Default Likelihood of Criterion Blu Release

I don’t know if this is the best forum to ask this question, but there are several movies I’d like to see on Criterion Blu.

All of these have been issued by Criterion on DVD, but they are all available right now on Blu from a UK distributor. I’d rather have it on Criterion, but I don’t want to wait several years when I can get it right now from the UK.

The movies are:
Mr. Hulot’s Holiday
Mon Oncle
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Bicycle Thieves
Ugetsu monogatari
Sansho the Bailiff

Does anyone have any news, knowledge, or hunches about the potentiality of these getting a Criterion Blu release?

Thank you.

Forget the Tatis. Studio Canal own the rights to them now.

I also hope Colonel Blimp will come soo. Might have to wait for Bicycle Thieves as Umberto D just came out and they don't often release the same directors within a few months of each other.

Dan...got Les Vampires at a B&N in NYC during their 40% sale with a 20% coup. Watched the first three chapters and am really enjoying it!
I'm still waiting on my copy of The Navigator from importCD's. I held off getting Les Vampires due to money issues. Too much coming out in the next few months. After your comment I'm really regretting that decision now.

I wish StudioCanal and their partners would start releasing some of the films they have rights to here in the states. So far this year they have only released La Grande Illusion. Even then the quality of the packaging has taken a step back compared to their first batch of region A releases. Not to mention its missing a special feature compared to the UK release. However the PQ for the film is amazing. Mainly due to the extensive restoration of the film.

I'm thinking I may need to go ahead and by order the UK release of Colonel Blimp. Been waiting on a review first.

i was just playing i never bought one of these "fancy criterions" that are all the rage these days. i almost bought a copy of the curious case of benjamin button used for 8 dollars just to see what all the fuss is about and then i realized i hate that movie and wouldnt pay 8 cents for it even if it had the best PQ in the world (i dont even want to think about the extras that would come with such a thing).

The Tati's are unlikely, as the rights for them expire soon. BFI are rushing them out next month, and it's possible Criterion may do the same, but I doubt it. So get them from BFI while you can. God knows when StudioCanal will get around to releasing them.

Colonel Blimp and Bicycle Thieves will almost certainly come at some point, but we've not heard anything.

Same goes for Ugetsu and Sansho but I'd pick up the MoC releases anyway if I were you. They include two separate films you won't find on the Criterion releases.

Sorry that you're still waiting on The Navigator...I'm surprised mine was seemingly "delayed", as the release date was pushed up and Amazon was shipping theirs out before Import CDs. For the $12 difference in price, I was willing to wait.

The main reason I bought Les Vampires (money is VERY tight for me as well), was that I was in NYC visiting my wife's family and we passsed a Barnes and Noble on 5th Ave. It was a stressful day and since there was still a 40% off BD sale and I had a 20% coup besides...I decided to treat myself and looked at the Kino releases, as they never go on sale and the B & N upstate by me doesn't carry Kinos for the most part. I had heard good things about Les Vampires and I LOVE the silents, so I decided to give it a shot.

I wound up getting the UK version of La Grande Illusion, when it was first released. I've noticed that not only is the UK packaging nicer...but I think there are more supplements on it as well.

That's funny. I use that same excuse with myself to buy stuff when I otherwise shouldn't have. "I've had a bad day.. Think I'll treat myself to this new Bluray release!".

Thanks to BohemianGraham too. That was fast.

The Tati films look good to get. The Mizoguchi ones look good as well, but they're quite pricey right now on Amazon.co.uk

What are some other Criterion upgrades that you'd like to see (i.e., DVDs that Criterion currently sells, but does not have on Blu)?

My top choices would be:
1) The Thief of Bagdad (1940)
2) Tokyo Story
3) David Lean's Dickens films (Oliver Twist & Great Expectations)
4) Make Way for Tomorrow (though I already have the MoC)
5) Some Preston Sturges (Sullivan's Travels or others)
6) Any more Powell & Pressburger (maybe a box set)
7) The Most Dangerous Game (though unlikely with the recent release from Flicker Alley)
8) There are also a few films I've never seen that look interesting (Carol Reed's Night Train to Munich, Lang's The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, Ford's Young Mr. Lincoln, etc.)

Any thoughts on these?
What would your top choices be?

Out of the ones you've listed that is the one I'm really surprised they haven't upgraded yet. It would look great on blu.

There are a lot of Criterion DVDs I want to see upgraded to blu-ray. Off the top of my head, here are some that would get me doing a happy dance:

Le Samourai
The Cranes are Flying
Ballad of a Soldier
Ivan's Childhood
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
The Naked Prey
The Thief of Bagdad
The Bad Sleep Well
Tokyo Story
Picnic at Hanging Rock

The Naked Prey is one I don't see mentioned much. I saw it on TV when I was around 14, while flipping channels late one night and came across it not long after it had started. It totally drew me in.

Honestly, I'm sure I could pick quite a few off of anyone's wishlist of Criterions not yet upgraded. Not to mention many of the Eclipse sets, but those are remote at this point.

They are about £2.00's cheaper straight through Eureka. With free shipping as well.

One thing to be aware of when buying direct from Eureka: they don't deduct VAT. It's not a *huge* difference and on a single title free shipping and VAT more or less even out but if you're buying multiple titles it becomes more of a factor.
