As I'm researching this for Spidey and myself...does anyone own/have feedback on a region free blu-ray/DVD player that I see Amazon carries for $139.00? It's the Orei BDP-M2. I've seen good and bad reviews on it and wanted to see if anyone else could offer an opinion on it.

Thanks!

Anyone have any guesses for the next Ozu blu released by Criterion?
If I were a betting man...I'd say Tokyo Story. And I wouldn't discount the possibility of the first Naruse blu-ray coming out in the near future. Either "When A Woman Ascends The Stairs" or one of the many currently on Hulu...or at least another Naruse Eclipse set.

Interesting choice as your fav...not my fav...but a great film nonetheless. I was quite surprised by "The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice", as I had expected something closer to his earlier style of directing. It was nice seeing something new, as I had not seen it before. I'm saving "Walk Gracefully" for a special occasion, though I think it will be featured on the next BFI Ozu boxset with his early gangster films.

I think my favorite of his films is "There Was a Father", as I can really relate to it from the side of the son (I lost my Dad at a young age) and from the perspective of the father himself. Though "A Mother Should Be Loved" is a very close second.

What I ordered was the complete Twilight Zone Blu-ray set, all 5 seasons (new), for $1 plus $2.98 shipping. What I'll get remains to be seen; I'm expecting it will be a cancellation notice!

I ordered The Game during the Criterion 50% off sale a couple of weeks ago. Criterion sent me the dark and barely readable version of the case. It appears to be random which one you get right now, at least until they go through their intiial batch.

My two items (yeahhhh, two... just had to add Les Vampires when I saw it) haven't been cancelled, which I was surprised by this morning, but I'm certain all of them will be if you were able to order that, seriously...that's baffling.

Thanks for the heads up! Now, if only I had TCM-HD so I could pretend I have the elusive Criterion Blu...

I wrote them a week ago and so far nothing.

They added the HD channel to DirecTV recently, so I've been really enjoying it.

BTW...I'll assume that you purchased Magical Mystery Tour. Is the audio worth the purchase? Other than the fact that I'm a big Beatles fan...I was impressed with the 5.1 mix on Yellow Submarine and hoped the music would sound as good on Magical Mystery Tour.

The audio is excellent. The PQ is very flat but to be expected based on available elements I suppose.

You have TCM-HD? I'll be right over, sir.

Re: MMT, not yet. The audio is the real attraction but I think the film is almost as hard to watch as The Monkees' 33 1/3 RPM... and that's pretty dire. As far as the sound goes, this site's review gives it high marks. The audio nerds at Steve Hoffman's forums have really dug into the nitty gritty of variations and slight errors in the mix. For now, between Yellow Submarine and Love (DVD-A) I'm pretty well stocked on Beatles 5.1 content. It's just a matter of time, though... after all, Iiiii've got a hole in me collection.

Thumbs up

One of those rare times that the OOP release is actually worth the effort and/or money to acquire it.

The Third Man is the best Criterion release I've ever seen.

This site is pretty good, I got Letter Never Sent for $18.99, Thin Red Line for $20 and the only place I've found that still sell The Third Man plastic replacement case.

I would love to see Criterion finally do this Carol Reed classic dr.mabuse. The Image DVD has been out of print for years, which is a sorry limbo state for such a fine film.
