If you are getting into silent films you should check out The Phantom Carriage, also on Criterion BD.

At one point, Chaplin stated that it was the greatest film ever made. (up to 1921 anyway)

It's usually about a month for me when I got things from B&N during sales in the past but I suspect more Poste Canada and the border check then B&N as they always send me notice that it was ship within 5 days of me placing an order. Things have gone a little crazy on mail since Harper as taken over I think him and his goverment see enemies everywhere

I think we need to stop talking about the sale as its getting people worked up for no reason,
[Show spoiler]also people are beginning to think they're entitled to cheap BDs as if they're an essential need.

I'm getting 3 criterions tonight. One is a blind buy, le cercle rouge. I've heard good things about it. Do people prefer it to the other Melvilled out on BD such as Leon Morin or Army of Shadows?
If there is no sale I will just do like I use to do, order them one at time picking those I want first and having the rest wait.

No kidding. I won't express my thoughts on der kommissar, as I fear bannination. He might be spying on this forum as well, given the recent Parks Canada thing.

It takes about a month for me to get B&N stuff as well. B&N is actually cheaper right now than Amazon.com or Amazon.ca for the titles I really want. Deep Discount also has a few on sale, and is pretty close in price terms. I might just split my order between those two places closer to July.

Since Criterion has been pairing up films each month, it could happen. The Tenant hasn't been picked up by Olive and Paramount will not release it.

Thanks for The Phantom Carriage recommendations. I've added it to my wishlist.

I got my criterions! 400 Blows came in the old Skool case, I'm not complaining as it doesn't seem to slip out like others said. What's with the paper insert stuck on the back of Darjeeling though? It's kinda weird, and I'm wondering if it's a normal thing with this release.

I was reading the other thread about The Game, it must be (at least it feel's like it is) the most ever wanted Criterion release ever. I never seen something like that before. While I was reading I started to laugh a bit and wonder, would it not be fun if it turn's out that they mess up the release somehow? I doubt it would happen as we are talking about Criterion but I think it would be fun to see it, DNR too death or some weird tin added to it I think the Internet would explode!

You are currently my favourite poster. I mean, I'm glad people are so happy about the announcement, but I personally didn't care for the film. I bet people will still say all that, regardless, like they do on every release.

Got nothing against Fincher if only that like Nolan "the hype" about him get's a bit annoying after a while but that, like Nolan is not his fault

Alien Cube was alright at least he tried to bring it back to Scott's style after the joke of Aliens by Cameron

Seven is alright but I never really had a wish to see again

The Curious Case Of Forest Gump was pretty ordinary

The Social Network is not bad but was hyped up a bit too much in my opinion

The internet would be fine. It may seem that way, but people freak out about everything in the main thread. It's a mainstream movie, that's all, more people have seen it. I do think it will be the biggest selling CC of the year.

I liked Seven and Fight Club alright, but not enough to upgrade my DVDs. I also felt his last two films, social network and dragon tattoo were a bit overhyped.

By who? It had a pretty average/fair response from critics and audiences. By the internet forums? Perhaps.

I just read on wiki that Johnny Rotten tested for the role of Jimmy in Quadrophenia but couldn't get insured
That would have been interesting. Maybe CC can do The Wall. I don't think it has a US BD release.

I agree with you guys. I just don't understand the love. His films are very shallow to me.
I was really disappointed with his take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It's hard to say because I loved the darker tones, the style of it and Trent Reznor's score.
I don't think I'll be heading to the theater to give him another shot on his next film.

I agree about Dragon Tattoo - the best part of it was the credit sequence.

Some of his films are perhaps a bit 'shallow' or style over substance, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing in all cases - I have a soft spot for Panic Room and Se7en and they both fall into this category. Fight Club, The Social Network and (especially) Zodiac are on another level though, I think. The Game is one of his weaker efforts for sure - it's ending really lets it down - so I don't get the hype for that to be on CC (along with Benjamin Button as well...).

As far as the 'overhype' goes, Nolan suffers from this to a far great extent - especially in regards to The Dark Knight which loads of people seem to love but always seemed overlong and incredibly narratively messy to me.

It seems like usually when a new set of Criterion films is announced I take the most interest in the one I see the least people talking about.

I'm really interested to see what Les Visiteurs du Soir is all about.

I couldn't get into The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I saw the Swedish films first, and really liked them, so that might be part of it. I loved The Social Network, but the screenplay was really the most outstanding part of that movie.

I generally like his stuff and I'm a big fan of Fight Club, Se7en, and Zodiac.

Given the fact that it's Carne, I'm very interested about this one.
