September predictions:

Road Trilogy
Y tu mama tambien*
Children of Paradise (DVD/BD upgrade)
Grey Gardens/The Beales of Grey Gardens (BD upgrade)

* - I'm gonna keep guessing it until it actually happens. I'm guaranteed to be correct one of these months!

Oh, I forgot about the Samurai Trilogy. That's three movies in one release, now I feel a little silly. It's coming out soon too...

I own everything else though. Maybe that's the issue -- I've bought & watched my way through everything they've released (except Harakiri because their release looks inferior to the UK/JP transfer) so it feels like they've released little to me.

I guess I should get a region B player and nab all the UK releases and just buy them again for Criterion's better extras and stuff when they get around to releasing them.

Personally I just want a new clear Criterion case and honestly don't feel like mailing back my cover artwork to get one. I don't order direct from Criterion enough for the 10.00 Gift Certificate to be of a benefit. But for others there you have it.
Thanks so much for posting this! I have every title in that list and they're all affected. My copy of Branded to Kill also had this issue but is not included in Criterion's list. Anyone else have the issue on BTK?

It's on my copy of Branded to Kill too. My copy of The Killing has the same issue as well, bought a few months ago so maybe only on more recent print runs?

Too me, atleast, prolonged use of voiceovers can often come across as weak filmmaking, as if the director couldn't figure how to visually translate an idea to the audience, and in Malick's case it can sometimes feel overbearing, as if he is trying to force feed his opinions and philosophy to you. That was def how I felt about Tree of Life, and really heavy handed too.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm not really sure why, but I guess they have to find that fine line. I found that it worked in Thin Red Line, even though there was a lot of it. Maybe it was because of the nature of the setting, and how people take stock and reflect on their lives in near-death experiences, or when surrounded by so much death and brutality. It seemed to have a natural place.
I get annoyed with voiceover, too, and I think weak filmmakers use it when they can't do the visuals in a comprehensive way. But I don't find that in Malick; in fact, I think his use of voiceover is pretty unique and adds to the richness of his films rather than subbing for quality. Malick voiceover is usually a character commenting on an action--in support or counterpoint--and the voice gives us one more stream of info to handle as we watch the film. And the voiceovers aren't always reliable. Voiceover is most distanced from the action in Thin Red Line, but you find that same musing voice in all the Malick I've seen. I think it adds a lot.

I don't think I'd call it a crutch, either. It's a style element, like jump cutting, nondiegetic sound or long tracking shots.

I was a little conflicted about Tree of Life, too, because idea-centered films that develop idea at the cost of story and character don't usually resonate with me. I did love the story and visuals, though. Fortunately, I saw The Mill and the Cross and Melancholia at about at the same, so I was a little more receptive to movies like that than usual. It's not his best (as far as I'm concerned), but it was interesting to see what he'd do with a flat-out film essay.

But not just Kurosawa either -- look at how many Mizoguchi movies the UK has! I wonder if Japanese companies are reluctant to license Blu-ray releases to Criterion because the US and Japan are in the same region? There has to be some reason...
While I would never complaint to more Japanese movies I think that Criterion as release quite a few of them already. I sure don't mind that they go for a few different things

I wouldn't be surprised if The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp were announced soon, given the recent restoration and re-release (not to mention BD release here in the UK)

They had On The Waterfront on MoviePix today in HD (I almost had a stroke cause it's a movie made before 1990 and that is very rare for them, I suppose it took Marlon Brando) Saw the moive years ago, it,s not bad just wish any other actor had played in it beside Marlon Brando, there is just something about him I just cannot get into.

Me too!

I actually wish Criterion would give French films a break for awhile. I like them, but there's still too many. More German, Spanish, Greek, and Eastern European films please.

Egads, that is amazing. MPIX is pretty terrible these days. I like On the Waterfront, but I agree with you about Brando. I haven't even looked at the dish this week. The 'rents get MPIX, TCM, AMC, and the new Hollywood channels that include MGM and WB, but I've been watching Blus and streaming sites instead.

I am careful with my wordings of Brando cause it's gotten me in trouble in the past He is one of a few American actors that are well loved that I just cannot endure, he as always rub me the wrong way for some reason. The movies are excellent I just can't see him in picture

Just opened my copy of La Haine and it's also affected. Hopefully Criterion acknowledge that more titles than those they've identified are affected.
