Sadly, this is true.
As much as I love Soderbergh's Solaris, it was a bit of a flop.
According to boxofficemojo, it cost $47 mil to make, but made back only $30 mil worldwide.
Oh well. It'll turn up on blu-ray eventually.
The DVD has a pretty good commentary with Soderbergh and James Cameron (who was a producer on the film).

I didn't say there was.
Just making sure that they're noted as one of most talked about topics on this thread (by you ).
I don't care what people talk about really; if I'm not interested I just scroll on by to the next post.

I really liked it Better than Harakiri imo although not the others. And unfortunately there's bugger all special features

It's a good fun samurai film.
As someone noted, it's no Kurosawa, but it is still worthwhile. Get it when it is cheap, as there aren't any real extras.

I disagree with you on The New World - I think it contains 172 minutes of absolutely beautiful sequences. The blu-ray from New Line Cinema is perfectly fine, but it would've been nice to see the three cuts made available: festival cut, theatrical cut, and so-called director's cut.
You're right about the Fox blu-ray of The Tree of Life - I use the "creation" sequence to demo my surround sound to friends

It sure would be nice to see this one in 2013. I have my doubts however. Something tells me we could be waiting for this one for a while. Hopefully I'm wrong. One of my favorites though.

It's my favorite also. However Chungking is right behind and I'm hoping The Grandmasters surpasses them all.

Nice avatar man. Seijun's go to guy, Joe Shishido. It's funny, Seijun's films are polar oppisites of Kurosawa's however with Branded and Tokyo Drifter, I have nearly just as much respect for this fine dierector.

What?! How did I not snag your avatar earlier. An astounding image from a great film.

How's the Suzuki in the Nikkatsu set?

I know, I know. The New World is one of the most beautiful films ever created in my honest opinion. Just that I love the first 42 minutes before the story takes a dramatic turn after Captain John Smith is returned to the Jamestown fort. Sometimes I wish the film could just be about Smith and Pocahontos, but then it needed the juxtaposition between one harmonious indigenous culture (Native Americans) and a destructive consuming culture (Western society) for the story to make the greatest impact. A most wondrous film I must say and the very end is glorious too when Pocahontos is seen running amidst nature whilst Wagner's Das Rheingold is playing in the background. A phenomenal and emotional impact!

They're price matching Best Buy and I've read that the BB sale ends 12/1 but grain of salt and whatnot.

I think I understand what you mean...yeah, you most definitely (well, probably) want to watch it alone the first time. I'd strongly advise that

Me too. It was the first film of his I'd watched, and I remember looking through and reading about his other work right after and being surprised at just how different it all seemed. I myself like Lars Von Trier though I wouldn't compare them too far, considering how far less realistic his work is.

I'm rarely baffled when it comes to viewing films, but Godard's Weekend really has me somewhat speechless. Like, what did I just watch? I understand it's a critique on society, but man, what an interesting way to show it.

Well thank you.

I'm actually the same way as you, and I seriously try not to bring up those guys all that often. I often fail at that though.

Brazil was my first Criterion. I bought the single disc used for 10 bucks at Rogers Video on Adelaide in London, Ontario when I was a dirt poor student, and was so happy I could get a Criterion cheap. I'm also a Gilliam fan, and atm, Tideland is still the only film of his I haven't watched.

I am still not forgiven over Dr. Parnassus, as no one who went with me to see it in theatres enjoyed it, including myself. Well, I thought it was pretty to look at, and the story could have been compelling, but unfortunately, you could tell Ledger was having issues, as Colin Farell managed to out act him. It's starting to improve somewhat, and I did go buy the DVD once it hit the cheapo bin as I'm a bit of a completist for some directors.

I feel like an ignoramus because I don't enjoy Malick. His films are very beautiful to look at, but I always seem to have a meh reaction to them. I'm sorry.

You know, Tree of Life still has yet to grow on me. I remember after walking out of the theater after seeing it I was very disappointed. It was "too big" and too ambitious and for me it ended up being ponderous, lugubrious, laborious and exhausting. I felt the same way recently with Cloud Atlas, which I was really looking forward to, but in the end, it didn't connect.

And though its highly unlikely, but if Criterion ever picks up and distributes Cloud Atlas, I will seriously stop buying their releases. I was actually offended by the sheer audacity of that movie. Pretentious is an understatement. Anyway, thumbs down to films like Tree of Life and Cloud Atlas that go way too far.

I remember writing a 12 page essay on that film in my Senior Film Seminar class in my final year at university. Now that I bought it during the 50% off sale, I can't wait to watch this film again after not seeing it for over 10 years.
