So basically I shouldnt have traded my Children of Paradise DVD.

Those screencaps from this site and dvdbeaver make the characters look like Toy Story characters.

I will time stamp the times. The jacket compression is awful. I would have expected that from a Chinese knock off. Not Criterion.

The Directors approval is my point. What is the point of gritting a Director in and putting that on the cover and booklet if you hire some monkey to screw up the encoding.

GENIUS ! Best way to put it . I don't know if I should buy it or not. I can't get myself to support such a lazy and troubled release. Supporting such a poor job isn't going to get us anywhere. They should have waited for a better restoration instead of just pulling the trigger to release it now. Rushing things is always a bad thing but doing so in such a high-profile release is unacceptable. Criterion hasn't the fault for the restoration, the problem is that they green-lighted and used it instead of waiting for something better.

Any possibility this might become a Masters of Cinema title?

I don't really see what other choices Criterion would have, other than simply not releasing the film. I doubt there will be another restoration of this film any time soon.

The captures DVD Beaver took are blurred, don't forget. The Blu-ray.com ones are not, and show what's on the disc.

No. Second Sight have the UK rights and their BD, which is made from the same master, is releasing next week.

Does anyone know if Criterion is going to be having a sale on their site any time soon?

Any ideas on the possibility of a Band of Outsiders upgrade? Debating ordering the gaumont disc if it's english friendly. I know we are getting Week End in November, not sure if they would go back to Godard so soon.

The film is definitely "possible" but you never know with Criterion. Band of Outsiders seems to me like the next Godard upgrade but they may take months or even years. Breathless was released on September 2010 and Weekend is being released in November 2012. That's how long Criterion took to get another Godard on BD.

They do have some decent titles on sale now through the Hulu promo.

Everyone was expecting a big sale when they hit 100k likes on Facebook but that came and went with only a post of acknowledgment.

Short answer: who knows....

Thanks.

Any reviews up for Eating Raoul? Can't wait to see this film as I haven't owned it after the VHS era. Very funny film.

It doesn't bode well for Criterion eventual Le Samourai upgrade, given that Criterion edition of Children of Paradise is based on subpar Pathe's restoration too.Should we REALLY be worried about quality of Criterion Le Samourai upgrade (another Pathe's fail)? :/

Agreed. The current transfer for Le Samouraï is definitely completely unusable. I don't think Criterion would pick it up though. Are there any rumors or signs of another transfer of the film? Or could they just use the current Pathé one and remove the DNR? I mean would the transfer be usable without all the filtering, that was done in post?

oh yeah, I'm sure there will be another restoration tomorrow.
I mean the restoration isn't the issue people--it's the damn obsession with degraining and all the unnecessary dnr/filtering crap that was added in post.
this is it. this is the bd of Children of Paradise. it isn't going likely be changed unless the fools at Pathe decide to go another direction and do another transfer sans all the degraining crap. I mean it's only a seminal world classic for god's sake.
an MoC release won't mean crap either because they will STILL be working with the same degrained transfer. not too hard to understand.
all the blame is on what happened after the restoration got into the digital realm.
I'm so upset about this. I honestly felt ill while I read that review.
just a F^%king disgrace.

True. It's just really hard to believe those technicians working there don't understand film grain is picture information. It should be totally obvious that destroying the grain pattern leads to a soft, unnatural looking picture.
So why do they do that? Is it really, because they think todays viewers don't want to see any grain? So they think a grainy looking image makes the audience feel so repelled, that they will stop watching the film?
That's just completely ridiculous.
I mean everything shot on film has to have to at least some extent a fine grain pattern in the image.

I mean seriously, degraining a film like this one--a film that mostly only true film lovers will be watching anyway--has to be just about the most moronic move ever imo.
there really isn't any way to justify or excuse it.
It has to be just total unmitigated incompetence imo.
no other explanation could possibly make any sense.

This. It's absolutely unfathomable that such tools would be used for this film.

In such a banner year for high-profile releases, it really is amazing how some have been not up to par, particularly ones I was looking forward to (I'm looking squarely at you, UK David Lynch boxset).

So is Criterion going to talk about the children of paradise video screw-up? It seems unlikely that they wouldnt address this issue.

For every faulty Blu-ray that had been released then fixed, that faulty blu-ray was released into stores first.

CC is very responsive when the mistake originates from them, like Carlos and White's audio problems. But when it comes from the masters provided, like Blue's framing issues, they pretty much ignore it.

I think they will ignore this.

I mean what is wrong with people?
it's not that hard to understand.
what is Criterion supposed to do when the restored master they were given was degrained and ruined in post with excessive dnr and digital filtering?
THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO.
they can't take out the filtering.
they can't un-ring the f&*king bell ok.
what's done is done.
only Pathe can undo this mess by taking the unmolested files and creating a new master that leaves off all the digital tampering.
that is the only "solution" or "fixing" that could occur.
It's not a matter of Criterion "ignoring" anything because they couldn't change anything even if they wanted to.
