The Criterion DVD of Passion has a few unique extras, but I still don't think they'll match the MoC release. It has 3 versions of the film after all, with 3 different sound tracks. My money is on just a 24fps version for Criterion, with the VoL score.

And I know Criterion sometimes use extensive source material for their booklets, but I don't think they've ever put together something even approaching 100 pages of critical writing/interviews. For me, Passion of Joan is something I'll almost certainly be buying from both companies. It's worth it.

For big imports, stuff that was going to make a fair bit of box office, dubbing was pretty common yes. If the film was more obscure, they'd just subtitle.

I have to admit, they did a good job on it. It took me a while to get used to watching it in French.
I can only tolerate dubs on films like Das Boot where the original actors do the dubbing. Or when it's an international cast and you have not choice but to dub it like '1900' or Herzog's 'Nosferatu.'

La Dolce Vita has a very good English dub, I first saw the film this way on the old Republic VHS (two tapes). It's excellently done, I hope that it can show up on a disc some day. Also, I believe the French dub of this has Anita Ekberg in her own voice, I think she was dubbed on the Italian and English soundtracks.

Das Boot also has an excellent English dub, I saw it this way in a theater when first released.

Interestingly, Nosferatu was filmed in a separate English version if I remember correctly.

Watching 1900 closely, I think that Depardieu and Sanda act their roles in English (I'm pretty sure about Depardieu, not so much about Sanda), along with DeNiro, Sutherland, Hayden, and Lancaster, so I feel comfortable watching this in English.

Same story with Aguirre, the Wrath of God, if you watch the actors' lips when speaking, most of them are are speaking English, including Kinski. I know most prefer the German dub, as do I, but it's the dub, not the English track.

Doesn't Ekberg just speak English in all the versions?

Is there some sort of revisionism going on at criterionforum.org? The "top" post about "The Tin Drum" is dated Wed Dec 22, 2004 8:06 pm, but the post is about the upcoming "complete cut," which is to be released in January of next year! This is incredibly prescient, writing about a 2010 restoration in 2004, isn't it? From the "2004" post:
DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION:

- New, restored high-definition digital transfer of the complete version, approved by director Volker Schlöndorff
- Newly remastered 5.1 surround soundtrack, approved by Schlöndorff and presented in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition
- New interview with Schlöndorff about the making of The Tin Drum and the creation of the 2010 restored, complete version
- New interview with film scholar Timothy Corrigan
- German audio recording from 1987 of author Günter Grass reading an excerpt from his novel The Tin Drum with musical accompaniment, illustrated with the corresponding scene from the film
- Television interview excerpts featuring Schlöndorff, Grass, actors David Bennent and Mario Adorf, and cowriter Jean-Claude Carrière reflecting on their experiences making the film
- Trailer
- New English subtitle translation
- PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Atkinson and 1978 statements by Grass about the adaptation of his novel
Should they delay the release and present the 2004 cut and the 2010 cut?

I posted here about how the director considers the 2004 release the director's cut, yesterday, after viewing a "Deleted Scenes" supplement on the 2004 disc.

I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about, but I'm sure the original forum post was just simply edited to acknowledge the new release.

How does someone posting in 2004 know about a 2010 restoration? I agree that the post was edited (probably entirely re-written). For example, the new supplements do not include the "deleted scenes" and the director's statements about why they were deleted.

But the 2004 and 2010 releases are different films. And why do they have the same spine number? What's a collector to do? Which is the real spine # 234?

In the 2004 release, in the supplements, there is a "Deleted Scenes" section, where the director states that he cut "10, 15, maybe 20 minutes" for rhythm and storytelling reasons. He says he made the cuts. He says he considers the shortened version the director's cut.

Bring that up with Volker Schlöndorff.

Shouldn't Criterion address the inconsistency by asking him about it? Did the director forget what he said for the 2004 release?

By the way, I haven't read of Criterion claiming the new release is a director's cut. They write something like, "a complete cut, approved by the director."

Add: But I do see that Facebook post you linked (is that an official Criterion post?) stating, "Volker Schlöndorff, in town to present the digital director's cut of THE TIN DRUM, stopped by the office and discussed the intent of the new version: ..." Is there a difference between a "director's cut" and a "digital director's cut?"

Yes, he states in that video that the new cut is not the one that won awards, etc. In the 2004 supplements, he mentions that some of the deleted material was not faithful to the novel. I am speculating that the new cut simply adds the material deleted in 2004. I think the existence of that video indicates that Criterion is aware that there is a problem with a new cut.
