Thinking about blind buying the Eclipse Series 37: When Horror Came to Shochiku . Watched the bits on Criterion.com and I'm insanely intrigued. Does anyone recommend the set?

Also, we don't add stuff we do t really need because its on sale, or because we need to have a giant collection if stuff the majority won't look at. We also embrace digital downloads (at least this Librarian does, as again, tool a course on Digital Libraries).
I wonder if there are any that buy all books that come with a dust jacket.

Or people that buy every book a particular publisher puts out, regardless of what it is.

I'm getting very close to that point with Black Lizard's Vintage Crime series.

I'm not going too far out of my way yet but I'm going to be looking for more of their stuff at gohastings and if I ever see one of their titles in a thrift store it will be an autobuy.

Which brings me to the real reason I'm posting: while I have not yet seen Heaven's Gate, I've heard a lot of negative reviews for the film, but then saw a 5 star rating here when the BD was reviewed.

What is everyone's take on the film of those who have either seen the 149 minute or 216 minute versions?

Thanks!
A few of us discussed the film, personal opinions, and critical responses past and present about a week or two ago. Around about the date the review was posted...

It didn't occur to me until after i posted, but i guess I did have a bit of a problem with Donald M. Grant in the mid 90's. I bought most of what they put out because the editions were so gorgeous!

This is a random question, but do any of you guys know about the rights to Bergman's Hour of the Wolf and if it will ever come to blu-ray? Persona as well. Would MGM or who ever owns them put the money into it?

And for that matter, Shame and The Passion of Anna?

MGM do have the rights but Criterion could licence them from them.

It would be great if criterion released them, but I just want them on blu regardless. Would be a shame if no one is working on it.

The Criterion/MGM deal from '9/'10 would have to have been changed to license those Bergman films as the director was not part of the deal. I hope it has as Persona is one of my most wanted blu-rays.

Had another B&N order come on. I'll be giving away Paths of Glory and Gojirra to my dad for Christmas.

Also got one for myself, and I watched it last night for the first time: Something Wild. I enjoyed it pretty well; the story was fun, the characters were good, and the acting was great.

I picked up Heaven's Gate yesterday at Barnes & Noble, kind of surprised there isnt much for video extras on the set. The Final Cut people speak of is that just a book or was there also an actual documantary on it?

Also as much I like the cover of the release I kind of hate that the fonts and sizing are the same for Michael's name and the films title. It just looks kind of blah. I realize they were wanting to let people know that this is his film that he worked so hard on etc... but the font and layout could have been better. It could be that I loved the old original font of the films title.

Also anyone catch the synopsis on the back cover where they referred to Kris's "weathered sensuality" that was awesome!

My packaging for Heaven's Gate is weird.

It closes fine and there's no damage, but it seems like it's too full.

I do have a friend who did that with Harry Potter, buy the hardcovers and paperbacks, plus the adult and children's covers. Her excuse was that she had several different houses to go to though.

I admit that sometimes I prefer to have all the same covers in a book series, or all hardcovers, but I'm not super fussy about it. I'm definitely fussier about book covers than film covers. You're not really looking at the film cases that often, but you and others have to look at more often.

The February preorders are up on Amazon.ca for cheap, although the dates are all for January. On the Waterfront is missing from them however.

The book Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven's Gate, the Film That Sank United Artists is by Steven Bach, UA executive at the time of the making of Heaven's Gate.

The film Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate is a documentary on the same subject. It can be viewed in eight parts on YouTube, just search for "final cut heaven's gate".

It's such a shame that people only support the label half-heartedly.
Anyway, I stopped at a B&N and got "Rashomon," "Rosemary's Baby" and "Weekend" at half-price.
