I've never seen Badlands. I attended the North American premier of To the Wonder earlier this month, and must say the film was uneven. I'm looking forward to seeing Malick's famous work.

But definitely McCabe... and while we're on Altman, The Long Goodbye and Nashville as well (although I realize they are all different studios). |

LOL touche. But even Chandler didn't know who killed one of the characters in the novel, when the screenwriters called him to ask while trying to adapt the script. That 5 minute "rundown" of what happened so far in the middle of the 1945 version is certainly helpful in that regard, although some of the best films are indeed cryptic.

I have been without a computer for a couple of weeks now (spilled coffee in my trusty old Macbook Pro because I am that much of a fool). I just came online today and then discovered that CHUNGKING EXPRESS had gone OOP. This is one of the titles that I have always wanted because I love it, but have so far postponed buying it because I saw it SO many times on DVD.
I managed to order the last copy on amazon.ca - the only place I could find that still had it in stock. But frankly I am not quite sure what I have ordered? The picture shows the Criterion edition. But in the info under 'studio' it says 'eOne Films' instead of 'Criterion Collection' like it says on amazon.com. Does anybody here know what that means? Is it just because eOne Films have the Canadian rights to the movie and distribute the Criterion BD, or is it special Canadian edition like that old Alliance version of Criterion's TRAFFIC (which differed slightly from the US version in the cover)? |

I don't know how they did it. Linklater claims he was in Greece late summer with Hawke to work on the script. Now they're in post-production?! Very much looking forward to Before Midnight

There is a lot of wishful thinking about "Badlands" going on here. How do you get from "Wacky Lambs" to "Bad Lambs" to "Badlands?"
Where is the announcement/press release? Not only on this but on some of the other things clued, like "On the Waterfront?" |

The word on criterionforum.org is that this deal is more than likely rather exclusively limited to works of living directors that have films that Warner themselves would be unlikely to release on Blu. So, while the speculation may be able to be increased, I wouldn't bet on any vintage WB/MGM/RKO films to be licensed. It's just not Warner's MO.

However, to answer your more general question, the time between a clue and an actual release announcement is rather arbitrary. The clue is simply meant to mean "we are working on an eventual release down the road", while official announcements are specifically three months ahead of the release month. There are clues on the larger New Years Eve drawings from two years ago that have not yet been officially announced (Y tu mamá también, Wild Strawberries Blu upgrade). As far as individual Newsletter clues that have not yet been formally announced with a release date, there are the clues from January '12 (Grey Gardens/The Beales of Grey Gardens Blu upgrade), On the Waterfront (May '12), and now Badlands (Sep '12). |

I ask because i remember that Criterion did a actual beautiful 2 disc set on DVD with all kinds of videos and cuts with remixes up the wazoo. Had commentaries by the film directors and the band. This set really opened my eyes to who the band really was. Not just some white rappers but true artists. I never saw another Criterion like it that just had so much different options to watching something before. I would buy a blu of it in a heartbeat.

Me either, but I can't wait. Along with Three Colors and the Apu series, this might become one of my favorite trilogies of all time.

In a way it'd be kind of ironic because Before Sunrise takes place in Vienna and it's been a while since I last saw it but - I'm almost certain the "Third Man" Ferris wheel makes an appearance. ![]() |

Watching my DVD copy of The Naked Lunch right now. If I get around to making a list of top weirdest films of all time, this would be right up there in the top 5, I swear.
![]() It looks darn good upscaled, but I am still hoping that Criterion will eventually put out a Blu-Ray release for this. ![]() |
