I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic films and accept every title on general principle (and it doesn't matter if its The Postman or Waterworld or some other overblown post-apocalyptic epic like 2012). But other than Lars Von Trier's recent string of overly depressing post-apocalyptic films and now this old, experimental Malle film Black Moon, I would have normally kept the film in my collection. We shall see.

No, no, I only have 101 Criterion films in my collection so nowhere near the 600+ titles (on DVD and BD). I'm a selective, non-impulsive/compulsive consumer! I have mastered the troll and turned him/her into a hobbit!

Now if only they had BD's to rent! But hey, at least if you watch the DVD first, you can get a better idea if you're gonna invest $ into the BD edition.

I definitely use my closest librar(ies) as resources for films and TV, Criterion or not...though as you mention, yes DVD only. As Joe Dalek mentions above Netflix and Hulu+ are godsends for checking out pictures, too.

These libraries are also great for film books!

I haven't seen Following, but I'd have to agree that there's no way it's worse than The Dark Knight Rises. What a clunky, bloated, overindulgent mess of a film. And you're right, the editing is downright atrocious.

In that case get it. Its strange in a dry, matter of fact way and has some pretty startling images of military control. Do you own Weekend? It has a very apocalyptic feel?

Might I suggest having a Flash Gordon/TDKR double bill. You'll be in a better mood to laugh at the heavy handedness and enjoy the inept/rushed filmmaking of TDKR (Although shots beforehand does the job in less time).

Ah, you must be a scholarship student at AWSA. Or do the bills just go directly to your people?

Either way, that's gotta be sweet.

I'm not a fan of Japanese New Wave, or Naked, and to me, the Soderberg/Gray films are not cinematic enough to really benefit from blu-ray, although they are interesting and entertaining films. So you might not want to listen to me, lol.

I'm sorry but The Master is mind numbingly bad. PTA has directed some of my favorite films. I was dying to love this movie. I saw it with a packed crowd and I could tell the theater had the same feeling I had....please let this uncomfortableness be over finally.

What are the chances of a Criterion release of Leon? Although it's already available on Blu-Ray.

Were having shrimp cocktails with Bret Ratner (in the middle of a shot by shot by shot analysis of Xanadu). McG's up next, I wonder what he's gonna say.

Unrelated but speaking of auteurs many love to hate: Mubi.com has some pretty good essays on the late great Tony Scott.

I know it's fun to immediately dismiss anything that's popular or entertaining, but you have to at least commend Nolan for trying (and often succeeding) in elevating the super-hero film, and by association the blockbuster, to something more artful and intelligent than most of the 3D dreck that fills movie theatres these days. Even if he sometimes misses the mark, at least you can tell he puts a lot of careful thought into everything that goes on screen.

Think of him as a "gateway drug" to art house cinema. I know at least two people (anecdotal evidence, I know) who've watched and enjoyed Battle of Algiers based on the fact that Nolan mentioned it as an inspiration for TDKR in interviews.

Default Hard Eight

I would like to request that Criterion releases P.T. Anderson's first film on BD, Hard Eight. Who else loves Hard Eight?[/QUOTE]

Hard Eight is great. It seems to be a perfect fit for Criterion. Anyone who hasn't seen this film and has any interest in the Casino lifestyle then this if a must see. I love the fact that There's a line in the film where they talk about some of Sydney's old aquaintinces. They mention names that I can't think of off the top of my head, (my bad) but however these same names (charachters) show up in some of his later films such as Boogie Nights and Magnolia. Pure Genius.

Default Leon and Hard Eight

Leon would be great but I don't believe Criterion could do much more with it considering the bluray has enough extras as is. Sure the transfer can be improved. Hard Eight would be great but I remember a DVD having a nice collection of special features. Two great films that I would love to have a Criterion of but I doubt it will happen.
