Definitely a great film.

I have to disagree a tad....The cinema was made for Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra!!

I hope criterion releases Le Samourai soon. This movie is my favorite Melville film (Army of Shadows, a close second). It would be great if Un Flic also gets a criterion treatment.

That's not the same film SB was referring to. He was referring to The Game, which is a David Fincher film that everyone seems to want.

Watched Louis Malle's Vanya on 42nd Street. Interesting piece of film-making. I don't know much about Anton Chekhov and his work, and I had never heard of "Uncle Vanya"...but I really enjoyed the simplicity of this film as an invitation to experience his work (even if the script for the play was translated in a little bit of "Americanese"). It's not a CC blu-ray I will add to my collection, but it was worth seeing.

My advice: snail mail. You'll get a reply sooner.

Write them a letter but don't include your email address. They'll think someone writing them an actual letter is charming and they'll reply with a letter of their own

No sh*t?

That would make a triple dip for me (on blu). Where did you hear about that?

Thanks. I have Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street and Buster Keaton's The General ready to watch.

THIS! Simply put it blows the Criterion release out of the water, even in the DVD edition. The only way Criterion could equal this is by licensing all the bonus features from them.

I Second that, Le Samurai is tops. Funny thing is I saw The American and Drive weeks before Le Samorai(both clearly influenced by it) and that didn't take anything away from it. Le Samorai is King. Didn't John Woo say it was the coolest film ever made?

Fortunately, those that haven't seen it, can now stream it on NetFlix. This is how I saw it for the first time. A great film and one that I would welcome on blu...

I found The Lodger to be excellent, it greatly exceeded my expectations. I was kind of hoping for a different ending, but overall I really enjoyed it. The silent film experience was interesting as well. It's a little strange to see people talking but not hear them, but the story was exceptionally easy to follow, yet engaging and not oversimplified. Though I shouldn't have been, given the director, I was surprised at how chilling the film was all the way through.

I also watched The Most Dangerous Game the other night from the same website. I enjoyed it very much as well. Part of the reason I wanted to watch some of these old public domain films is so that I could view them for free and then be wowed if/when they are upgraded to Blu. I would be very pleased to see either of these get a release from Criterion or otherwise.

I purchased the DVD box set of Hitchcock at Wal-mart for $5 that had 20 films on there including the Lodger. I found it excellent as well. Hitchcock is very clever with conveying messages and moods, and the silent pictures were a perfect medium for him to go all out. The other one I saw was blackmail, I recommend that one too

Deep Discount also just shipped my copy of TLToC
(I was expecting quite a delay)...

On a side note, besides the typical Amazon/Ebay sites, are there any other little treasure-trove sites that offer used/new copies of OOP Criterion DVDs? I've started to pick up a few of them (Forbidden Games being one of them amongst others) and was just wondering if there were any additional sites. I've got a bit of the "Collector's Sickness" and would like to some day own most Criterion releases (unrealistic, really...but one can dream, right?)

For myself I am just amaze how well Blu-ray make these old movie come alive like never before (or at least since they were first shown in theaters originaly). Also a lot of people just cannot get the pacing of older movies. This as nothing to do with age either, I know this guy in his 50s now and the simple idea to even watch a movie like The Great Dictator or Seven Samurai would give him headaches. Imagine now trying to make him watch something like Les Salaires De La Peur or L'Année dernière à Marienbad if he can't even digest something as easy as Seven Samurai?
Absolutely, Blu-ray seems to get the most out of black and white movies, yet most people would never buy those titles on the format (or ever).
People who think that old movies have a slower pace should just watch M, in my opinion. Though the odd use of sound could be putting some off, and of course the fact that it's German could put others off, the pacing and the editing is very quick. Very much a movie years ahead of its time.
I'd be hilarious to get someone unexpected to watch L'Année dernière à Marienbad . I do think that Les Salaires de la Peur is fairly straightforward, though one of the best thriller's I'll ever see. I'm certain that I could get someone like my brother, who's not really interested in older movies at all, to watch that, as opposed to Resnais' film, or even Det Sjunde Inseglet.

You may be right on that, it is a bad example on my part

I just receive so much comments (negative comments) for my movie wall because I have so few recent movies. I just find recent movies not horrible but most of them just don't seem to offer me much in wanting to see them again, while my older classics I just never get tired of watching. I would rather watch something like Harvey 15 times in a row instead of watching The Dark Knight again.

Nothing. I was pointing out stuff that people in this thread have a problem with, and I'm sure someone here is anti-Dutch. I'm not. Notice how my list included my own nationality, Canadians. I'm not self-loathing.

I haven't seen The Major and the Minor mentioned. It's his directorial debut. A nice little pre-Lolita comedy that, with the ending, makes you wonder how the hell it got through the production code.
