Souls was the most recent I tried to purchase that wouldn't let me).
I only used B&N recently because they had 40% off blu-rays so I took advantage to get 3 of the titles Amazon wouldn't ship to me, and i''ll use them again when the half price sale is on, but their normal prices are just too high.

Thanks BohemianGraham. That solved it! Didn't realise you could still get it directly from amazon if it was sold through someone else cheaper.
Hooray!

Yeah, B&N aren't worth it outside of their sales.
Meanwhile, I just put in an order at Amazon.uk (non-Criterion, of course). I've had packages from there in a week, as well as over 3 weeks
You know that the price is cheaper than the listed price, because we don't pay the VAT? Also, we get free shipping

I saw "Closely Watched Trains" in late March of 1968 on my first date with the woman who became my wife (we had met at a party a few weeks earlier). We were supposed to go to the Fillmore East to see The Doors, but it was sold out. I remember liking the film, but I really no longer remember it, so I guess I'm going to have to order it.
