I had a chance to see a screening of the wicker man with the director ... It seems the source negative have been lost forever ... So the chance of a re master is not possible.

I'd have to go with Jean Vigo too. It was depressing to know after I finished L'atalante for the first time that it was pretty much the end. And it's terrible because the film singlehandedly showed the potential Vigo had to become greater than any of his successors. It's a damn shame.
Kurosawa and Kubrick are pretty good choices too. But those guys already made so many great films. Kubrick's A.I would have been interesting to see, though. That is, if he really was willing to make it, at all. EDIT: Krzysztof Kieslowski. Now that's definitely someone who had a few more films in him. Last edited by NexusVerbal; 08-20-2012 at 07:43 AM. |

This isn't Criterion related, but nonetheless I feel it works here:
Today I accomplished viewing Sátántangó in its entirety, minus a few interruptions and the obvious intermissions of course. What a devastating, depressing, evil masterpiece this film is. It has no good outlook on anything, especially for its massive runtime, yet manages to be quite watchable. Of course it does drag in some moments, and can go slightly overlong, but it's still a work of genius nonetheless. I hope we get a blu-ray soon, especially since The Turin Horse just got one. If it is released, it just better be a proper edition, as I've hear Facet's version of the DVD is pretty bad. And, to keep in line with the discussion topic, I'd have to choose either Hitchcock or Welles. Something about their personalities really draw me towards them. Edit: ****, misread the current discussion topic wrong. I'd just say Welles. Last edited by DarkRyder; 08-20-2012 at 10:41 AM. |

I'd agree with Jean Vigo. L'Atalante portended a great future. |

I misread the discussion topic wrong, but I'd still stick with Welles. Perhaps a proper Don Quixote, or maybe even Hearts of Darkness?
As previously said, if he were still alive we'd probably have proper Director's Cuts. Why did he have to eat himself to death? |

I'd love to see what Hitchcock could have done with modern day actors and technology. Not to say his older films weren't amazing with the acting talent in those days, but I'd be curious to see what he could churn out today if he were alive...
On another note, I was at B&N this weekend and saw a copy of Quadrophenia. I just checked the release date on criterion.com, and it most certainly says 8/28, next week. Weird. |

I could swear Barnes has a computer system that doesn't allow items to be sold before release date, although I could be confusing it with Circuit City, and Target. I would have tried to buy it for over a week early :-)

Just watched Harakiri, which is my first venture into Samurai film. Loved it, very dramatic with a superb story which is told perfectly.
Already got my eye on the upcoming Rashomon release but are there any others people here would recommend? Bear in mind, I really liked the way Harakiri was mostly heavily plot-driven and not just fighting and action for the sake of it. |

Yeah, some people here mentioned seeing advertisements in-store about B&N selling it 2 weeks early. I can't imagine why this title specifically.
