If Criterion ever releases another De Palma film, I hope it's either The Fury or Raising Cain. Both have only been released in preaty poor featureless DVDs. And like NoirFan I'd also guess Body Double would be a Twilight Time release due to it being owned by Sony.

Quick question for people that have ordered online. There are two versions of Chungking Express listed in the sale- the one with the correct artwork and another with a non-Criterion image but discounted 50% in the sale.

I presume the other version isn't the Criterion release? As the Blu-ray with that image only seems to be available from private sellers.

This is the Criterion DVD, which is available (for now) at 50% off:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dvd-...n=715515033220

This is the Criterion Blu-ray, which is available through the B&N marketplace only (Amazon has copies as well, still reasonable for the time being):
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dvd-...n=715515033329

All others that come up in the B&N search are non-Criterion (Miramax).

Incedentally, I watched this for the first time (blind buy) last night. I really liked it, though the ending left me feeling a bit unresolved. Kind of had a "Robert Altman in Asia" feel to it.

Didn’t realized Chungking Express was out of print. Guess I’ll have to buy it now while it still costs $19.99.

What is the consensus on Chungking Express? Worth a blind buy?

I don't want to pick it up for investment purposes but I don't want another Third Man situation where I want to own it but it's extremely difficult to now.

I really like it. Then again, I’ve liked all three Wong Kar Wai’s films that I’ve seen so far (Chungking, Happy Together and In the Mood for Love). If you like any films from the director Chungking won’t disappoint but if you haven’t I don’t know if a blind buy will be adequate. If you like a film with loose ends and an experimental vibe while having a romantic overtone, then Chungking is for you. Plus the acting, cinematography and music are superb!

Ah well, wanted the Criterion Blu-ray obviously. Thanks

I absolutely loved it. It's a little too quirky to make a blanket 'oh, anybody will love this, go buy' it blind buy recommendation but yeah, go buy it.

Chungking Express is worth the blind buy - contagiously optimistic about love and life on every level.

I picked up a copy from Amazon; they're about $23 right now. They're only going to go up in price.

Watched a couple more. I'm on a roll.

Black Orpheus - a nostalgic and romantic look at Rio during Carnaval. I love how it reminded me of my own experience of Carnaval -- but add a bit of City of God and it would have been more accurate (hahaha!). Movie itself holds little repeat viewings for me.

Le Harve - Charming film about a senior shoeshine boy who incidentally stumbles upon a young illegal immigrant. Well meaning but also holds little repeat viewings for me.

Here's an update. Mine shipped today. Funny thing was I got the shipping notice about an hour after I sent an e-mail to Barnes and Noble asking where my order was.

I didn't realize that CHUNGKING EXPRESS was out of print either. Probably my favorite Wong Kar-wai film. You may never eat pineapples from a can again! Christopher Doyle's cinematography is beautiful and lush: the first half is shot entirely at night and the second is drenched in an aura of golden nostalgia. The soundtrack is perfect too.

And is Tony Leung the best damn actor in the world?

Again, highly recommended.

Well, today received two packages from B&N...same items that arrived yesterday. Thanks B&N for saying you had no record of orders placed and to re-order, because apparently they did have record and sent the same items three times. You'd think they'd look into things like this before shipping them out.

My faith in Criterion as a purveyor of quality product will be greatly diminished if they just stick that on their release. They can't use the "we didn't do the restoration so it's not our fault" excuse again and again. Either figure it out, pay for your own people to do a new version, or don't bother.
Yikes!
I'm not sure how to describe that.
Oh well, I guess I'll hanging on to my Criterion DVD...
