Well I am a member of quickflix, so I added all their Godard movies to my queue anyway. I think it was most, if not all of his films (besides from 2000 onward).

Criterion put up something on their Facebook. Apparently it may be harder to keep public domain films in the public domain from now on.

That's very true. I haven't been around many hipsters. I am from Iowa, all we have are rednecks around here.

I just find it odd that anyone would buy a premium product they do not enjoy, just to look cool. How could they ever actually have an "intellectual discussion" regarding the collection if they all hate the films?

Regarding the region free Insignia players, I was under the impression that BB no longer sells that particular model. I had read/heard/saw somewhere that once it was discovered you could do a region free "hack" to the players, they were discontinued, and replaced with another model.

Anyone know the full story, or how to distinguish the two different models?

I have toyed with the idea of going region free for a while now and a low cost option would be a great way to get into the worldwide market, to see how much I would actually take advantage of it.

$59.99 refurbished, no idea what if anything shipping might run.

Some people have had to roll their firmware back but I was able to change region settings out of the box.

There's a region free player thread with more info and I *think* somebody even started a thread about this particular model.

How far away are you from the Canadian border? Wal-Mart up here sells a Seiki that happens to be region free for about 80 bucks. It's not a bad little machine, and is ridiculously easy to "hack.":

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/seiki-bd660/10959

It converts PAL to NTSC. DVD is 100% region free, while you'll have to use the code to swap between regions. I have my player defaulted to Region B, as I ordered Withnail and I (region free for the film, PAL extras), and Sleeping Beauty (way cheaper to buy brand new from the UK than it was to purchase used in NA, and it's Region B locked). I haven't had a chance to order more from the UK, due to my car issues and several NA releases interest me more.

You could always buy a BD drive for your computer and put AnyDVD HD on there, as that strips out the Region-coding of BDs for playback. However, this route is more expensive (depending on how readily you can get to Canada of course) because you need to buy the drive, buy playback software such as Arcsoft, and purchase AnyDVD, and have a computer capable of being an HTPC that you can connect to your TV.

Why would you have to buy playback software? You get an OEM version bundled with the drive and I doubt you're missing anything from the retail version just for playing discs.

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but I didn't see it. I was browsing Hulu and even if you don't have Hulu+ you can still watch a small number of their Criterions for free (you have to watch ads but you don't have to sign up for Hulu+). I have no idea how long these are available for free, but as of now the films are:

The Beales of Grey Garden
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Breaker Morant
The Long Voyage Home
Faces
Mikey and Nicky
Foreign Correspondent
Opening Night
General Idi Amin Dada
Quadrophenia
Deprisa, Deprisa
Room at the Top
The Devil and Daniel Webster
The Ruling Class
History Is Made at Night
Shadows
Hoop Dreams
Stagecoach
Hopscotch
To Be or Not to Be
I Married a Witch
A Woman Under the Influence

And a bunch of Zatoichi: the Blind Swordsman films:
The Adventures of Zatoichi
Zatoichi and the Doomed Man
Fight, Zatoichi, Fight
Zatoichi and the Fugitives
New Tale of Zatoichi
Zatoichi Challenged
Samaritan Zatoichi
Zatoichi's Cane Sword
The Tale of Zatoichi
Zatoichi's Flashing Sword
The Tale of Zatoichi Continues
Zatoichi's Pilgrimage
Zatoichi and the Chess Expert
Zatoichi's Revenge
Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold
Zatoichi's Vengeance

Has anybody watched the film Street Thief? It's a mocumentary that felt so identical to Man Bites Dog. I actually loved it quite a lot, and hope this director keeps making movies.

It's on Netflix for those of you who haven't seen/are interested.

Depends on where you buy it. Newegg Canada didn't see fit to bundle OEM playback software with my LG. Of course you're also correct that you don't have to buy any, there is some open source software out there that's free too. I just happen to prefer Arcsoft when I tried a free trial. I hardly use my BD burner for playback, it's mainly for backup. AnyDVD is still a software you have to pay for, unless you get it from alternate channels. Actually, all the software can be found via alternate channels.

For the dummy's guide to film noir: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_noir (yeah it's wiki, hence me calling it the dummy's guide as it's a starting point), all three films. Night of the Hunter and the Fuller films meet several of the basic elements that make a film film-noir:

Quote:
Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.
The two Fullers come after 1962, which seems to be the cut-off point between film-noir and neo-noir. So they may be neo-noir.

Here's a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_noir_titles

Okay, I know Death Blow is coming from the same source as Cry, Cry Again, but I don't know about Mountain High. Personally I hear there's massive print problems with Chunnel, which is a pity

I've heard the print is in bad shape. Hopefully, it, along with Ponce de Leon sees a release.

Agreed, but it's better than the other discussions as of late.

Amazon is preparing to ship Gojira, so here's hoping I'll have it by the weekend. I also watched A Story of Floating Weeds last night, and really enjoyed it. I started to watch the colourised, sound remake Floating Weeds as well, but it was getting late. I'll probably finish it up tonight, followed by My Life as a Dog. My computer's getting pretty full with all the PVRs I'm getting via TCM.

Tonight, they're doing a Max Ophuls film tribute (in EST):

8:00 PM - The Reckless Moment
9:30 PM - Caught
11:15 PM - Letter From an Unknown Woman
1:00 AM - The Exile
2:45 AM - La ronde
4:30 AM - The Earrings of Madame De...

Canada has a different schedule, unfortunately (in EST):

8:00 PM - The Reckless Moment
9:30 PM - The Two Mrs. Carrolls
11:05 PM - One Reel Wonder: Fish Tales
11:15 PM - Chain Lightning
12:51 AM - One Reel Wonder: How To Sub-Let
1:00 AM - The Exile
2:45 AM - La ronde
4:30 AM - The Earrings of Madame De...

Speaking of public domain, Universal is releasing a DVD of Charade in March. I'm not sure if Last Temptation is public domain but Universal is also releasing a DVD of it in March.

It seems superfluous but it's Universal!

I watched Chungking Express this weekend, and i have a question for everyone. The review here on Blu-ray.com mentions "the disc also hosts the full-blown documentary by Tony Rayns in which he effectively deconstructs Chungking Express."

My disc doesn't have this, and it's not listed on the packaging. Was this included previously and removed at some point? Anyone know?
