Slightly off-topic, but Sight & Sound releases their new list of the "Greatest Films of All-Time" sometime tomorrow!

Here are the past two lists (critics and directors) from 2002:

With that quick refresher, what are predictions for the new list? Something tells me Citizen Kane, as great of a film it truly is, will not be sitting on top on at least the Critics' list. I could be completely wrong, but considering this is the most massive list they've compiled to date (over 2,000+ critics) I wouldn't be too surprised seeing a change in films.

"Critics" as one would expect, are exposed to many more films than the average person... I'm not saying the average person can't go out, see Citizen Kane, and say "That's Great!" (I think it's a great film.... I know some people state it's overrated, but I would disagree, because I think it's a masterpiece) but at the same time, things like Last Year At Marienbad (another one I love unconditionally) are unknown to them, yet the critics are certainly familiar with it.

I would not be surprised to see a vastly different list from a "popularity" one, and a critic based one...... the problem is, people see a "Critic's Choice" type of list, and immediately dismiss it as "Film-snob-pretentiousness"

If something gets rave reviews, yet you have never seen it/heard of it, wouldn't you want to try to see it rather than say "oh, the source is just a snob" ?

Alex Cox is making a new doc on The Last Movie. So we will have 2 docs (the other being Hopper's own The American Dreamer) for this film, and it's not even on dvd anywhere in the world. Sad.

Seems to me if Criterion decided to do Out of the Blue they might as well issue The Last Movie...

What Octagon said on shipping, if you order from their website and not amazon (I have read the shipping is more expensive per item through amazon). I recently placed an order for three BDs already released and one late August pre-order (Private Hell 36). Because the pre-order date is still three weeks out, they went ahead and shipped the three other movies in the order separately and will ship the pre-order closer to its release date.

Also, they are quite good at shipping pre-orders well before release date. My Olive BDs of Johhny Guitar and Rio Grande shipped last week, when their official release date is August 7.

As for packaging, so far I have received 4 orders from them, all well packaged in a box with air pillows (remember the days when amazon used to do this?). Each order was four movies.

Swap singin in the rain for Seven Samuraiband thats a near perfect critics list.

You could probably use the IMDB top 250 (or 100 to be fair) as a "popularity" list and see your point is proven. Last I remember The Dark Knight is in the top 10 I believe; it certainly is a great movie, and I love it, but I do not think it is top 100, let alone top 10 material. I will always prefer a critics list because a critic is someone who has to know what they are talking about, like a doctor has to know what symptoms go together to making what illness. Not saying critics are as important as doctors, but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say with this comparison. That being said, just like some doctors, not all critics should be trusted.

I have never seen Heaven's Gate but for what I have been reading in the last posts it seems like something not worthy of release ! Why did Criterion chose to release it? They have so many great films on their Hulu channel and a BIG pond of amazing and UNtouched films worldwide but they set to release something that doesn't look like a great film . I can see the "importance" of the film in the historic context but still fail to understand WHY are they pulling the trigger on this one .

In the late 90s/early 2000s, HG was undergoing a critical re-evaluation primarily in Europe. There was a wind of it being an unheralded masterpiece from this contingent. I find it completely worthy of inclusion. It may not be a great film, but it is important for other reasons, i.e. the ending of the 2nd filmic golden age of American film, the lessons of too much power and ego, etc, and as I said, I do think there is a great movie in the footage. I think it has the possibility of being a fascinating edition.

The only movie in that list that I don't have on DVD or Blu-Ray is 8 1/2 and from the reviews, I don't want to blind buy on it. The rest of the movies in that list, I have all of them and all I can say is, they really are all great!

My predictions:
The Godfather(s) will drop off due to the new rule that you can't combine them.

Citizen Kane won't top either list.

Dreyer will make the top 10 with either The Passion of Joan of Arc or Ordet.

Yi Yi will be the highest placed 2000s film.

Re: Heaven's Gate - The "Director's cut" prompted a bit of a critical reevaluation recently and some consider it to be one of the best films of its time.

Predicitons:

*Citizen Kane may fall off the summit of the critic's list but will still be on it. Vertigo has a great chance to ascend to the top. I think Kane may still top the director's list, though

*The Godfather will still be on the list due to the new single-film rule (which I wish they'd kept), and The Godfather Part II will drop out

*I wouldn't be surprised to see Singin' in the Rain - as great a film it is - drop out of the critic's list, as well as one of the silents

*I think the top of the director's list will stay the same, but there will be some shakeup at the bottom. That even means Rules of the Game maybe falling out!

*Where's L'Avventura on either of these lists???

I agree that Mulholland Drive will be the highest rated film of the last decade. Though I don't believe In the Mood for Love will be too far behind it in that strata, and wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed the top film due to its critical standing.

Speaking of other recents I think The Tree of Life could place pretty solidly as well on both fields, given the adoration it received from both critics and especially directors (even if I don't see it). Maybe it could even make a move onto one of the lists? Though I doubt it would, that's not a move so unprecedented on either poll for a film so recent (L'Avventura made the list two years after being release).

Thanks again Dude! I just ordered "Tenenbaums" from them, as they say it's "in stock", which likely means they will be able to ship that one early/on-time. I'm waiting a bit on Lonesome and Quadrophenia, as they are showing up as "0 - Stock" and I wonder if they are unsure as to whether they'll get their stock on those titles early/on-time. I'll wait a week or so to see if that status changes.
